APC hails Nigerian workers

0

Nigeria’s governing party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has hailed Nigerian workers for their role as key drivers of President Muhammadu Buhari’s social and economic plans for the country.

In a message to mark the International Workers Day signed by the APC National Secretary, Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Senator John Akpanudoedehe, the APC also commended the Labour Unions.

“On the occasion of the 2021 International Workers Day celebration, the All Progressives Congress (APC) hail Nigerian workers as key drivers of the socio-economic policies and infrastructural revolution of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

“We also greet labour and trade unions who continue to shun unpatriotic influences while advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers.

“From the administration’s several social investment programmes targeted at citizens living on the margin to the Economic Sustainability Plan which fast-tracked the country’s recovery from recession and cushioned the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigerian workers are key partners and are playing important roles in ensuring the administration’s successful implementation of these programmes and many more.

“In line with our election promises to Nigerian workers, the President Buhari administration successfully implemented the improved minimum wage and has embarked on a mass housing programme benefitting thousands. This government’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers is tested and proven. We will do more,” the statement read.

The APC reiterated its commitment to continue protecting the lives and properties of every Nigerian and appealed to the citizens to exercise patience with its administration.

COVID-19: Nigeria to ban travellers from India, Turkey, Brazil

The Nigerian government is set to ban travellers coming from India, Brazil and Turkey because of concerns about the rampant spread of coronavirus in those countries, a presidential committee said on Sunday.

Non-Nigerian passport holders and non-residents who visited Brazil, India or Turkey within Fourteen (14) days preceding travel to Nigeria, shall be denied entry into Nigeria,” Boss Mustapha, chairman of the presidential steering committee on COVID-19, said in a statement.

The ban will take effect from May 4, the statement said.

Nigeria announced 43 confirmed new coronavirus cases on Saturday, bringing its total to 165,153, with 2,063 deaths.

Indian hospitals, morgues and crematoriums have been overwhelmed as the country has reported more than 300,000 daily cases for more than 10 days straight. Many families have been left on their own to find medicines and oxygen.

In Brazil, new coronavirus cases have fallen off a late-March peak, but remain high by historical standards. Total deaths in the country are second only to the United States.

Turkey imposed a nationwide “full lockdown” on Thursday, lasting until May 17, to curb a surge in coronavirus infections and deaths, with the world’s fourth highest number of cases and the worst on a per-capita basis among major nations.

Health Minister Adham Baba said on Sunday, days after imposing a ban on flights from India.

The variant, named B.1.617, was detected in an Indian national screened at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, he said.

The World Health Organisation has described it as a “variant of interest”, suggesting it may have mutations that would make the virus more transmissible, cause more severe disease or evade vaccine immunity.

We advise the public to remain calm… All public health efforts will continue in order to break the chain of infection and ensure public safety,” Adham said.

Malaysia on Wednesday banned flights to and from India and prohibited travellers from any Indian destination from entering the country to prevent the spread of the new variant.

Somali President reopens talks to hold elections

Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo on Saturday reopened talks to hold elections as soon as possible, a move welcomed by the opposition and raising the spectre of further deadly violence.

In a short speech to MPs, broadcast live on television, the president called for a negotiated solution to the ongoing political crisis, abandoning the two-year extension of his presidential term adopted on 12 April.

He also designated his Prime Minister as responsible for the organisation of the elections, thus acceding to one of the main demands of the opposition to break the deadlock.

We have decided to seek a solution through negotiations and avoid provoking violence for the benefit of those who play with the blood of the people,” said the president, known as Farmajo.

Somalia, a country weakened by decades of civil war and an insurgency by radical Islamists affiliated with al-Qaeda, is currently experiencing one of its worst political crises in recent years.

Tensions have risen since the president’s term expired on 8 February without elections being held, and on 12 April, a two-year extension of the presidential term triggered the fury of the opposition.

The extension of the presidential term on 12 April triggered the fury of the opposition, to the point of degenerating into armed clashes last Sunday in Mogadishu, between government forces and pro-opposition, leaving three dead.

On Saturday, the president placed himself within the framework of an agreement reached on 17 September between the federal government and the five semi-autonomous states of the country, as requested by his opponents and several partner countries.

The agreement calls for elections to be held under an indirect system, similar to the one adopted in 2017, where special delegates chosen by multiple clan leaders elect parliamentarians, who then vote for the president.

“I appeal to all of you (…) to return to the inclusive agreement” adopted in September, he added.

“I want to make it clear that Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble will be in charge of the preparation, conduct and security of the election,” he added.

The speech was then adopted unanimously by the 140 MPs present.

In the evening, the Prime Minister hailed before the press “a historic day” and thanked President Farmajo for his sense of “compromise”.

“We are determined to hold free, fair and inclusive elections without anyone being disenfranchised,” he said, promising to bring the stakeholders together “very soon”.

In a speech to the nation on Tuesday night, the president had already backed down and called for “urgent discussions” with Somali political actors to organise elections.

In a statement, the coalition of opposition presidential candidates against Farmajo welcomed Saturday’s developments in parliament.

“I applaud the decision of parliament to return to the implementation of the 17 September agreement. This is a step forward and whoever was involved in this decision should be congratulated for it,” said former president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, chairman of the coalition.

For its part, the Turkish Foreign Ministry, a key partner of the Somali government, welcomed the MPs’ decision in a statement, hoping that it would allow the resumption of political dialogue “without delay”.

The election of President Farmajo in 2017 had raised hopes among the population, who saw in him a leader concerned with fighting corruption and determined to combat the Shebab.

While he adopted a strong nationalist stance during his term in office, to the point of breaking off diplomatic relations with Kenya and thus gaining sympathy from part of the population, the president also made many enemies.

A proponent of a strong centralised state, he has tried to influence several elections in the country’s semi-autonomous states to place his allies. The extension of his mandate voted by the parliament was perceived by many as an attempt to maintain his power.

On the other hand, the shebab have not been particularly worried during his first term, despite the martial declarations made after he came to power.

And the government in Mogadishu still controls only a small portion of the country’s territory, with the crucial help of some 20,000 troops of the African Union force in the country (Amisom).

Nigerian Government to expand N-Power programme to 1million beneficiaries

The Federal Government says it will expand the N-Power programme from the present 500,000 beneficiaries to one million.

President Muhammadu Buhari said this in a message to commemorate the 2021 Workers’ Day celebration on Saturday in Abuja.

The  2021 Workers’ Day theme is ”COVID-19, Social and Economic Crises: Challenges for Decent Work, Social Protection and Peoples Welfare”.

Buhari said that the expansion of the N-Power programme would ensure job creation and poverty alleviation through programme such as Safety Net Programmes to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

”We also have put in place some socio-economic policies, which also include Conditional Cash Transfer for the vulnerable poor from 2.6 million households (13 million persons) to 7.6 million households (about 32 million persons).

”COVID-19 Rapid Response Register (RRR) for urban Poor, which now has 4.8 million households (20 million persons) which also include urban poor/working class.

”Also, through the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, there is the Entrepreneur Support Programme and, this even includes the vulnerable workers amongst the urban poor.

”We also have the Artisan Support Fund, Payroll Support Fund for small scale businesses, Business Formalisation aimed at encouraging micro, small and medium enterprises by offering free registration for upcoming businesses by the Corporate Affairs Commission.

”There is also Guaranteed Off-take Stimulus Scheme for Small Medium Enterprises for producers of hygienic products and packaged food to encourage entrepreneurship and industries, “he said.

He, however, added that the National Youth Investment Fund (NYIF) for young entrepreneurs had N75 billion for three years, all aimed at support for the labour force.

He also noted that in securing decent jobs, government was inadvertently promoting social protection and people’s welfare.

We also know that social protection gives you peace of mind and hope for a better future.

“It also ensures access to health care and income security for all and provides for you and your family when sick, unemployed, injured, pregnant or too old to work,” he said.

He noted that a happy workforce could be created by employers incorporating the decent work agenda in job creation and retention in their workplace guiding policies.

As we all know, decent work sums up the aspirations of people in their working lives.

”It involves opportunities for work that is productive and delivers a fair income, security in the workplace and social protection for families, better prospects for personal development and social integration.

”It also ensure freedom for people to express their concerns, organise and participate in the decisions that affect their lives and equality of opportunity and treatment for all women and men,” he said.

He noted that decent jobs in our workplaces in a nutshell, therefore, reflect all the goodness in labour administration.

Buhari, therefore, said fair labour practices must be the norm in the world of work.

”So, the theme for the May Day celebration is relevant and also reflects practical and contemporary issues of our society and not just in Nigeria but globally,” he said.

Kano Governor increases retirement age for Teachers

0

Kano state Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has increased the length of service for teachers in the state from 35 years to 40 years

This has moved retirement age from 60 years to 65 years, for all categories of teachers in the state.

Ganduje disclosed this during the Nigeria Labour  Congress (NLC) Award Night, as part of activities marking this year’s workers’ day celebration, held at the Open Theatre, Government House, Kano, on Saturday, assuring that all the policies would be sustained.

“The length of service for our teachers has been 35 years, I am glad to inform this gathering that, we have now increased the duration to 40 years “.

“You are all aware that federal government has made a pronouncement by increasing the retirement age and the length of service of teachers serving under federal government. So we don’t want teachers in Kano state to be left behind,” emphasized Ganduje.

He said the gesture was to motivate and promote teachers commitment  to their duties.

He made it categorically clear that, all teachers from primary to secondary schools up to tertiary institutions, would benefit from the new development, adding that, “…this is an innovation that we cherish and it will be sustained.”

“Our teachers are our fathers. They are the backbone of sustainable development. Because without education there is no development. Then if we are to sustain our system of education, then their welfare is absolutely necessary.”

“You could recall some two or three years back, we promoted our teachers and paid them increased salary for their promotion. Which affected the payment of our monthly salaries with over N500m. That is unprecedented.”said Ganduje.

The Chairman of the Kano State Branch of NLC, Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir, commended the state governor but like Oliver Twist presented more request to the state government.

“Review for retirement age for civil servants in the state and local governments services. Like what was done to teachers, in their own category. This action will equally reduce the massive increase or pensioners with another 5 years. Thereby giving an opportunity for State Pension Fund to offset its outstanding liabilities.”

No plans by APC Reps to dump party – Majority leader

0

Mr Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, the Majority leader in the House of Representatives, says there are no plans by any of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Representatives to leave the party for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Ado-Doguwa, member representing Tudun Wada/Doguwa constituency in Kano State, stated this in a statement issued to newsmen in Kano.

“My attention has been drawn to a spurious and specious claim by Ndudi Elumelu, the Minority leader, that some imaginary members of the ruling party have met with him to discuss their desire to join the sinking opposition party.

“My reaction was to ignore this delusion, but because of the consideration for unsuspecting and innocent members of our great party and constituents who we represent at the House of Representatives, we owe them this clarification.

“It is a fact that there was an executive session of the House, which was indeed convened by the leadership for the sole purpose of further discussions about the way out of the insecurity situation in the country.

“It must be noted that Members across the partisan divide were too busy and occupied with the sense of duty and obligation to our nation’s wellbeing to have time for parochial and narrow prism thoughts of partisan politics and membership recruitment.

“It, therefore, remains a curious slant that Elumelu in the heat of the current situation does not have the presence of mind to face squarely the matter that affects every Nigerian rather he is opting to embark on a voyage of political philandering of looking for new members for an opposition party that is like a sinking ship beyond salvage.

“It clearly shows the kind of opposition we have. If the minority leader will want to use the meeting of their party to announce a non-existent news of members of the ruling party trying to decamp to a party in dire straits bereft of solutions.

“I wish to affirm without any doubt that the infantile claim of the minority leader that some members of the APC in the House of Representatives are thinking of joining the PDP remains a figment of his imagination and that of his co-travellers on that journey.

“With all emphasis, I say that members of the APC are focused, too united, determined and fully committed to working with President Muhammadu Buhari and standing in one accord with all Nigerians at this time to find a lasting solution to the challenge of insecurity that does not recognise partisan tendencies.

“We believe that working together with the leadership of the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, who had pushed concrete legislative support actions to stem the tide of insecurity challenge,” he said.

According to Ado-Doguwa, the most recent of such interventions of the Speaker was the setting up of a non-partisan broad spectrum special ad-hoc committee on security.

He added that the committee is currently working out the modalities to hold a week-long crucial security Summit, where statesmen, security chiefs, and other relevant stakeholders will converge to proffer solutions to the rather lingering security problems bedevilling our country.

“Without doubts, we shall be counted as an integral and veritable partner and component that worked to defeat this national challenge, and when we do, which will be soon, it with be all reasonable hands on deck.

“This is our sacred commitment as Members of the APC in the 9th House of Representatives beyond the lousy tendencies of a sinking opposition party,” he said.

A former Governor of Ekiti State, Engr. Olusegun Oni has joined the race for the 2022 governorship election in the state on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Oni, who governed Ekiti State between May 29, 2007, and October 15, 2010, said his intention to re-contest for the coveted seat was not targeted at corrupt enrichment of himself, family and political cronies.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain spoke in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday while unveiling members of his campaign team that would power his governorship ambition in 2022.

A former member of the House of Representatives, representing Efon/Ijero/Ekiti West, Hon Yemi Arokodare, was appointed as the Director-General of the campaign team.

Oni while addressing his supporters at his campaign office in Adebayo area of Ado-Ekiti Metropolis where the event was held, gave assurances that his mission is to unite the party and wipe out divisive tendencies among the contending forces, for the PDP to emerge victorious in the poll.

“The PDP Family is an inclusive political community with a level-playing ground for all party members; we will leave no one behind because it is big enough to accommodate diverse interests, groups and everyone.

“This developmental journey is not about us, our friends or associates; it is about the people who have shown tremendous confidence in our ability to turn the state’s fortunes around and guarantee Ekiti a secured future.

“It is largely about deploying Ekiti resources to develop its people. This is not about personal enrichment or personalising governance for a few cronies.

“That the people are coming forward volunteering their cars for the PDP Family branding is a testament to who we are and a demonstration of pure love, confidence and trust in our commitment to make Ekiti State a better place for all.

“The campaign has not started, but the people are eager to create awareness and assure themselves that there is a viable alternative to the present situation in the State and will never take this for granted.

Oyo Labour Leaders Appeal for Legislative, Judicial Autonomy

0

Labour leaders in Oyo State have called on Governor Seyi Makinde to be the first among governors in the country to grant full financial autonomy to the legislative and judicial arms of government.

The labour leaders, including the State Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), Comrade Kayode Martins and the Trade Union Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Ogundiran, who said it would be a landmark accomplishment which would never be erased through generations to come, made the call in their separate remarks at the 2021 Workers’ Day Celebration which held at the Obafemi Awolowo (formerly Liberty) Stadium, Oke Ado area, Ibadan.

Comrade Martins appreciated the governor for his efforts at making life easier and better for the workers in the state, while also appealing that more serious attention should be given to insecurity and land grabbing issues, among others challenges facing the state.

He said: “We also plead that the governor and his team intensify their efforts on the lingering insecurity and kidnapping that seem to engulf the entire country. This will give confidence to all workers in all locations to go about their work without any fear whatsoever.”

“The NLC wants to also appeal to the government of His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, to please have a rethink on the planned demolition of the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) Staff quarters. We rather seek his kind consideration in renovating the existing quarters and building more that can accommodate more staffs so as to have smooth transmission of programmes,” Martins pleaded.

He appealed that the casual members of staff at BCOS that have spent up to five years and above should be employed into the stream, with their vast knowledge, saying it would be unfair for the management of BCOS to train and lose the trained staff to other media organisations.

Also speaking, the TUC Chairman, Comrade Ogundiran, urged all workers in the state to cooperate with the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration as way of mitigating the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on resource generation and utilisation.

In his remarks, Governor Seyi Makinde, who reiterated all the supports the administration is giving to the workforce in the state, urged the people to collaborate with security agencies to help address the menace of security challenges facing the state, saying security is one sector that all must remain interested in, to continue growing the economy.

Makinde noted: “If our neighbourhoods are not secure, we will not have an economy to drive. So, please work with us. Do not allow any individual or group to divide us: christians, muslims, indigenes, residents, men, women, youths, whatever you may profess, we are one.”

“We all want the same things. We want our lives to be better, so let us all work together. We also know that there are criminal elements who want to disrupt the peace. As good citizens, our war should be against them. So, if you see something, say something and let the security agencies take charge and do something,” the governor asserted.

The 2021 Workers’ Day, set aside by the United Nations to commemorate and recognise the achievements of the workers’ movement, has the theme: COVID-19 Pandemic, Social and Economic Crises: Challenges for Decent Jobs, Social Protection and People’s Welfare.
