0

Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel said, the state lack nurses and midwives, which explains his administration decision to upgrade the General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene to train them.

He disclosed this at the burial of the retired Assistant Director, Mercy Umanah.

“As a government, we have made tremendous investments in the health sector by upgrading some hospitals. We are going to do more,” he said.

“We want to complete the general hospital at Ikot Ekpene because we want to train nurses and midwives at Ikot Ekpene, because we are beginning to lack nurses and midwives .

“We are going to train more nurses and midwives as soon as we complete the project. What delayed us is the port congestion.

“Some of our containers are at the Port for Ikot Ekpene hospital,” Emmanuel said.

The governor noted that the delay in completing the hospital was due to the congestion at the port, as the government had imported several containers of medical equipment for the hospitals in the state.

He also announced that the Mercy Hospital, Abak, where the deceased served, would be upgraded to a referral hospital in a bid to immortalized her name.

The governor called for collective responsibility to tackle the many problems confronting the nation and build an egalitarian society as development should not be left government alone.

He expressed the hope that God will turn things around for the country and urged Nigerians to have faith in the leadership.

“In consonance with the resolution reached by the Confederation of African Athletics/World Athletics intervention team on the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), the caretaker committee announced for the Athletics Federation of Nigerian is rested and will not be inaugurated.”

“Elections into the board of the federation will follow the road map adopted at the intervention meeting in Abuja last month upon its adoption by World Athletics,” the statement added.

Australia defends decision to sanction citizens from COVID-19 hit in India

0

Australia defends its decision to sanction its own citizens entering the country within two weeks of being in COVID-19 hit in India.

Health Minister, Greg Hunt said on Monday, in a news briefing that India coronavirus surge on Australia’s health system serve as reasons to pause travel until May 15.

Australia’s quarantine hotels have seen a 1,500% spike in COVID-19 cases from India since March, raising questions about pre-departure testing in India and leading to this agonizing decision.

“The strong, clear view is that there has been no doubt in any of the Commonwealth advice about this measure or other measures,” he said.

Australia, which has largely contained the novel coronavirus, closed its borders to non-citizens in March 2020.

Returning residents and citizens must undergo a mandatory two-week hotel quarantine at their own expense.

Australia has seen 22,245 cases of community transmission and 910 deaths through the pandemic.

Roughly a quarter of the 35,000 Australians stranded overseas are in India, which reported close to 400,000 cases on Friday and more than 200,000 total deaths.

Australia clocked zero cases of community transmission on Monday.

Western Australia reported three cases over the weekend after a quarantine hotel security guard and two house-mates tested positive for COVID-19.

The country’s vaccination program has moved slowly, administering just over 2 million doses so far, well short of initial government forecasts of 4 million by the end of March.

According to projections by the Australian Broadcasting Corp, Australia’s adult population will likely be fully vaccinated by August 2023.

The government has cited a global COVID-19 vaccine shortage and health concerns around the AstraZeneca shot, on which Australia’s immunization program was based.

Australia has imposed age restrictions on the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Nigerian teachers have become globally recognised – TRCN Registrar

Nigerian Teachers are now being sought after globally.

The Registrar of Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria, Prof Josiah Ajiboye, made this known during a one-day Capacity Training Workshop for Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria (ECAN).

Prof Registrar, also said that since the beginning of the Year 2021, he has signed about 100 letters of Professional for qualified Nigerian teachers who secured teaching jobs in Canada an other parts of the world.

He stated that teachers trained in Nigeria are becoming highly competitive ,he added that government at all levels should do it best to attract them to stay back home.

Prof. Ajiboye who emphasised that the approvals given by President Muhammadu Buhari on repositioning teaching profession in the country, call for adherence by the State government as well saying, States are the largest employers of the teachers.

According to him, “Mr President has started with that in 2020,if we can be able to follow through this , I believe very strongly that the trend of our teachers leaving the country will reduce”

“At the Federal Ministry of Education level, the circular has gone out on 65years of teachers retirement,Federal teachers will benefit from this beginning from January 2021, some of the approval will wait till 2022 but we will continue with the implementation”

He gave the assurance that with the approvals given by the President and with its full implementation across the country with the coperation of states, more qualified teachers will be retained in the system.

We dont want our qualified teachers to leave Nigeria but for those that are leaving ,they are being rated at par with their colleagues abroad

Also speaking at the event, Dr Abimbola Okunola, Assistant Director in the council, said that the teaching profession has been rated more critical than any other profession in the world, hence the need to attract the best brains for the practice of teaching in the country.

In the honourable court of France, only teachers are allowed to sit on the chair. In Japan, the police force has to take special permission from the government to arrest a teacher for any reason”

“In Korea, only teachers enjoy the privilege of a minister and in Germany, teachers are among the highest paid civil servants.

“In the beginning, teaching was so glorious and so noble that in every community teachers were considered next to kings in importance and development of the society,” he said.

He, therefore, emphasised the need for professionalism as the secret behind the success or collapse of any vocation, hence the need to critically take professionalism seriously in the teaching profession.

On his part, Dr Magaji Waziri, Assistant Director, Department of Planning, Research and Statistics in TRCN, said that the country has been flooded with unqualified manpower which had lowered the quality of teachers in the system.

Waziri maintained that there was therefore the need to set standards at all levels while ensuring quality teaching and learning through monitoring and supervision of teacher education programmes.

Also speaking at the event, Chuks Ukwuatu, Chairman of ECAN, called on journalists to ensure adequate reportage of education stories to foster development in other sectors.

Ukwuatu commended TRCN for its role in ensuring excellence in the education professionalism of teachers as well as maintenance of teachers’ quality.

He also appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to renew the appointment of TRCN boss to ensure continuity in transforming the nation’s teaching profession.

India’s COVID cases near 20 million

India reported more than 300,000 new coronavirus infections for a 12th straight day on Monday to take its overall number of cases to almost 20 million, as scientists predicted a peak in the pandemic in the coming days.

With 368,147 new cases over the past 24 hours, India’s total infections stand at 19.93 million, while total fatalities rose by 3,417 to 218,959, according to health ministry data.

Medical experts say actual numbers across the country of 1.35 billion may be five to 10 times higher than the official tally.

The health ministry offered a glimmer of hope, reporting that positive cases relative to the number of tests conducted fell on Monday for the first time since at least April 15.

India’s coronavirus cases may peak between May 3-5, according to a mathematical model from a team of scientists advising the government, a few days earlier than a previous estimate as the virus has spread faster than expected.

Hospitals have filled to capacity, medical oxygen supplies have run short and morgues and crematoriums have been swamped as the country deals with the surge in cases.

At least 11 states and union territories have imposed some form of restrictions on movement to try and stem infections, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is reluctant to announce a national lockdown, concerned about the economic impact.

The spike in infections is India’s biggest crisis since Modi took office in 2014. Modi has been criticised for not taking steps earlier to curb the spread and for letting millions of largely unmasked people attend religious festivals and crowded political rallies in five states during March and April.

A forum of scientific advisers set up by the government warned Indian officials in early March of a new and more contagious variant of the coronavirus taking hold in the country, five scientists who are part of the forum told Reuters.

Despite the warning, four of the scientists said the federal government did not seek to impose major restrictions to stop the spread of the virus.

It remains to be seen how his handling of the crisis might affect Modi or his party politically. The next general election is due in 2024. Modi’s party was defeated in India’s West Bengal state in results declared on Sunday, although it won in the neighbouring state of Assam.

Leaders of 13 opposition parties signed a letter on Sunday urging Modi to immediately launch free national vaccination and to prioritise oxygen supply to hospitals and health centres.

Several states have postponed widening a vaccination drive for adults that was to start on Saturday due to a lack of vaccines. Despite being the world’s biggest producer of vaccines, India does not have enough for itself. Only about 9% of the population has had a dose.

India has struggled to increase capacity beyond 80 million doses a month due to lack of raw materials and a fire at the Serum Institute, which makes the AstraZeneca vaccine.

International aid has been pouring into India in response to the crisis.

Britain will send another 1,000 ventilators to India, the government said on Sunday. Prime ministers Boris Johnson and Modi are scheduled to talk on Tuesday.

The Indian COVID-19 variant has now reached at least 17 countries including Britain, Switzerland and Iran, leading several governments to close their borders to people travelling from India.

At least 26 killed in Bangladesh boat crash

At least 26 people have been killed after a speedboat packed with passengers collided with a vessel transporting sand in Bangladesh.

Police said on Monday that the speedboat carrying about 36 passengers from the town of Mawa slammed into the other vessel on the Padma River near the rural town of Shibchar.

“We have so far recovered 26 bodies, including a woman. We have also rescued five injured people, including three children,” police official Amir Hossain said.

Hossain said the bow of the passenger boat was destroyed when the speedboat smashed into the side of the transport vessel and quickly sank.

The speedboat was carrying passengers in violation of government restrictions during a nationwide coronavirus lockdown, said Rahima Khatun, a top government official in the area.

The body of a victim is carried after a speedboat overturned Monday morning after hitting a cargo boat in River Padma at the Kanthalbari ferry terminal in Madaripur, central Bangladesh.

Divers and local people retrieved 26 bodies from the water and were searching for those still missing.

Witness Abdur Rahman said there was a loud noise when the boats collided and the vessels then overturned.

“When we rushed to the spot, we found the speedboat torn into two pieces. Hundreds of villagers immediately started conducting rescue work before they were joined by police and the fire brigade,” he said.

Bangladesh is building the country’s largest road and railway bridge near the spot where the accident happened, and police said officers were immediately at the scene.

Construction work has slowed ferry transport on the river, prompting many to make the journey on the less-safe speedboats, which take only about 15 minutes to make the crossing in contrast to up to two hours on ferries.

Khatun said the driver of the speedboat would be investigated as he appeared to have hit the transport vessel, which was moo0red at the time.

Maritime accidents are common in Bangladesh, a delta nation crisscrossed by hundreds of rivers.

Authorities blame poor maintenance, lax safety standards at shipyards, and overcrowding for many of the accidents.

Vessels transporting sand sit low in the water and can be hard to see in choppy conditions, particularly when light is poor.

In early April, more than 30 people died when a ferry packed with 50 passengers hurrying home from the central city of Narayanganj ahead of the impending coronavirus lockdown collided with a larger cargo vessel.

In June last year, a ferry sank in the capital Dhaka after it was hit from behind by another ferry, killing at least 32 people.

In February 2015, at least 78 people died when an overcrowded ship collided with a cargo ship.
