Burkina Faso Holds Algeria In World Cup Qualifier

0

Reigning African champions Algeria stretched its unbeaten run after picking up a point away from home in the qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso.

The Algerians came into the match with heaps of confidence after their opening day 8-0 thrashing of Djibouti and wanted to pick a successive win to get themselves firmly in the driver’s seat.

They threatened early in the 10th minute when Royad Mahrez’s teasing cross from the right evaded the target by inches with Islam Silimani arriving a few seconds late to try make a touch on goal.

But The Desert Foxes got themselves ahead after 17 minutes in sublime fashion. Youce Belaili won the ball deep in his team’s own half before sending Silimani through on the right with a lovely pass. The forward then cut back a cross into the box which Soufiane Feghouli tapped into an empty net.

They should have been 2-0 up seven minutes later, but Rami Bensebaini’s point blank header from a Mahrez freekick was well saved by Burkina Faso goalkeeper Herve Koffi. Burkina Faso had a chance in the 28th minute when Issa Kabore drifted into the box from the right, but he dragged his shot straight to the goalkeeper.

On the half hour mark, Algeria had a brilliant chance to extend its lead. Another precise pass from Belaili fell on Slimani who did well to sit one defender down, but his shot at goal from a tight angle was blocked by the keeper.

In the second half, Burkina Faso came with more speed and precision. They were patient in attack and that ultimately paid off after 64 minutes when Abdoul Tapsoba drew level.

Algeria should have retaken the lead after a counter in the 72nd minute when they defended a corner well. Mahrez picked the ball at the edge of the six yard box and checked on substitute Baghdad Bounedjah’s run, but the ball clipped the latter’s heels when he was through on goal.

The home side attempted to increase the pressure on the North Africans, but their efforts came to nothing as the match finished 1-1.

Algeria tops Group A on four points, on goal difference to Burkina Faso. Niger (3 points) and Djibouti (0) follow in that order.

FIFA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings For Abandoned Brazil-Argentina Match

0

World football’s governing body FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings into Sunday’s Brazil v Argentina World Cup qualifier which was abandoned after five minutes due to intervention by health officials.

Brazilian health authorities invaded the pitch to stop the game after accusing four of Argentina’s English Premier League players of violating the country’s COVID-19 quarantine rules.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and Tottenham Hotspur duo Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso were on the Neo Quimica Arena field as part of Argentina’s team when officials from Brazil’s health regulator Anvisa halted the match.

“Following the analysis of the official match reports related to the FIFA World Cup qualifier match between Brazil and Argentina, FIFA can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened involving both member associations,” FIFA said in a statement.

“The two teams were asked to provide further information on the facts that led to the suspension of the match, which will be gathered and then thoroughly reviewed by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee.”

Anvisa said Brazilian rules make clear that travellers who have been in the UK, South Africa or India during the previous 14 days are forbidden from entering the country unless they are Brazilian citizens or have permanent residency.

It said Argentine players had made false statements about their previous whereabouts on immigration forms. Brazil’s Federal Police said on Monday they had opened a formal inquiry into the actions of the Argentine players who, a spokesperson said, were deported.

Argentina’s Aston Villa midfielder Emiliano Buendia had also travelled from the UK and was in the stands.

The National Youth Games is scheduled to hold from 10th to 19th of October 2021 in Ilorin, Kwara state.

Amfani Industrial Park and Smart City: a peep into Nigeria’s Future.

There is high hope in realizing Nigeria’s quest for modern development going by the tempo of economic activities taking place across the country and especially in Amfani Industrial Park and Smart City located in Magama Local Government in Niger State northern part of the country.

Before now the quiet Amfani town was unknown but has suddenly earned itself a prized position in tourism, in turn creating enviable opportunities in the provision of means of livelihood to Nigerians and foreigners alike.

This smart City shares its boundary with the famous Kanji Lake and the Kainji National Park known for wildlife, beautiful scenery inhabited by yet to be fully explored flora and fauna and its closeness with the Nigerian Air Force Base in Kainji, gives added sense of security.

All these will increase the potential for foreign direct investment.

In this Smart City one finds an Export Free Zone and in terms of industrialization it will handle light, medium and heavy industrial activities and the International Cargo Airport will make life very easy for investors“, Mr. Al-Amin Muhammed, the Marketing Manager says.

The objectives

The driving force behind the creation of Amfani Industrial Park and Smart City include, creating a special economic zone that meets global standard; creating employment opportunities, wealth and skills acquisition; creating innovative services towards sustainable industrial and socio-economic development in Africa. The project also seeks to provide local and foreign investors with the best business environment to operate; to facilitate technology transfer and development of high-tech industries, to fast-track industrialization and socio-economic development of Nigeria and to provide a platform for utilization of Nigeria’s abundant resources for example raw materials, human capital.

Tourism and hospitality

The mega city is already pooling experts from across the work to ensure that it meets the expected goal.  This smart City has a lot waiting for investors. After some hard work there’s room for relaxation. Its proximity to the Kainji Lake confers on it, the advantage of a great view, the right topography and atmosphere for a Golf course, polo field, as well as football fields which will be of international standard upon which even international field competitions can hold.

It is also to have a hospital of international standard which will then make the place a hub for medical tourism, retaining resources taken out of this country for that purpose , while attracting more into the country.

What about having some fishing festivals and boat regatta? The vision and mission here is far and well focused to make every dream come true. Imagine a world of relaxation at the water front, cruising with boats with options of being on board taking a ride and taking the breeze from the clean lake .

Wild life and game reserve

Children and those in love with wild life will definitely be given a good treat. In the Kainji National Park, Kenyan, South Africans and Zimbabwean experts and other foreign nationalities will provide their expertise when it comes to wild life management. Many animals that are on the verge of extinction will be protected to save them from extinction and also to protect and ensure the balance of the ecosystem.

Floating farm

Its agro-lied business will be effective to the extent that some of its farms will be floating right inside the lake integrating fish farming, vegetables, fruits and other agro allied businesses. The aqua culture as envisaged by the management of this city will be a reality as residents, visitors; workers will eat from this project more so when the intention is to go full time export in such an Export Free Zone.

Land mass

A project of this magnitude will leave people guessing as to the size of the land available for these gigantic projects. Mr. Al-Amin Mohammed says “it is a stretch of 2,000 hectares of land”.

No wonder it can house a university, an industrial site, banks, hotels and recreational centres, kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, shopping malls and complexes, mini stadium and other indoor games. And what a surprise there is an area for mining as Niger State has very many condensates of solid minerals. The smart City is a future market for gold not forgetting the nickel deposits in Southern Kaduna that could be sold in this market.

The Manager in charge of the Mining Mr. Amadu Babani says “Nigeria, indeed Africa will have what I call a common market”. In terms of mining, all necessary papers and documents have been signed with the Nigerian Mining Cadastre office in Abuja. “We are ready and capable to take Africa by storm  when it comes to mining”, Mr. Babani, a geologist says, adding that  “Our company is ready for this African Common market”.

Already, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Nigerian Export Promotion Zone Authority, the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission and the Niger State Government are partners in the project.

Status of work now

The year 2021 has been a year of bee hive of activities. All paper works have been completed paving way for the commencement of construction. Right now construction of injection substation and power lines are on top gear the same with construction of water and sewage treat plants. Many people; Nigerians and foreigners alike have been trooping in to see things for themselves some already indicating areas of investment interest in this Amfani Industrial Park and Smart City.

Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited and Hydropolis Investments Limited are the brain boxes of the projects.

Senior Gambian official quits over Jammeh coalition

0

A close ally and senior figure in Gambian President Adama Barrow’s government has quit in protest over a new alliance between the president’s party and that of former long-serving leader Yahya Jammeh.

Mr Barrow defeated the former president in the 2016 elections, who initially refused to step down but then fled the country after a month-long stand-off.

A commission of inquiry into crimes committed during Mr Jammeh’s presidency is due to report its findings to President Barrow this month.

The ex-president has faced numerous charges of rape, as well as other crimes including torture, murder and arbitrary arrests.

“It is my firm belief that this particular alliance undermines the integrity of your government and jeopardises everything I stood for as a journalist,” said Mr Barrow’s former communications adviser Fatou Jaw Manneh when announcing her resignation.

Human rights groups are calling the alliance a betrayal, and fear that the government may be unwilling to prosecute Mr Jammeh despite the atrocities reportedly committed during his years in power.

The alliance has been formed three months ahead of presidential elections in which Mr Barrow is running for a second term.

He also commended the Federal Government for increasing Corps members’ allowances, adding that the provision of a free medicare will spur them into higher level of service delivery to their fatherland.

Prof. Sambo said as a result of efforts by the NHIS to deepen the implementation of the rebranding agenda in the agency, it has developed a five-tenure strategic plan among other innovations.

He disclosed that the NHIS and State Health Insurance Agencies are developing a new initiative tagged; “Health Insurance Under One Roof“, where the two agencies would ensure adequate free medicare for all Nigerians.

“As Nigeria is passing through difficult economic situation, the need for prudent and transparent management of our resources is therefore crucial to national economic development. Therefore, this retreat is coming at the right time,” Governor Yahaya said.

He stated that the Gombe State Government was within the last two year able to plug leakages to eliminating redundancies, embarked on public service reforms and fiscal discipline and chart a new course for the State, built on the foundation of prudence, efficiency and transparency.

Kogi State Shows Appreciation For Status As Oil Producing State

0

Sequel to the recent proclamation of Kogi State as an oil producing State, the Governor of the State, Yahaya Bello on Tuesday paid a thank you visit to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Addressing State House correspondents soon after he met behind closed doors with the Nigerian leader, the Governor said it’s a thing of pride to note that Kogi is the first State in Northern Nigeria to assume that status.

He said: “I came to see our father, Mr. President, to thank him on behalf of the good people of Kogi State that today, Kogi is the first Nigerian Northern State to be referred to as an oil producing state. We came to appreciate Mr. President, for that magnanimity, and also to congratulate the people of Kogi state, and Nigerians, generally.

“The fact that we are oil producing today, I want to assure all the citizens of Kogi state and Nigerians that the mistake that we made in the past where Nigeria depended on oil alone, as a source of revenue, today, will not be repeated.

“Whatever is going to be accruing to Kogi state will be used to support all other sectors, the Agric sector, manufacturing, and several other sectors of our economy to ensure that it is going to serve as a catalyst. It’s not going to be just the only means upon which we shall depend, no. We will not make that mistake.”

Governor Yahaya Bello said his discussion with the President touched on the resuscitation and completion of work on the Ajaokuta Steel company located in Kogi.

He said the President had pledged that the project would be completed before the end of his tenure in 2023.

“We equally brought a request to the effect that the Ajaokuta steel company is still moribund. And his efforts in ensuring that he revives Ajaokuta steel complex. We submit a submission to the effect that he should in the life of his administration, be able to complete that Ajaokuta complex.

“And Mr. President received all of these and more with pleasure and he promised that something is going to be done to ensure that Ajaokuta is revived and running before the end of this administration,”.

EFCC’s Allegation

On the recent findings made by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the misappropriation of bail-out funds, the Governor said EFCC’s allegation was not true.

“No Kogi State government’s salary account is frozen. None whatsoever. None of our accounts were frozen or embargo placed on any of our accounts by EFCC at all. I think it’s just a misrepresentation of facts or is a joke taken too far.

“My Information Commissioner and all those that are concerned with the lies peddled by the EFCC, I think they have responded appropriately. And I will urge each and every Nigerian to please go to Kogi State’s website and see. All the facts are there.

“The Banks have denied that we don’t have such an account. And besides that, the bailout fund that we obtained, we appropriated in line with the agreement and understanding between Kogi State government and the workers. And we finished all of these, you know, in the year 2019.

“So first, there’s no N20 billion account, or N19 billion era, no fixed deposit account. So I don’t know where the lie is coming from. I think in the days ahead; you will hear exactly where the matter shall be resolved. That’s why I said that it is a joke taken too far. And I want to believe that the officials of the EFCC may have misled the commission.

“Well, like I said, Mr. President’s fight against corruption has nothing to do with politics. So whoever wants to probably attack my towering name and integrity, because of 2023 is making a mistake. Because fighting corruption should ordinarily have nothing to do with political affiliation or political interest. If you’re targeting me because of 2023, then it is a big mistake because you will not be able to get me”.

He emphasized that the State government will not allow its name to be tarnished because the State had since keyed into President Buhari’s fight against corruption.

“Remember that we will not just allow this to lie low because Mr. President prides himself on fighting corruption. And EFCC is one of the agencies that is being used to fight corruption.

“As a person, I came into this office with my integrity high. And I will leave this office with a higher integrity and all of my names that are ringing bells everywhere across the world today will know that actually I earned these beautiful names, not because of stealing. I will never touch one kobo of Kogi state, I will never and I will never allow any of my officials to do that.

“Today, Kogi state is among the first that has published all of our accounts online. And all of these spendings have been put out there for the whole world to see from bank accounts, to bank statements of accounts, to payroll, and all of the documents are all out there. That is transparency. I think I challenge Nigerians to challenge all of those governors to publish that same particular bailout form utilization. And then you’ll be able to join me whichever way,” he said.

On the calls being made on him to contest for President in 2023, the Governor said he will respond at the appropriate time.

“For 2023, I still say it is in the hands of God Almighty. Nigerians, men, women, youth are all yearning that I should contest for 2023. There is still time to give an appropriate answer when the time comes. And I believe that when the time comes, we are going to give a very wonderful response that will satisfy Nigerians,” he said.
