Joshua Closes In On IBF Title Offer

0

Anthony Joshua is on the verge of receiving an offer to fight Filip Hrgovic as the next contender in line for a crack at the interim IBF title.

AJ is close to landing the secondary heavyweight title shot and may be able to compete for the strap he won in 2016 as quickly as this summer.

The former two-time world champion is the next in line after Ruiz and Wilder in the IBF ranking. Therefore, he’s in for a shock opportunity at the vacant interim red strap against Hrgovic.

This is due to Andy Ruiz Jr. pulling out of purse bids on Thursday.

Anthony Joshua vs Filip Hrgovic

Joshua could also earn a shot at the full title against Hrgovic. However, he is ironically relying on Tyson Fury to get this unexpected chance at becoming a three-time heavyweight titleholder.

The Londoner needs Fury to beat Oleksandr Usyk in the spring. If he does and relinquishes as promised, the IBF would move to sanction a clash with Hrgovic for the ultimate crown.

Fury has vowed to relinquish the IBF belt if he ever wins it again. The Gypsy King stated he doesn’t want to hold it again, even for one day.

Gambia beat Zambia 2-0 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt on Friday.

The Young Scorpions scored twice in the second half at the Haras El Hodoud Stadium to secure their second victory of Group C.

Cape Town City forward Kajally Drammeh fired the Young Scorpions in front midway through the second half before captain Alagie Saine wrapped up the result with a late penalty.

The West Africans dominated the match and created numerous chances in the first half to put the match beyond the Young Copper Bullets.

Abdoulie Bojang kept faith with the same team that started against Tunisia in their first match of the group. Slavia Prague winger Ebrima Singhateh had most of the chances for Gambia but the youngster couldn’t convert.

The former Real de Banjul protege was presented with the first opportunity of the match inside three minutes when he collected a loose ball outside the Zambian box only for his effort to be blocked for a corner.

The lively Singhateh came close twice but his efforts lacked purpose to beat the Zambian keeper Jeban Tembo.

The Young Copper Bullets started the second half better with Derrick Bulaya forcing a save from Pa Ebou Dampha in the Scorpions goal.

The Gambia made a double change bringing in Modou Marong and Muhamed Sawaneh for Ebrima Singhateh and Real de Banjul’s Alieu Gibba.

The duo helped the Young Scorpions going forward with Marong partnering Adama Bojang in attack while Muhamed Sawaneh slotted in the three man midfield.

Gambia scored the opener after 63 minutes through Cape Town City star Kajally Drammeh’s close range tap in.

Modou Marong headed forward a long ball from goalkeeper Pa Ebou Dampha behind the Zambia defense which allowed Adama Bojang to race through and the Steve Biko forward had a touch to set Drammeh for the breakthrough goal.

Gambia continued to enjoy possession and got their second goal from the penalty when Marong was brought down by Tembo.

Captain and Man of the Match for the second time Alagie Saine slotted home the spot kick sending Tembo the wrong way and firing the two-time bronze medalists to the quarter-finals with a game to spare.

The result means Gambia have an unassailable lead in Group C. They will play Benin in their last group match while Zambia face Tunisia.

2023: Katsina State Takes Proactive Security Measures

0

Katsina State government, North-West Nigeria says residents have no reason to be apprehensive about coming out to vote in Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Special Adviser to the State Governor on Security Matters, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmed, who made the declaration in Katsina, told Voice of Nigeria that adequate measures have been taken ahead of the polls, to ensure a smooth exercise.

Ahmed explained that the State has adopted a system called Community Networking, which has helped in gathering intelligence, through a monitoring mechanism, thus aiding security agencies to nip any problem in the bud.

Sometimes the way issues are being reported, goes beyond the ordinary. But in terms of being proactive, we have taken adequate measures in liaison with relevant security agencies.

“In fact we have gone beyond that. We are doing what is called community networking, bearing in mind that the security agencies do not go everywhere. We have this community arrangement through the traditional institutions in which the State government has domesticated security with a step down measure through a three tier security structure that will start from the village to the ward and district levels.

“Through that, we have information collection and monitoring mechanisms that help the security agencies to be more proactive rather than reactive. So, as far as we are concerned, we will not rest on our oars until we ensure that the elections come and go peacefully,” he said.

Currency Redesign
The Special Adviser on Security further told Voice of Nigeria that the currency redesign policy has helped address security challenges in the State and citizens of the State are gradually adjusting to reality.

He said: “One good thing about this policy is the apprehension created by people is more of a myth than reality and as far as we are concerned in Katsina, people are now adjusting to reality.

“Since it is something that is accepted globally, I think when you condition yourself to adapt to reality, I don’t think it will be an impediment. So far so good in Katsina, people are getting accustomed to it and as the situation improves, I’m sure the Central Bank will address the shortfalls and gaps and that will help us to stabilize.

“The rate of kidnapping for ransom has dropped, to the glory of God, crime and criminality has dropped. As for political thugs, you don’t have cash to give them likewise, drug addicts, no cash to give them. So, the politicians that used to take advantage of political thugs to go and disrupt the process can no longer do so. Therefore, the cashless policy will stabilize the polity.”

2023 Elections: Agency Highlights Risks, Opportunities As Nigerians Vote

0

The success of Nigeria’s 2023 Elections can break new ground in transparency and credibility  in Africa if the Government delivers on its commitment to secure the electoral process.

This is the summation of an election security risk assessment conducted by the Office for Strategic Preparedness and Resilience, OSPRE,  which is also known as the National Early Warning Centre of Nigeria.

The Head, Communications and  Public Relations of the oraganisation, Nike Babalola made this known in a statement.

According to the Director General of OSPRE, Mr. Chris Ngwodo, the report released last week entitled “Ballots and Battlegrounds: 2023 Election Security Risks as Nigeria Decides” is an assessment of threats to the credible conduct of this weekend’s polls based on crime reporting, incident mapping, historical research, publicly available information, open-source intelligence and ancillary data.

Ngwodo also noted that the report “is the product of a unique collaboration between state actors and civil society organizations who are united by the aim of improving the security and integrity of our electoral process and our democratic institutions.

Use of BVAS

The report highlights the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC as a development that could have a transformative impact on election management.

The deployment of digital tools significantly narrows the spectrum of options available to bad actors who seek to subvert the electoral process,” part of the report read.

Ngwodo said such actors may resort to voter suppression through campaigns of intimidation and overt violence aimed at reducing voter turnout; attacks on INEC officials and attempts to steal, clone or destroy BVAS devices; vote buying; subornment of INEC staff and security agents with the aim of perverting electoral outcomes and attempts to hack the online transmission of results.

He said despite the likely use of these tactics by criminal elements, a high turnout of voters under conditions of adequate security as well as cybersecurity measures would guarantee the integrity of the process.

The report described the recent spate of attacks on INEC facilities and personnel as “unprecedented” and called on the Government to treat such attacks as “acts of subversion under the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act of 2022.” It also recommended that “the expeditious investigation and prosecution of electoral crimes should be a top priority for law enforcement and security agencies.”

Ending Political Violence

The report concludes that ending the culture of political violence demands the promotion of strong disincentives the reduction of the premium placed on public office by modulating the rewards and privileges associated with power and stridently punishing electoral crimes.

The National Centre for the Coordination of Early Warning and Response Mechanism was established in June 2022 with the signing of Executive Order 12 by President Muhammadu Buhari, pursuant to Article 58 of the Treaty of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, and Article 16 of the 1999 Protocol on the Mechanism relating to Conflict Prevention, Management, Resolution, Peacekeeping and Security.

The centre is mandated to address threats to human security and to build the preparedness and resilience of institutions and communities.
