2023 Elections: Women Group Deploys Electoral Observers in Anambra State

0

The Executive Director, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom Nigeria (WSRN), Hope Okoye, Friday, said they would deploy 30 women to observe elections across the 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Anambra State.

Okoye, who stated this at a capacity training for media practitioners on gender based reporting and Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law, added that they would open a Situation Room for the purpose of the election.

According to her, WSRN has trained observers that would help to feed in the situation room with electoral contents especially as it concerns women.

We trained observes. We have toll lines. We will open a Situation Room where election contents will come in. 30 election observers will be sent to 21LGAs to monitor the situation and report back through toll lines. Anambra State is among ten States and FCT where WSRN is monitoring election in the State. We will look at it from gender perspective to see how it affects genders,” she noted.

While speaking, the resource person Mrs Ify Unachukwu urged the media to work with WSRN and other civil society organisations (CSOs) to professionally fight for prevention of gender based violence in the country.

Unachukwu stated that it was important to synergize with the media in stopping GBV because they set agenda for the people, aside their cardinal objectives to inform, educate and entertain.

Media can set agenda by creating contents on radio, television or print. They can use different kinds of programmes, editorials, news and others to educate people and discourage gender based violence. The media should reshape the way people think, reason or view things. You should report ethically to avoid using your reports to kill,” she noted.

2023 Elections: APC Groups launch strategy book

0

The Nammbo Support Group and All Progressives Congress, APC Protection Group have launched a book containing the strategies to which the APC Presidential Candidate, Bola Tinubu can win the APC Presidential election in Nigeria.

The book which was launched in Abuja is titled “Structures and Strategies for winning 2023 General Election”

The Author of the book, Professor Dahida Philip said Mr. Tinubu’s plan to create local development authority is what motivated him to support Tinubu.

When Asiwaju was the governor of Lagos State, he created sub-units style of development all the way from the grassroots levels. He created almost 37 local development areas. And if you look at his concept of development, the government is being strengthened from the bottom. And any country that wants to develop their economy, you must locate the natural and mineral resources within every locality, treat based on potential and then harness it. So having that aspect redefined and planning to create a local development authority I believe he has the political will to bring about development from the bottom up. That was one of the first inspirations that made me to start canvassing votes for him.” he explained.

Professor Philip explained that the book is aimed at bridging a gap in APC’s plans to win the 2023 General Election.

In every given election, you must have to develop certain strategies, those strategies must be documented and I discovered that there was a gap in the party’s plans in APC and when I came on board, I decided to draw a road map clearly stated and bringing some of the salient features on how I am going to bring on board some of the strategies on how to win election” he said.

In his good will message at the event, Nigeria’s Minister for Special Duties, George Akume said Mr. Tinubu is someone that builds people to become leaders.

He advised Tinubu supporters to inform voters that Tinubu not only has the capacity to lead Nigeria but that he also had the capability.

INEC Migrates Voters from Populated Polling Units to Prevent Congestion

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained that the migration of some voters from more populated to less populated polling units is to prevent the congestion that usually makes voting cumbersome on election day.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Oyo State, Dr Adeniran Tella, stated this while briefing newsmen on the activities of the Commission in the state, as regards the redistribution of some voters to new polling units.

The REC recalled that the Commission had, in 2021, successfully expanded voter access to polling units from the initial number of 4,783 by converting the then 1,607 voting points into full fledged polling units that now make the total number of 6,390 polling units in the state.

Tella stated: “The Commission, in exercising its powers under Section 40(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022 has allotted voters from overcrowded polling units within the same axis to promote a more pleasant and stress free voting experience on election day. The exercise requires that redistribution of voters to new polling units has been done in proximate locations.

“In other words, the Commission has moved some voters from populated to less populated polling units. This is to make up to the threshold of 750 voters per polling unit, putting into consideration their proximity from one another on election day,” he disclosed.

Tella also pointed out that the name of the polling units with migrated voters had already been pasted in all the affected 28 Local Government Areas of the state, comprising 815 polling units, so as to see and at the same time be well informed ahead of the polls.

He said the exercise, which was done in consultation with all the stakeholders in the electioneering process, would allow for transparency in the electoral process ahead of the forthcoming elections.

The REC noted that eligible voters could also visit the INEC voters’ verification system on www.cvr.inecnigeria.org/vvs or voters.inecnigeria.org to check their names on the register of voters and could, at the same time, confirm the location of their polling units, where they would vote on election day.

Tella used the opportunity of the briefing to reiterate that, the use of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), for voter accreditation and verification on election day, had come to stay.

He further stated that the use of INEC Result Viewing Portal (IRev) to upload polling units’ results using www.inecelectionresults.ng to view the uploaded election results had become part of the new technology of the Commission, urging all eligible voters to come out to vote on election day with their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).

Tella hinted that the Commission would soon come up with an update on the total number of registered voters for the coming elections, including the total number of collected and uncollected PVCs in the state.

He implored the people of the state to cooperate with the Commission to ensure hitch free, credible and inclusive general elections in the state.

Tunisian journalists demonstrate to denounce state repression

0

Dozens of Tunisian journalists and rights activists demonstrated in the streets of the capital, Tunis, to denounce “state repression” and attempts to intimidate the media.

The protest, organised by a journalists’ union, SNJT, came three days after police arrested Noureddine Boutar, the director of a popular private radio station, Mosaïque FM.

Boutar is one of 10 public figures arrested since Saturday, mainly critics of President Kais Saied, including members of the inspired Ennahdha party.

“The authorities, at all levels including the president and the prime minister, are seeking to repress press freedom and there are many indicators that prove this, such as military trials, decree-law no. 54, allegations over editorial outlines and other practises”, denounced Amira Mohamed, vice-president of the SNJT journalists’ union.

Dalila Ben Mbarek Msaddek, lawyer of detained radio director Noureddine Boutar, added “since they cannot arrest journalists, because it will clearly be perceived as a blow against freedom of expression, so they decided to arrest the head of the best and the most listened to media outlet in Tunisia.
By doing so, they are trying to silence all journalists and editors at the radio station who are very critical of the government, as well as other outlets”.

Reacting to protest, President Kais Saied rejected the allegations.

“Today, we hear about freedom of expression. Has a newspaper been banned once? Has a programme been banned? Has a single journalist been prosecuted for his or her journalistic work? Unfortunately, it’s all lies”, said the Tunisian President.

The demonstration came a day after Tunisia’s main opposition coalition said the arrests were “violent and legally baseless”.

On Wednesday the White House said it was “deeply concerned” by the spate of arrests.

Senegalese Opposition leader detains amid presidential elections

0

Senegalese opposition politician Ousmane Sonko was forcibly removed from his vehicle by security forces after his supporters were dispersed by teargas, in a new bout of tension ahead of presidential elections due next year.

The incidents took place after the postponement of a politically-charged trial that may determine Sonko’s eligibility for upcoming presidential elections, whose date was also announced.

In video footage broadcast live on social networks, the politician who came third in the 2019 presidential election and has declared himself a candidate for the 2024 race is seen being forcibly removed from the backseat of his vehicle by uniformed men.

They are seen breaking the window, while Sonko is heard saying he refused to get out.

The men then open the door and pull the politician out by the arm.

After resisting for a few moments, Sonko allowed himself to be taken away.

The police prefecture later confirmed that he was taken home.

The incidents come amid growing tension in the West African country, which has a general reputation for stability in a region where political turbulence is widespread.

Earlier, security forces had used tear gas to disperse about a hundred Sonko supporters who were attempting to enter the court in the capital Dakar.

Sonko, 48, has enjoyed a rapid political rise thanks in part to his popularity with young people.

But he has repeatedly been summoned to court over the past two years.

In this case, Sonko is being sued by Tourism Minister Mame Mbaye Niang for “defamation, insults and forgery.”

As with past hearings, there was a large police presence on the streets of Dakar ahead of Thursday’s proceedings.

A stampede followed Sonko’s entrance to the court, with guards preventing supporters from entering the room, which was already packed with journalists and members of the opposition.

The trial then opened, but the judge ordered a postponement until 16th March.

Sonko had been expected in court on 2nd February but did not appear. His lawyers claimed he had not received a summons.

On Wednesday evening, Sonko announced that he would appear in court Thursday and called on “all Senegalese” to join him there.

In March 2021, Sonko was arrested over rape allegations, triggering violence in which around a dozen people were killed.

A judge has ordered him to face trial in the rape case, though the trial date is not yet known.

Sonko claims the law courts are being used to side-line him a charge denied by the authorities.

In recent years, several other prominent opponents of the president have had their political careers cut short by legal cases.

The next presidential elections have been scheduled for February 25, 2024, authorities also announced on Thursday.

Nigerian Organization calls for improved funding for healthcare

0

A non-profit organization – the Abiodun Essiet Initiative for Girls (AEIG) and other stakeholders have called for improved funding of the health sector in Nigeria. They made the call at the two-years memorial lecture in honour of Brig.-Gen. Dr Victor Essiet, organised by the Abiodun Essiet Initiative for Girls, in Abuja.

Retired Maj.-Gen. Life Ajemba, former Director-General, Ministry of Defence Health Implementation Programme, who spoke on the topic “The State of Healthcare Delivery and Health Care Financing in Nigeria”, decried the low budgetary allocation to the health sector, adding that it was below the World Health Organisation standard and also described the gross underfunding of the health sector as a ‘serious cankerworm’.

“The poor health financing results in weak and obsolete infrastructure in the hospitals, congestion of patients access to health care because of limited human resources… Poor supply of water, wards congestion, irregular supply of electricity, weak telemedicine facility and recruitment, lack of training and retraining, among others.”

“The government should show committment to improve the country’s healthcare system through increasing and prudent health spending.

“It is important for government to adopt a health finance mechanism that can produce equitable access and must be based on compulsory pre-payment, fund pooling or risk sharing and subsidisation for those who cannot afford to pay,” he said.

Also speaking, Mrs Abiodun Essiet, Founder, AEIG and widow of the late Essiet said that even after committing to the Abuja Declaration of 15 per cent budgetary allocation to the health sector, past and present administrations are yet to implement it.

“The situation is worse in the states and local government. This reflects the value government places on health and it has been a challenge in achieving efficient and effective health service delivery in Nigeria.

“This lecture provides an opportunity to reflect on government policies, both past and present, on healthcare financing and proffer solutions to the limitations in the cause of implementation.

“For me as an activist, I have chosen to remember him for what he stood for and one of the ways we want to continue his legacy is bringing decision makers in the forefront of managing the nation’s health sector together.

She further called on the government to come up with policies and strategies that would improve funding in the health sector. She stressed that the latw Abiodun Essiet was taken to several hospitals but didn’t receive adequate treatment due to lack of bed space and proper equipment and facilities like oxygen to manage the situation.

“This is the experience of millions of people in Nigeria on a daily basis and the health condition of the patient usually gets worse or even die in the process of moving from one hospital to another.

Airports strike disrupts flights in Germany

0

Almost 300,000 passengers faced flight delays and cancellations as unionized workers at seven airports in Germany embark on a 24-hour strike to demand better pay.

The full-day walkout, called by the Verdi trade union, prompted Germany’s biggest carrier Lufthansa to cancel more than 1,300 flights at its two busiest hubs, Frankfurt and Munich.

“The strike is expected to have a strong impact, especially on domestic air traffic, ranging from delays to cancellations and even a partial shutdown of air traffic,” Verdi said in a statement.

“The terminals are empty this morning,” said a spokesperson for the airport in Hamburg, adding that very few of the 32,000 passengers affected had turned up.

Around 295,000 passengers are affected by the cancellation of some 2,340 flights at Bremen, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Munich and Stuttgart airports, according to the German ADV airports association.

“Solutions must be found at the negotiating table and not at the expense of passengers,” ADV chief Ralph Beisel said.

“When we look at the airport terminals this morning, it reminds us more of the worst days of the coronavirus and less of a warning strike,” ADV’s Ralph Beisel told broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk.

German trade union Verdi announced the strike on Wednesday after it said collective bargaining efforts for ground service staff, public sector officials and aviation security workers had made little progress.

“If nothing is done about pay now, we will all be in for another chaotic summer,” Verdi Deputy Chair Christine Behle told Inforadio on Friday. “It’s about sending a really strong signal.”

The strike coincides with the 59th Munich Security Conference (MSC). Romania’s foreign minister, who was set to arrive on one of the cancelled flights, will fly to Austria instead and then make the more-than-four-hour drive to Munich, a Romanian embassy official said.

China takes top spot in global refining capacity

The Vice President of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association, Fu Xiangsheng, says China’s oil refining capacity expanded to 920 million tonnes per year, or 18.4 million barrels per day (bpd), making it the world’s largest in 2022.

According to the International Energy Agency’s latest oil market report, that compares with U.S. refining capacity as of December 2022 at 17.6 million bpd, though China’s production of fuel products lagged the United States due to low utilisation rates.

China’s recent wave of refinery expansions has been led by state-run PetroChina and large private firms such as Zhejiang Rongsheng group and Jiangsu Shenghong Petrochemical, mainly to fill a supply gap in petrochemicals rather than transportation fuels.

China’s total refined products output last year was less than 700 million tonnes (5.1 billion barrels), at an average plant utilisation rate of around 70%, the association said, compared with more than 800 million tonnes in the United States, where average utilisation exceeded 90%.

China has 32 refineries with at least 200,000 bpd capacity each, according to the association, citing the launch of a new facility built by PetroChina in Jieyang in Guangdong province as a recent example of the country’s growing capacity.
