President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sadness over the death of former Speaker of the House of Representatives in the Third Republic, Right Honourable Agunwa Anaekwe, describing him as an eminent lawmaker and courageous democrat who stood firm in defence of the nation’s democracy.
In a condolence message, President Tinubu commiserated with the family of the late statesman, as well as the government and people of Anambra State, over the loss.
He noted that Nigeria has lost a disciplined leader who played a pivotal role in the country’s democratic journey.
The President said Chief Anaekwe, who died at the age of 69, will be remembered in history for opposing military dictatorship and the truncation of democratic governance during one of Nigeria’s most turbulent political eras.
He recalled their shared experience in the National Assembly of the Third Republic, praising the former Speaker’s courage and sacrifices at a time when democratic ideals were under attack.
“Chief Anaekwe was a bold, courageous, and disciplined leader. He provided the needed leadership in parliament during utter chaos and rudderlessness. He was a true democrat and a well-versed parliamentarian,” President Tinubu stated.
The President also highlighted the deceased’s continued contributions to nation-building even after the return of democracy in 1999.
He noted Chief Anaekwe’s role in co-founding the Action Congress (AC) in Anambra in 2006 and serving as its first interim chairman, as well as his later contributions as a member of the National Caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
President Tinubu added that Anaekwe’s diligence, patriotism, and love for the country would remain an inspiration to legislators and public office holders across generations.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the former Speaker’s soul and asked God to grant his family the strength to bear the painful loss.
Chief Anaekwe served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1992 to 1993 during the Third Republic.
