Borno State fire: Minister sympathizes with Monday Market Traders

0

By Rahila Lassa

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq has expressed sadness over the fire incident which gutted the Monday Market in Maiduguri, Borno state on Sunday.

The raging inferno which was said to have started at about 2 am spread to different parts of the market, destroying many shops and property worth billions of Naira.

Umar Farouq described the incident as unfortunate and a great loss to the nation’s economy.

“We received the sad news early this morning of the fire disaster which engulfed the biggest market in Maiduguri. We understand that goods and shops worth billions of naira have been destroyed by the raging fire.

“This is a great loss to the country’s economy, especially Borno state which is just beginning to recover from the destruction and losses as a result of insurgency and banditry. We sympathize with the state government and people of Borno state, especially the traders whose livelihoods have gone up in flames following the fire incident.

“I have directed the National Emergency Management Agency NEMA to help with Search and Rescue operations of property to see what can be salvaged and to ascertain the level of damage and loss at the Monday Market”.

The 35-year-old Monday Market is the largest trading hub in the North East. Hundreds of shops and warehouses were said to be affected by the inferno.

BVAS: Journalists Praise Nigeria’s Electoral Body

0

As Nigerians await the result of Saturday’s presidential election, some Journalists that covered the election in Daura, Katsina State, where President Buhari participated in the voting exercise say the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has started getting it right.

One of the Journalists told VON Correspondent, Timothy Choji that the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) has indeed made voting seamless.

“I think for long we have not seen a decent arrangement like this one. Before now, we were all witnesses to the snatching of ballots, the problem of vote buying and all other problems hitherto associated with the registration of voters, voting and so on.

“But this new technology in particular is so impressive because we’ve not seen any hitch. Voting was orderly, security personnel have not done anything that will annoy or provoke the voters so it is a very good development.

I will say INEC has started getting it right because of you look at the process from the display of the voters register to the accreditation and voting proper, it is so appreciable so I think INEC has started getting it right,” he said.

The second respondent said he took his time to monitor proceedings from across the country and he sums up his impression this way:

“As Journalists, we may not be concerned with only the area we cover because we are always going to be concerned about what is happening around the country. But from the area where I covered, which is the polling unit where the President of Nigeria came to vote, it was order and I probably wouldn’t have expected anything less.

“But generally I have been getting series of reports from other colleagues who are spread across Nigeria and so far from those reports, I will say it has been 60 per cent hitch-free.

“People have actually come out in numbers to vote. I can see that INEC has started getting it right. You could see the speed at which the process actually went on. I think on a large scale, the BVAS has come to stay. It is an amazing technology that is working for us now.”

Both Journalists praised Nigerians for heeding to enlightenment messages dished out by INEC during the voter registration exercise and before the election.

They called on Nigerians to accept the outcome of the election in order to give rom for democracy to continue to thrive in the country.

Migrant shipwreck in southern Italy kills 58, including children

0

About Fifty-eight people died, including some children, when a wooden sailing boat carrying migrants crashed against rocks on the southern Italian coast early on Sunday, authorities said.

The vessel had set sail from Turkey several days ago with migrants from Afghanistan, Iran and several other countries, and crashed in stormy weather near Steccato di Cutro, a seaside resort on the eastern coast of Calabria.

The provisional death toll stood at 58, Manuela Curra, a provincial government official, told Reuters. Eighty-one people survived, with 20 hospitalised including one person in intensive care, she said.

One survivor was arrested on migrant trafficking charges, the Guardia di Finanza customs police said.

Cutro’s mayor, Antonio Ceraso, said women and children were among the dead. Exact numbers for how many children had died were not yet available.

His voice cracking up, Ceraso told the SkyTG24 news channel that he had seen “a spectacle that you would never want to see in your life … a gruesome sight … that stays with you for all your life”.

Wreckage from the wooden gulet, a Turkish sailing boat, was strewn across a large stretch of coast.

Curra said the vessel left Izmir in western Turkey three or four days ago, adding that survivors had said some 140 to 150 were on board.

The survivors were mostly from Afghanistan, as well as a few from Pakistan and a couple from Somalia, she said, adding that identifying the nationalities of the dead was harder.

“Many of these migrants came from Afghanistan and Iran, fleeing conditions of great hardship”, Italian President Sergio Mattarella said.

Initial reports from ANSA and other Italian news agencies, spoke of 27 bodies washed up on the beach and more found in the water.

Ignazio Mangione, an Italian Red Cross official, told SkyTG24 that very few of the children believed to have been on the boat survived.

‘ILLUSORY MIRAGE’

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed “deep sorrow” for the deaths. Blaming human traffickers, she vowed to block migrant sea departures to prevent such disasters.

Her right-wing administration has taken a hard line on migration since taking office in October, mostly by restricting the activities of migrant rescue charities with tough new laws that won final parliamentary approval on Thursday.

Meloni accuses charities of encouraging migrants to make the dangerous sea journey to Italy, acting as so-called “pull factors”.

Charities reject this, saying migrants set off regardless of whether rescue boats are in the vicinity.

“Stopping, blocking and hindering the work of NGOs (non-governmental organisations) will have only one effect: the death of vulnerable people left without help,” Spanish migrant rescue charity Open Arms tweeted in reaction to Sunday’s shipwreck.

In a separate statement, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said it was essential to stop sea crossings that he said offer migrants the “illusory mirage of a better life” in Europe, enrich traffickers, and cause such tragedies.

Pope Francis, the son of Italian immigrants to Argentina and long a vocal advocate for migrants’ rights, said he was praying for everyone caught up in the shipwreck.

Italy is one of the main landing points for migrants trying to enter Europe by sea, with many seeking to travel on to richer northern European nations. The so-called central Mediterranean route is known as one of the world’s most dangerous.

The United Nations Missing Migrants Project has registered more than 17,000 deaths and disappearances in the central Mediterranean since 2014. More than 220 have died or disappeared this year, it estimates.

Renewable energy: UNECA projects $200bn growth for Africa’s economy

0

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) has projected a growth of 200 billion dollars for Africa’s economy by 2030 through the use of renewable energy.

The Acting Executive Secretary of UNECA, Mr Antonio Pedro, said this at the Fifth African Science, Technology and Innovation Forum in Niamey, Niger Republic on Sunday.

The theme of the forum is: “Accelerating Development and Diffusion of Emerging Technologies for a Green, Inclusive and Resilient Africa’’.

“One key opportunity for us lies in the renewable energy market. The value in this market in 2020 was estimated at 881.7 billion dollars and is projected to reach 1,977.6 billion dollars by 2030.

“A 10 per cent share can easily add 200 billion dollars to Africa’s economy,’’ Pedro said.

Global Digital Economy

Pedro said another opportunity Africa should not miss out on is the global digital economy.

He said the global digital economy was estimated at about 14.5 trillion dollars, with about 60 per cent of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) now depending on digital technologies.

“Initiatives such as the African Trade Exchange (ATEX), which have been conceptualised by ECA and now fully operational under Afreximbank, can connect African entrepreneurs to the global marketplace more effectively.

“It can also link them to sources of finance, and accelerate implementation of the AfCFTA.’’he said.

The acting executive secretary also said Africa should invest in research and development to deliver sustainable industrialisation and economic diversification.

He said currently, most African countries have less than 100 researchers per million inhabitants and 0.5 per cent of GDP allocated to research and development.

“As expressed in our theme, we are looking to harness technology for a green, inclusive and resilient Africa.

“There are already many examples of transformative uses of technologies for this purpose across our continent.’’

He gave examples of sustainable development through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) several African countries were involved in to develop their economies.

“In support of SDG 6 — Ensuring access to water and sanitation for all in rural part of Arusha, Tanzania, a nanotechnology-based, low-cost water purification system is serving thousands of lives and creating hundreds of jobs for people.

“To facilitate access to affordable and clean energy, SDG 7, SOLEKTRA International has installed 100,000 solar street lamps and 1,200 solar micro-grids in 15 various countries bringing electricity to many for the first time.

“Various car-hailing services have cut down waiting time, enhanced transparency, and reduced cost of travel across African cities.

“Similarly in 2022, 11,200 bags of ground coffee were sold in a mere one second on the Alibaba E-Commerce platform, to name just a few examples.

“These are just some examples of real solutions that can accelerate the achievement of the SDGs.’’

Pedro, however, said Africa needed to strengthen the enabling environment through informed policies, increase investment in the research and development process, and harness the support of the private sector more effectively.

He said Africa should be at the forefront of a green transformation to accelerate growth, diversify economies and deliver on the SDGs and Agenda 2063.

Pedro further said UNECA was committed to supporting the transformation of Africa in its development process.

Ekiti Governor, others laud INEC on BVAS

0

The Ekiti state governor, Abiodun Oyebanji and  Stakeholders  have commended the deployment of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) technology in the conduct of Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.

They described the BVAS as a game changer, which practically eliminated any form of malpractices during the exercise.

The Bimodal Voter Accreditation System is an electronic device designed to read Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, and authenticate voters, using their fingerprints, in order to prove that they are eligible to vote at a particular polling unit.

The technology was deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, during the governorship election in Ekiti last year.

Aside verifying the genuineness of the PVCs and the fingerprint or facial authentication of voters during accreditation, the BVAS replaced the Z-pad for uploading polling unit results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) in real-time on election day.

The State Governor, Abiodun Oyebanji, shortly after casting his ballot at his Ikogosi hometown, said the INEC had improved its processes with the introduction of the BVAS technology.

“We must commend the Federal government and we must also commend the INEC for improving on their processes. We cannot run away from technology. It’s going to make the process more transparent, the turnaround time faster and it’s going to make the election more credible. It’s a work in progress and I am sure that INEC is on top of the game,” he said.

Similarly, the Federal Commissioner for Salaries, Wages and Incomes, Dr Mojisola Yahya-Kolade, in an interview with Voice of Nigeria, noted that the introduction of bvas technology has strengthened the voting process.

Federal Commissioner for Salaries, Wages and Incomes, Dr Mojisola Yahya-Kolade

“The BVAS is excellent. If you are not captured, you are not captured! If your PVS for whatever reason does not show, they would not allow you to vote. And we the leaders of the party we are enforcing that and encouraging them. I went around and said if you are not checked, don’t vote, because we don’t want any problem.

“We don’t want any stories. There is no need, if your face is not captured; if your PVC is not captured then you are not voting. So, I think this is one of the best things we have and I hope this is the beginning greater things to happen to this country we all love so much.”

A Federal House of Representatives candidate for Ekiti Federal Constituency 1, Bimbo Daramola, though commended the INEC for the improvement brought about by the use of BVAS, said more trainings should be done for the personnel that will operate the machine.

According to him, some of the corps members, who served as polling officers in his area could still not handle the machines effectively.

I think INEC has modestly done a bit well, just that in subsequent elections we expect the training to be done should not be rushed through. You see that INEC rushed through the training for the officers because the way the guys handled the BVAS machine you see a little bit of fumbling there.

“So, I think that INEC should give these officers the training that will endure so that they can get to do the job easily, not that you train them two days ago and put them on the job today,” he noted.

The election in Ekiti State on Saturday was generally peaceful. Voice of Nigeria correspondent, covering the election, observed relatively good turnout of voters, who conducted themselves in orderly manner at various polling units.

French President to visit four central Africa nations

0

French President Emmanuel Macron will next week undertake a four-nation tour of central African countries, as Paris seeks to counter growing Chinese and Russian influence in the region.

Macron is to visit Gabon for an environmental summit, followed by Angola, then the Republic of Congo, and finally the Democratic Republic of Congo.

His visits come as alarm grows in Paris over the growing role of Russia in French-speaking African countries, alongside a Chinese push for influence that has been apparent for some years.

France and its Western allies accuse the Russian Wagner mercenary group of being active in Mali, forcing France to pull out troops on anti-jihadist missions, and the Central African Republic.

Paris has also accused Russia of spreading disinformation to undermine French interests in its former colonies.

Macron will arrive in Gabon on 1st March to attend the One Forest Summit seeking to preserve forests along the vast Congo river basin, according to a French presidential official, asking not to be named.

He will then head to Angola as part of a drive to enhance French ties with Lusophony parts of Africa.

After the Republic of Congo, he will wind up his trip in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo on March 3-4.

Macron has insisted Africa is a priority of his second mandate at the helm of France and in July last year undertook a trip to Cameroon, Benin and Guinea-Bissau.

To the frustration of the West, a number of powers in Africa, seeking to keep a neutral stance and preserve their interests, refused to take a position on the Russian offensive like other nations including India and China.

U20 AFCON: Nigeria beats Mozambique to reach quarter-finals

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria beat Mozambique 2-0 in Ismailia to qualify for the quarter-finals of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday night.

The Flying Eagles’ head coach, Isah Ladan Bosso charges scored two sumptuous goals in the first-half through Samson Lawal and Ibrahim Muhammad to secure second place in Group A.

The record seven time champions of the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations moved six points while Senegal top the group with nine points following their 4-0 thumping of host nation Egypt in Cairo.

The Nigerians dominated possession at Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia and it came as no surprise when they sealed the comfortable victory at full-time.

Muhammad tested the Mozambican goalkeeper with a speculative shot from distance after five minutes to demonstrate the intentions of the Flying Eagles.

The 20 years old goalkeeper from Mozambique, Kimiss Zavala was well positioned to gather the effort as the Young Os Mambas weathered the early Flying Eagles’ pressure.

They continued to pile pressure on Mozambique with Haliru Sarki and Muhammad providing width to the Nigerian attack.

The Nigerians created half-chances through Sarki whose half-volley came off a Mozambican defender after 20 minutes.

Zavala also pulled a smart one-handed save to deny Ayuba Abubakarr from giving the Flying Eagles the lead. Also, the lively Muhammad played in Abubakarr who controlled the ball with his back to goal before firing straight at Zavala who made himself big.

Nigeria broke the deadlock through Lawal after 32 minutes with a stupendous strike from distance to beat the helpless Zavala.

The forward latched on to a quick interchange of passes between full-back Augustine Njoku and Sarki before beating Zavala with a powerful strike.

The Flying Eagles doubled their lead four minutes before half-time through Muhammad’s sumptuous strike from outside the area. Muhammad Aminu cut in from the left to release the Cartagena FC striker who had a touch to set himself up before beating Zavala to make it 2-0.

The second half was an even contest with Mozambique playing on the break while Nigeria rang changes to give playing time to other members of the squad.

Substitute Jude Sunday saw his ferocious effort turned over by the busy Zavala 10 minutes into the second half.

Another Nigerian substitute, Olamilekan Adams, forced a save from Zavala as Ladan Bosso’s charges pushed more men forward.

The Young Os Mambas’ only real opportunity came late on through substitute Jose Rabelina Zavala close range effort.

The Flying Eagles join Senegal in the quarter-finals of the competition, while Egypt and Mozambique crash out.

“Regrettably, three of the eleven passengers on board lost their lives. Eight injured officers have been evacuated to Mogadishu for urgent medical attention,” ATMIS said in the statement.

It did not give any details on casualties, including their nationality, but said investigations had begun to determine the cause of the crash.
