First Class Finch Bows Out In Altered Landscape

0

First class Aaron Finch, who called time on his international career on Tuesday, had his first brush with the elite stars of the global game when he faced Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly in 2007.

The Indians were in whites but this was not a test match but a first-class match between Finch’s state side, Victoria, and the touring test squad at Melbourne’s suburban Junction Oval.

Such matches have become an anachronism over Finch’s long and distinguished career, but the erstwhile Australia limited overs captain still recalled the curtailed contest with fondness.

“It was amazing,” Finch said with a smile in Townsville last year. “It was meant to be a three-day game and 40 overs in, it was just rained out … But I got a stat in the game. Didn’t get a bat, didn’t get a bowl.”

That stat came courtesy of catch at mid-off to dismiss India opener Wasim Jaffer for a duck off the bowling of left-arm paceman Allan Wise. Although it was 11 years before Finch again faced India in whites during his brief test career, he went on to accumulate an impressive array of stats in the shorter formats.

A T20 and ODI World Cup winner, he twice held the record for the highest score in a Twenty20 international with his 172 against Zimbabwe in 2018, bettering his own mark of 156 against England in Southampton in 2013.

The limited-overs cricket that made his name, however, filled up the playing schedule and effectively killed off the first-class tour matches against states, counties and provinces in Australia and abroad.

“The tour games are something that have become less of a priority because guys tend to fly in later for tours,” Finch said. “The Big Bash is going longer and longer, which means the (Sheffield) Shield and the one-day competition gets condensed more and more.”

The last time a state played a full first-class fixture against a touring side in Australia was 2010, and these days tourists are more likely to face hand-picked invitational squads if they want a tune-up for tests.

“If it’s played in the right conditions and it’s a good-spirited game (and) not just a ‘bat-a-thon’ for the visiting team, then I think they’re very valuable,” Finch said. “I’d love to see a full eleven-on-eleven match but I think they are probably dying a little bit, aren’t they?”

The burly opener said that involving lower-ranked international teams in warm-up matches before major series could be a creative alternative.

“Even if it’s a short tri-series or something like that, where you’re playing, potentially, teams like Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands to continue to grow the game,” he said. “The more and more that we can commit to doing that, I think the better the health of world cricket can be.”

Rose Eyes Ryder Cup Return

0

Britain’s Justin Rose has set his sights on making a push for Europe’s Ryder Cup team for this year’s event in Rome after he ended a four-year wait for a PGA Tour victory by winning the weather-delayed Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California on Monday.

Former world number one and 2013 U.S. Open champion Rose, 42, carded a final-round 66 to end the week on 18 under par, recording a three-shot victory after the final round was suspended on Sunday because of darkness.

Rose finished ahead of Americans Brendon Todd and Brandon Wu to lift his first trophy since the Farmers Insurance Open in 2019 and 11th on the PGA Tour.

Rose, who has a 13-8-2 record against the United States in the Ryder Cup, missed out on selection for Europe’s team in 2021 when they were thrashed 19-9 at Whistling Straits and said he hopes to be part of Luke Donald’s line-up for the Sept. 25-Oct 1 tournament.

“I haven’t even entertained what the Ryder Cup looks like for me, other than I want to be there,” Rose said.

“What was really important to me was getting off to a good start on the PGA Tour so I wasn’t under pressure later in the season, so I could turn my attentions to the Ryder Cup and the European Tour.

“A win does give you a lot of belief. We always know we can do it, but sometimes you’ve got to see the proof.”

Rose said it was a big relief to secure qualification for this year’s Masters at Augusta National in April, for which he had not yet been eligible after plummeting to world number 84 earlier this year and entering last week at 71.

Augusta’s definitely been a big part of being on my mind. I thought the simple way to approach it was try to play my way into the top 50 in the world,” said Rose, whose victory moved him up to 35.

An incredible week from start to finish with so much happening in my favour.”

LeBron Chasing Wins And Not Record

0

LeBron James may be on the verge of breaking one of the most coveted records in sports, but his teammates said his focus is on helping the Lakers climb in the standings and not the 36 points he needs to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

The mood was relaxed as practice wrapped up on a sunsoaked Southern California day, but the large number of reporters on hand made it clear that excitement to see James surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s tally of 38,387 points was intensifying.

“You are not going to see this for a while. Someone who’s able to play for this long and be as productive as he’s been since day one.

“Everybody is excited for him, but we’re still trying to win games and hopefully we do that the same night he breaks the record.”

The Lakers are 25-29 and 13th in the Western Conference standings but just four games off the number four seed.

James, who is averaging 30 points a game in his 20th season, will get his first chance at the historic accomplishment on Tuesday when the Lakers host the Oklahoma City Thunder.

If he comes up short, he will have another opportunity to reach the mountaintop at home on Thursday against the Milwaukee Bucks.

“At the end of the day he’s not going to change the way he plays, he just wants to win games,” Reaves said. “So if it happens tomorrow or if it happens the next game, as long as we’re winning, I think that’s the main thing that he’s worried about.”

Lakers head coach Darvin Ham said James, who declined to speak to reporters on Monday, has tuned out the noise.

“He’s aware of it, obviously, but he hasn’t been caught up in it, his biggest thing is to win games.” he said.

He continued; “Everyone will be on the edge of their seats. It’s good for the Lakers, good for the NBA and a hell of an accomplishment for LeBron, who has done it while playing the right way.”

Court Stops Buhari, CBN from interfering with cash policy

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Nigeria, has stopped President Mohammadu Buhari, the Central Bank of Nigeria, its governor and 27 commercial banks from suspending, stopping, extending or interfering with the currency redesign terminal date of February 10 or issue any directive contrary to the February 10 deadline.
In a Motion by five of the eighteen political parties, the ourt, presided over by Justice Aneojo Enenche also granted an order directing the Chief Executives of the banks to show cause why they should not be arrested and prosecuted for sabotaging the country through their illegal hoarding, withholding, not paying or disbursing the new Naira notes despite supply of such notes by the Country’s Apex Bank.
The order also ties the hands of bank CEO’s and their staff who have been alleged to be hoarding the new bank notes and trading with them thereby causing untold hardship to citizens.

Recall that the CBN in late 2022, announced a new cash policy, which saw the redesign of the 200, 500, and 1000 Naira notes denomination.

It placed a deadline of January 31 for the old notes to cease to serve as legal tender.

However, there has been a resultant cash scarcity, which has brought about long queues at banks, and people have now resorted to buying the new naira from hoarders.

As a result, the President, Muhammadu Buhari, extended the deadline from January 31 to February 10.

Gombe Governor pays N3 billion gratuity to Retirees

0

The Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya has flagged off the payment of N1.3 billion gratuity to local government retirees, from 2012 to 2015 and another N1.7 billion gratuity to the state retirees for 2017 making it a total of N3 billion.

So far, the administration of Governor Yahaya has paid the sum of N7.9 billion to retirees in both state and local government areas.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Governor Yahaya said his administration inherited a backlog of over N21 billion gratuity for both the State and local government area retirees from the past administration, comprising N14 billion outstanding for state pensions obligation and over N7 billion debts for the state pensioners.

Governor Yahaya, however, said State Pensioners from 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 had been paid their entitlements, reducing the debt burden for gratuities by N6.6 billion.

For the payment for retirees in the 11 local government areas, who had not been paid in 11 years, Governor Yahaya said they would be in this round of payment of the total of N1.3 billion, ranging between 1 and 4 years depending on their financial capacities.

“The LGA’s will continue to reduce their backlogs as their finances improve. Total gratuity payment by this administration as at today stands at N7.9bn. Recall that upon assumption of office by this administration all the LGA’s were in red and had to take a loan of N1.3bn to pay salaries, a situation that had persisted throughout the tenure of the past administration,” said Governor Yahaya.

He highlighted the successes his administration had recorded in the local government areas including the timely and constant payment of salaries of local government workers’ salaries without borrowing from the bank, as was previously done.

According to Governor Yahaya, Local Government Areas had been able to undertake capital projects, in conjunction with the state government, through the Joint Projects Development Agency, which he says Is a brainchild of this administration. All these would not have been possible without our administration’s prudent fiscal management.

At the state level, Governor Yahaya said his administration had implemented the N30,000 minimum wage since its introduction by the Federal Government and had continued to pay, without fail even as this had increased our wage bill by N2.8bn annually.

He said his administration had also promoted over 104 directors in the state civil service and appointed 13 permanent Secretaries, who had all been duly paid their promotion arrears.

Similarly, the Gombe State Governor said his administration had also approved the promotion of 26,085 staff in the LGAs, Local Education Authority and the Primary Health Care, with their financial implication effective February 2023.

“This exercise has an additional annual financial implication of N1.3bn. Recall that the last time a teacher was promoted in the state was in 2009, The State Government has also recently recruited 1000 teachers into the state service as part of our efforts towards repositioning the state educational sector,” said Governor Yahaya.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Manassah Jatau, shared his experience as a retired Customs officer, by commending Governor Yahiya’s sincerity of purpose in keeping his promises to the senior citizens, who have served in the state.

The Chairman, Gratuity and Pension Disbursement Committee, who doubles as the Auditor General of Gombe State, Mr Muhammad Buba Gombe, said since the beginning of the committee’s formation, the governor directed that all retirees should be enrolled in the pension payroll after retirement.

The Governor first released N1.6 billion to settle retirees in the first 100 days of his administration, for retirees in 2014 and again in N1.5 billion for 2015 and another 1.6 for 2016 for the settling of gratuities for the retirees in the state civil service.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Dasuki Waziri, commended the measures taken by Governor Yahaya to address the problems associated with gratuity payment in the state, in which he said spanned to the past ten years, such that local governments were having difficulties paying salaries.

Mr. Waziri said Governor Yahaya had ensured that the LGAs became financially autonomous, which had made them to be paying the salaries of their workers by themselves to date.

He said the Governor had now directed LGAs that could pay up to four years of gratuities should go ahead and do so.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Yakubu Kala Hinna explained that the retirees are full of appreciation for Governor Inuwa’s faithfulness in payment of their benefits as he promised them, assuring of their unflinching support and that of their families towards his second term bid.

Supreme Court judgement a victory for democracy – Senate President

0

President of the Nigerian Senate, Ahmad Lawan says the judgement delivered on Monday by the Supreme Court on the disputed All Progressives Congress (APC) Yobe North Senatorial ticket was victory for his party APC and democracy.

The Supreme Court, in its judgement, affirmed Senator Ahmad Lawan as the APC Senatorial candidate for Yobe North ahead of the February 25th National Assembly polls.

The judgement, in effect, set aside the earlier judgements of the lower courts which declared Bashir Machina as the candidate.

Speaking to journalists after the judgement was delivered, Senator Lawan said: “the Supreme Court Judgement of today on Yobe North is a victory for all APC in Yobe and generally for APC across the country.

“What happened was democracy at work. The lower courts gave their various judgements and then the Supreme Court gave the final judgement. I want to commend the Supreme Court and infact the judiciary generally for delivering this kind of judgement to strengthen our democracy.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) for taking this matter to the Supreme Court.

“Actually, I didn’t, as an individual, go to the Supreme Court to seek redress. But my party did and my people, the people of Yobe North and Yobe State generally and many political associates and well wishers and supporters across the country who showed interest that there has to be an appeal at the Supreme Court on this matter.

Symbol of Democracy
So today, this victory is for all of us involved. I am the symbol but the victory is for our party, the APC and for democracy.

“I want to thank all my colleagues in the Senate for the support, for the love, for the partnership and I want to recommit myself to ensuring that the leadership of the Senate will continue to lead very well, will always be appreciative of our colleagues who have given us the mandate to lead the ninth Senate.

“Now, we will be looking at the 25th of February when the Presidential and National Assembly elections will take place. By the Grace of God, Nigeria will vote APC once again.

“And when it comes to the Senatorial candidate and House of Representatives, you know what it will be. It will be a landslide majority for the Senate APC and at the same thing landslide majority of members in the House of Representatives.

“We intend to continue to give Nigeria leadership. To continue with those programmes and projects that we have been doing very well and re-think, re-work and re-tool those that we think we have not done very well. This, I believe, will make Nigeria better.”

Atiku Pledges To Address Herders/Farmers Crisis

0

Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar has promised to address the age long crisis between farmers and herdsmen across the country, if elected President of Nigeria.

Atiku Abubakar made the pledge in Makurdi, the Capital of Benue State in North Central Nigeria at the presidential campaign rally of PDP.

He particularly apologised and condoled with the families and Government of Benue State over the deaths which occured as a result of clashes between herders and farmers in the state and promised to reunite the people as a title holder of “Zege Mule U Tiv”, the umbrella of all the Tiv people worldwide.

I promise you, if you elect me, just as I did in 2011, when I came and made all the Fulani to sign a Peace Accord with their Tiv brothers, I will come and make sure peace returns to Benue”.

The Presidential Candidate acknowledged the status of Benue State as the food basket of the nation but regretted that farmers in the state can no longer go to their farmers because of insecurity.

Today, our farmers in this state can’t go to farm again because of insecurity. I will make sure security returns to Benue State”.

He also said his administration would address the issue of unemployment headlong by providing jobs for the teeming youths of Nigeria.

I promise you, by the grace of God, unemployment will be a thing of the past. That is why in my policy document, I said we are going to allocate 10 billion US dollars to empower our young men and women with enterprises”.

You know what we did between 1999 and 2015. We brought jobs, we brought prosperity, we brought peace to this country. We have the experience to repeat those things again. This is the reason why you must trust us with your mandate again”.

On the issue of infrastructure deficit, Mr. Atiku gave the assurance that his administration will address it in line with his policy document which is aimed at reinvigorating the transportation system.

The infrastructural deficit you are facing in this state in terms of connectivity with other neighbouring states will be fixed because we are going to make sure that we vote funding for development of both roads and railways to make sure our transportation system is once again working”.

Railway System
Atiku promised to fix the moribund railway system which places Benue State as the gateway linking both the Northern and Southern parts of the country.

The PDP presidential candidate reaffirmed his resolve to end incessant strikes in Nigerian Universities through adequate funding and regular payment of salaries to the academic and non academic staff.

I have a private University, we have never gone on strike for one day. So, if a private University cannot go on strike for one day, why should a public University go on strike.

National Chairman of PDP, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu said the leadership of the party is working tirelessly to bring back the aggrieved G-5 Governors of into the fold, giving the assurance that the party was ready to welcome them.

Ayu who disagreed with some misconceptions that the party was divided commended Governor Victor Ikpeazu of Abia State for taking the bold step to reunite with the party and urged other members of the G-5 Governors to reconsider their decision in the greater interest of Nigerian masses who are looking up to PDP to provide succour to the nation.

I’m conscious of the fact that time is not on our side but I can assure you that one week is enough to bring our aggrieved members back into the fold”, Ayu stated.
