Senate Deputy Majority Leader Calls for Tighter Border Security

0

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) , Senator Lola Ashiru has called on governments at all levels to strengthen border security through the promotion of shared prosperity among border communities.

Ashiru representing Kwara South Senatorial District at the National Assembly made the call when members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council, paid him a courtesy visit.

He stressed that effective management of border communities would significantly reduce criminal activities.

The Senate Deputy Majority Leader noted that properly secured and economically empowered border areas would serve as a strong deterrent to crime.

“I feel our border links with neighbouring communities must be well managed. The first and most important step is to spread prosperity across these areas.

“Prosperity has a lot of influence on people’s ability to resist aggression, whether verbal or physical. Communities like Eruku and Koro are very similar. Eruku borders Kogi State, while Erinle here borders Osun State,” Ashiru explained.

He added that special attention must be given to border and peripheral settlements, describing them as the first line of defence against external threats.

“We should give adequate attention to these peripheral settlements because before internal aggression can occur, there must be collaboration from within. When people are satisfied with the system, the likelihood of supporting criminal activities or external aggressors becomes very low,” he said.

According to him, states sharing boundaries must adopt a coordinated approach by investing in the welfare and development of their border communities.

“Niger State should protect its territory by spreading prosperity, Kwara State should do the same, and Kogi State should also ensure prosperity along the Eruku and Koro axis. If we adopt this approach, issues of killings and insecurity will be greatly curtailed,” he stated.

Ashiru also commended the people of Woro for their resilience and solidarity, offering prayers for the repose of the souls of those killed in Woro and Kaiama.

“We must not forget that countless people have been murdered. And I appreciate the efforts of the Federal Government for taking several steps to safeguard lives of the people,” he said.

He further called for a stronger developmental approach by governments, particularly at the state level, to address insecurity and promote sustainable peace across Nigeria.

HYPREP Establishes Remediation Project for Nigerian University

0

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing environmental research and human capacity development with plans to open its facilities and remediation project sites to students of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET), Ogoni.

Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, disclosed this at the maiden matriculation ceremony of FUET, Koroma/Saakpenwa, in Tai Local Government Area of Ogoni, Rivers State, describing the initiative as a strategic step toward nurturing innovation in environmental science and technology.

According to Professor Zabbey, the collaboration aligns squarely with HYPREP’s mandate to build capacity in environmental management while driving cutting-edge research in remediation, restoration, and sustainable development.

He lauded President Bola Tinubu for establishing FUET at a critical period in global history commonly referred to as the Anthropocene – an era marked by significant and lasting human impact on Earth’s ecosystems.

“I thank Mr. President for establishing this very important university at a time when the world is grappling with profound environmental challenges.

“HYPREP’s responsibility is the remediation of impacted lands and wetlands, and the restoration of mangroves. A key part of that responsibility is capacity building, and this aligns perfectly with the vision of this university.” Zabbey said.

The HYPREP Boss highlighted the ongoing construction of the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration (CEER) in Ogoni as a major milestone that will redefine environmental research in the region and beyond.

He explained that CEER will serve as an international hub for environmental research for development, comprising two faculties: a Faculty of Research and Development, envisioned as a postgraduate centre for innovative research in environmental remediation and management; and a Faculty of Vocational Studies, designed to strengthen practical and technical competencies.

“What this means is that we are already laying the foundation for innovative postgraduate research for this university. With both the Centre and the University located in Ogoni, we will work very closely,” he noted.

Beyond infrastructure, Professor Zabbey assured FUET students of hands-on training opportunities, revealing that HYPREP will open its remediation sites, mangrove restoration projects, and research facilities to students as part of its structured internship programme.

“Students of this University will have the opportunity to intern with HYPREP and to use our remediation sites for research for development. This is about building human capacity in the region and linking theory with real-world practice,” he said.

Professor Zabbey congratulated FUET on its successful take-off and offered to voluntarily teach students, further strengthening the bridge between academic learning and practical environmental restoration.

The partnership is expected to position FUET as a hub for applied environmental research while equipping students with practical skills to address Nigeria’s pressing ecological challenges.

Ganduje Commends FCT Minister on Kano Mega Empowerment Drive

Former First Lady of Kano State, Prof. Hafsat Abdullahi Ganduje, has lauded the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, for launching what she described as a far-reaching and grassroots-focused empowerment programme aimed at lifting women and vulnerable citizens out of poverty.

Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the unveiling of the Kano Mega Empowerment Programme, Prof. Ganduje said the initiative represents practical and sustainable intervention designed to address pressing economic challenges at the community level.

She noted that the programme reflects the core values of the All Progressives Congress (APC), adding that it demonstrates people-oriented leadership committed to strengthening families and promoting social stability.

The programme exemplifies true empowerment that is people-focused and designed to combat poverty, strengthen families and promote social stability,” she said.

She expressed particular satisfaction that the empowerment initiative targeted APC women leaders alongside other vulnerable groups, noting that the move would not only boost livelihoods but also strengthen grassroots political participation.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, commended Dr. Mahmoud for prioritising human capital development, describing the programme as aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s development agenda.

She urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the items distributed to achieve self-reliance and support their families.

Earlier, the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud said the programme was aimed at promoting self-reliance and restoring dignity to families struggling with economic hardship.

Women are the backbone of our homes, communities and even our political structures. When you empower a woman, you empower a nation,” she said.

She explained that the intervention aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, especially in the areas of women inclusion, youth empowerment and social welfare.

On behalf of the beneficiaries, Kano APC Women Leader, Hajiya Fatima Dala, expressed gratitude to the minister. She praised the transparency of the selection process.

We have had ministers from Kano State, but we have never witnessed this kind of empowerment programme in the history of the state,” she said.

She added that the minister had shown genuine concern for women and vulnerable groups by ensuring that only deserving beneficiaries received support. Dala also called on other political leaders to emulate the initiative, noting the crucial role women play in electoral success.

Items distributed under the programme included cars, motorcycles, tricycles, wheelchairs, sewing machines, grinding machines, spaghetti-making machines, fertilisers, bags of rice, and financial grants.

The Kano Mega Empowerment Programme is expected to boost small-scale enterprises and enhance economic inclusion across communities in the state.

House Promises Adequate Budgetary Allocations to Specialty Health Institutions

0

The House of Representatives has promised fair, realistic, and adequate budgetary allocations to specialty health institutions across Nigeria.

The chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Specialty Healthcare, Mr. Alex Egbona gave the assurance at the 2026 budget defence session of the committee with institutions under its purview in Abuja.

He said that the Committee on Specialty Healthcare is constitutionally and legislatively mandated to provide oversight over all specialised hospitals and health institutions in Nigeria. These include Orthopaedic Hospitals, Psychiatric Hospitals, Obstetric Fistula Centres, Eye and Ear Hospitals, Oral and Dental Health Institutions, Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Blood Transfusion Services and Laboratory Science Technology.

These institutions occupy a critical position in Nigeria’s healthcare system. They provide specialised and referral services, manage complex medical conditions, and serve some of the most vulnerable segments of our population. Without their effective functioning, the healthcare system cannot deliver optimal outcomes.

However, it is evident that many of these specialised hospitals and institutions continue to operate under severe funding constraints. Annual budgetary provisions are often low and, in many cases, inadequate to address infrastructure deficits, manpower needs, equipment gaps, and expanding service demands. This reality directly affects service delivery and patient outcomes”. Mr Egboma said.

He noted that the purpose of the budget defence is therefore twofold: first, for institutions to defend their 2026 budget proposals; and second, to account for the implementation of the 2025 Appropriations Act, highlighting achievements, challenges, and gaps.

The Committee is particularly interested in understanding how released funds (or lack of releases) have been utilized or affected performance; and how additional resources or adequate funding can translate into improved healthcare delivery in Nigeria“.he said.

He also assured the institutions that the Committee is committed as usual to ensuring that specialised healthcare institutions receive fair, realistic, and adequate budgetary allocations.

We will continue to engage the relevant authorities and the Committee on Appropriations to advocate for improved funding, guided by transparency, accountability, and national health priorities” he said.

The Chairman urged all institutions to make concise, factual, and evidence-based presentations to enable the Committee to carry out its responsibilities effectively.

Mental Health Act

In his presentation, the Provost and Medical Director of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Professor Afis Agboola, pointed out that Nigeria’s failure to implement the Mental Health Act is scaring away foreign donors from partnering with the country’s health sector.

He revealed that the hospital has spent close to N1 billion from its internally generated revenue to care for abandoned mental health patients, describing the development as unsustainable.

According to him, although the Mental Health Act was passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari, it has remained largely unimplemented for more than two years after its enactment.

The issue of patient abandonment is a major challenge. Unfortunately, despite having a Mental Health Act that clearly spells out the responsibilities of the federal, state, and local governments, there has been no execution of the law to date,” he said.

Professor Agboola explained that repeated engagements with the Federal Ministry of Health on the matter have yielded little progress, with funding constraints often cited as the main reason for the delay.

He stressed that the absence of a properly established Department of Mental Health within the Ministry has limited Nigeria’s ability to access international funding, as most foreign donor agencies insist on engaging with clearly defined statutory institutions.

There are international partners, including agencies in the United States, that are ready to support Nigeria’s mental health sector. However, they keep asking whether we have a functional mental health agency or department. Without such a structure, they cannot relate to us or release funds,” he noted.

He added that several other donor organisations are also willing to assist in alleviating the suffering of mental health patients in Nigeria, but the lack of a designated agency or department continues to frustrate such partnerships.

The medical director, therefore, appealed to the House Committee to prevail on the Federal Ministry of Health to fully implement the Mental Health Act, particularly the provision for the creation of a Department of Mental Health.

This is not optional; it is the law. Failure to implement it is to the detriment of mental health patients across the country,” he said
