2023: Clergy urges government to allow democracy thrive

0

Reverend Father Onuh Ladi, the Provincial Secretary for Health, Justice, Development and Peace (HJDP), Kaduna, has urged government to allow democracy take its course in the upcoming general elections.

He gave the advice in Kaduna while speaking to newsmen on the sideline of a grassroot stakeholders sensitisation workshop to prevent election related violence.

The programme which was organised by Lux Terra Leadership Foundation (LTLF) in collaboration with the HJDP drew participants from across religious, youths and community leaders from the 12 wards of Kaduna North LGA, comprising 48 people each from Muslim and Christian communities.

Ladi noted that the workshop was to reawaken people’s consciousness to avoid violence and vote for their choice without any form of friction on, during and after the elections.

He explained that Kaduna North LGA was chosen because of its volatility and previous history of post electoral violence, which subsequently took religious dimensions.

Kaduna North has people of the two religions living together and having different tribes, we timed this workshop as the elections is just some days ahead so that we can talk and share ideas for peace building.”

Ladi lamented on the current situation of Naira and fuel scarcity, while calling on the people to remain resolute and continue praying to overcome the challenges.

He also frowned at politicians who make inciting utterances, while urging religious, traditional and youth leaders to continue preaching peace for development to have its way in the society.

He also urged the people to avoid being used by politicians to incite violence through religion and other means for their selfish interest.

Alhaji Majeed Dahiru, LTLF Abuja, who represented the Executive Director of LTLF, Fr. George Ehusani described Kaduna as a pluralistic state with Muslims and Christian population cutting across different ethic groups.

He stated that the sensitisation which drew stakeholders at the grassroots, was aimed at seeking their understanding and collaboration to serve as preventive agents against violence before, during and after the elections.

According to Majeed, if the communities themselves take ownership of peace processes, it will be effective and form a strong barrier against religion and ethnic manipulation against the people by those seeking to divide and rule them.

He further said that religion has been one of the major drawbacks for Nigeria’s development since transition from military to civil rule.

Politics of identity in terms of religion and ethnicity has been our problem, it has been identified by the stakeholders in this workshop as the mitigating factor for peaceful co-existence and national development.

“Identity politics should have no place in modern politics, it undermines democracy which is government of the majority, identity politics makes it a government of ethnic and religious majority.”

“The Government of ethnic and religious majority will create ethnic and religious minority that is perpetually marginalized which create tension, undermining and derail the polity to stage failure,” Majeed stressed.

He therefore urged Nigerians to avoid ethnic and religious politics, while describing Nigeria as a young but adult democracy.

Some of the participants, Malam Ismail Usman and Mr Ishaya Shekara said the workshop was timely and thought provoking.

The duo called on parents to ensure they caution their children against engaging as agents of distraction for politicians, before during and after the elections.

They thanked the organisers of the workshop, while pledging to play their roles as community leaders to ensure guidance and control of the youths in the upcoming elections.

Hayin Banki, Kawo, Abakpa, Malali and Anguwan Kanawa are among other communities of Kaduna North LGA that participated in the programme.

Kaduna state government warns against breakdown of law and order

0

Kaduna State government says it has received credible intelligence reports of plans by various groups to deliberately disrupt public peace, by organizing street protests.

Government therefore advised citizens to avoid all actions remotely capable of inciting a breakdown of law and order, reminding residents that such protests remain strictly prohibited.

This was contained in a statement signed by Samuel Aruwan, Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs in Kaduna State.

Aruwan disclosed that government empathizes with citizens who have been placed in untold distress as a result of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s cash swap policy, saying residents must shun the baiting of mischievous groups hoping to ride on these hardships to incite violence.

According to him, government is also studying options for addressing challenges being faced by citizens with regard to transport to their places of work.

“Any resort to unruly or violent conduct is illegal and against the public interest which values law and order.”

He said security agencies have been placed on high alert and have been directed by government to decisively uphold law and order.

“Citizens are therefore urged to maintain calm and to remain peaceful and law-abiding as they prepare to exercise their civic franchise in an atmosphere free of all forms of threat,” the statement concluded.

2023: Anambra State APC commissions 8,326 ward agents

0

Anambra State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress APC has commissioned a total of 8,326 ward agents and canvassers less than seven days to the general election.

A breakdown of this figure indicates that one youth leader, one ward coordinator and ward chairmen and 20 canvassers each came from 362 wards in the state.

Commissioning, the ward canvassers and wards leaders, the State Coordinator of APC Presidential Campaign Council PCC, Senator Margery Okadigbo urged them to work hard to ensure victory of the party, noting that they should go into the election as united one house without division.

According to her, the party belongs to the grassroots, and there is no party in Abuja.

We employed you to go into the election with full determination and focused. Evey body in each ward is needed for this job. I want you help put Anambra APC into national political map. We want the geographical spread, we most get at least 25 percent in Anambra. If one wins 100 percent in 10 state and loses others he has not won, but if he wins 25 percent in 24 states, he has won.

Anambra is good and we must make it better” she said.

According to her, APC is a great party and members must make it better, urging members to stop hiding as party member in the state as nobody can harm them. She said the youths are critical in any election, urging them to work for their tomorrow and not to hid themselves in the state as APC Members.

” I want to commend you on your past commitment to the mobilisation of members at the presidential rally .You are still on duty till the end of the election. This election is in your hands.

I want you to put more efforts in the politics, the benefit is high. Be patient, don’t see politics as something with immediate benefits, the benefit comes with time. What iam enjoying toddy is what Dr. Chu Okadigbo planted many years ago .

We should make APC bigger and better in Anambra state” she stated.

She also called on the ward’s chairmen to treat all the women in their wards fairly, noting that they must not be sidelined.

The state Chairman of APC chief Basil Ejidike said they have a new brand party in the state where everybody is a part.

You see how others’ structures are collapsing into APC in the country, we compliant of marginalisation, while we marginalise ourselves. The Igbo are working into opposition and opposition in oppositions.

You have demonstrated that you have strength, but this is the time of deploying the strength to actions. We want each person to get at least five persons to vote APC. We want you to prove the strength in the elections so that we will have something to stand when things are okayed” he said

He said that everybody will be rewarded according to his/ her deliverance, stating that the problem they had over the years was lack of reward system.

The state campaign rally coordinator, Azuka Okwuosa urged the ward leadership to replicate campaign rally experience in the election.

We have our brother who is contesting for president, we most not put our egg in one basket. The Igbo most be strategic and not emotional. We always use our mind instead of our heads,we are always emotional about politics” he said .

He recalled how the party lost principal political positions in the 2015 general elections but noted that the party would definitely be in the main stream of the community APC government in the country.

Our people don’t know that it is not good to put their eggs in one basket. We had a slot for Senate President and we lost it and also lost a lot of principal political positions. But the South West divided themselves with 45 percent in PDP and 55 percent in the APC and at the end of that election they did not lose out ”

“In our own case we lost everything and this will not happen again because we have that impetus to win and this election is the greatest opportunity for us to be part of the new government of the APC ” he said.

Ivorians welcome land borders reopening

0

The reopening of land borders between Ivory Coast and its neighbours was greeted with joy by many on the streets after the government’s announcement.

Since March 2020 that the Ivorian authorities closed all borders after the country was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I am very happy (with the reopening of the border between Ivory Coast and Ghana, Ed.) it allows me to take my bus from Niamey to Abidjan anfrom Abidjan to Niamey (without any changes, Ed.) because it’s been three years since I returned to Abidjan. It hurt me a lot. Today, I am happy because I am going to return to Abidjan and find my old friends”, said Yahaya Djerwo, driver of the bus coming from Niger via Ghana.

Ivory Coast borders LiberiaGuineaMaliBurkina Faso and Ghana.
Border closures led to economic hardship along towns reliant on cross-border trade.

“It is the Ghanaians who are our customers. With the closure (of the borders, Ed.), they could no longer come and buy our products, so many of them have gone out of date. As we heard yesterday that the borders have been opened, so this morning I brought a truck (of rice, Ed.) for the shop there, we really hope that it will start to work again”, concluded Adamou Madougou Hassan, trader at the Ivory Coast-Ghana border.

Ivorian sea and air borders reopened after a few months but land borders remained closed until now.

Blinken to talk earthquake aid in Turkey visit

0

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will arrive on Sunday in Turkey, for an official visit and discuss how Washington can further assist Ankara as it grapples with the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that killed tens of thousands of people.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey’s southeast and neighboring Syria on Feb. 6, killing more than 45,000 people and leaving over a million people homeless along with an economic cost expected to run into billions of dollars.

Also topping the agenda will be the stalled NATO bids of Sweden and Finland, which Turkey has so far refused to ratify, saying Stockholm in particular has harbored what it calls members of terrorist groups. Ankara has recently indicated it would approve only Finland.

The top U.S. diplomat will land at Incirlik Air Base in the southern province of Adana, from where he will take a helicopter tour of the quake-struck area.

He will then hold bilateral talks on Monday with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu.
Blinken is also expected to meet with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, sources familiar with the planning said.

Since the earthquake, the United States has sent a search and rescue team to Turkey, medical supplies, concrete-breaking machinery, and additional funding of $85 million in humanitarian aid that also covers Syria.

Blinken’s first visit to Turkey as secretary of state has been in the works for some time but comes two years after he took office, in stark contrast with some of his predecessors including Hillary Clinton and Rex Tillerson, who made the visit within the first three months of their terms.

The delay, analysts say, shows the strained nature of the relationship, which has soured particularly since 2019 when Ankara acquired Russian missile defense systems.

While the United States has praised Turkey for some of its actions during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it remains worried over its close relationship with Moscow, experts say.

NATO DEADLOCK

Sweden and Finland applied last year to join the trans-Atlantic defense pact after Russia invaded Ukraine, but faced unexpected objections from Turkey and have since sought to win its support.

Ankara wants Helsinki and Stockholm in particular to take a tougher line against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is considered a terror group by Turkey and the European Union, and another group it blames for a 2016 coup attempt.

In January, Erdogan said he was open to ratifying only Helsinki’s application.
Linked to the membership bids is Turkey’s desire to buy U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets, a sale the U.S. Congress has objected to, unless at least Ankara gives the greenlight for the Nordic accession process.

On Saturday, Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen echoed that sentiment and said allowing Finland to join the alliance alone would not be enough.

“There will be no transfer of F-16s if Erdogan continues to deny admission to Finland and Sweden … He doesn’t get to have Finland in and the F-16s approved and I think that’s a broad sentiment,” Van Hollen said in an interview.

The Biden administration has repeatedly said it supports the sale and while it has refrained from linking the two issues, it has acknowledged that the approval for the Nordic countries would have a positive impact among members of Congress.

Turkey has expressed its frustration that the issues are seen increasingly linked. Ibrahim Kalin, Erdogan’s chief foreign policy advisor, said last month he hoped the F-16 deal would not become “hostage” to the NATO memberships of Sweden and Finland.

NIDCOM advocates for joint efforts to curb irregular migration

0

The Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called on all participants at the European Union and International Organisation for Migration (IOM) joint management workshop, to make use of the knowledge impacted on them to join in the fight against irregular migration.

She made the call at the closing ceremony of the workshop which focused on lessons learnt from Migration Management Programmes held from 2020-2022, in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Dr. Dabiri-Erewa encouraged all stakeholders to come together and compliment the efforts of the government in their own individual capacity by giving their best regardless of the national situation.

“Migration is a natural phenomenon that cannot be stopped. However, irregular migration must be tainted and we all have a role to play. Now that we are better informed, I appeal to us to take migration issues with outmost concern. The President Muhammadu Buhari Administration has repatriated over 10,000 Nigerians from Libya and other countries.”

“IOM has also done a lot in this regards, yet there are still many Nigerians out there crying for help. Let us all give our contributions to curbing irregular migration by using the knowledge learnt here and sensitizing our immediate society,” Dabiri-Erewa added.

European Union Representative, Eleni Zerzelidou commended the Chairman, NiDCOM for being proactive in dealing with migration issues and urged the commission to take part in the sector of Fintech and Integration, noting that the commission has the potential.

The workshop was an EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Integration.

DRC Women call for M23 rebels departure

0

Hundreds of displaced women in Goma called for the departure of the rebel group M23 and an end to the violence in Eastern Congo.

The women said they’re suffering from hunger and their children have been unable to attend school.

With babies on their back, they chanted slogans and carried signs demanding justice and peace. “M23 makes us suffer. We are hungry, even our husbands have been killed,” said Kasikiti Asuta, 42, displaced mother of four children.

The conflict in eastern Congo has gone on for decades, with more than 100 armed groups fighting for control of valuable mineral resources while others protect their communities, and has triggered an exodus of refugees.

The demonstration took place while the East African Heads of State were meeting in Addis Ababa at a special summit to discuss the security issue in eastern DRC.

The day before the protest, the Congolese army clashed with M23 rebels a few kilometres from the Goma.

Thursday evening, the Congolese army denounced the attack against its positions by the M23, in violation of the ceasefire as recommended by the East African Heads of State, at a recent Burundi Summit.

Earlier in December, the United Nations accused the rebels of being responsible for massacring more than 130 civilians in two villages.

2023: ‘Undemocratic’ idea of interim government should be rejected – NPSA

0

The Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA), has called for total rejection of Interim Government in the country saying such is diversionary and intended to truncate the democratic rights of Nigerians, and will result in democratic reversals with dire consequences.

This was said as part of recommendation in the communique issued by the body at the end of their roundtable held in Abuja on attaining electoral integrity in the Country’s 2023 General Election, signed by the President ,Professor Hassan Saliu.

The body said, “The idea of an Interim Government and various permutations, such as the Doctrine of Necessity, that echo it, are diversionary and are intended to truncate the democratic rights of Nigerians.”

According to the body, such action will result in democratic reversals with dire consequences for the country and should, therefore, be rejected and shut down.

This was noted in the wake of the claim made by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai which has aroused apprehension from various quarters on the possibility of the highly anticipated elections might not hold which may lead to appointment of an Interim Government.

It would be recalled that the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Thursday described the current scarcity of naira notes and the federal government policy as part of an alleged plot to disrupt the forthcoming general election to ensure an interim government takes over.

However speaking recently, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the claim was the handiwork of fifth columnist, planning to destabilise the country.

Similarly, the presidency, in a statement issued by Presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu on Friday, said those spreading the rumour of interim government are only causing panic.

Let us clearly, specifically and emphatically state that there is absolutely no truth to the claim that President Muhammadu Buhari is working towards an interim government or even worse, the truncation of democracy – democracy that he has helped to keep alive not only here at home, in West Africa but throughout the continent,” Shehu explained.
