COVID-19: WHO lists Moderna vaccine for emergency use

0

The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use on Friday.

WHO Assistant Director-General, Mariangela Simao said in a statement, it was important to have more vaccines available because of supply problems for other shots, including from India.

“The objective is to make medicines, vaccines and diagnostics available as rapidly as possible to address the emergency,” WHO said.

Moderna announced this week an expansion plan for its production network to boost its capacity to up to 3 billion doses in 2022.

According to WHO estimate, the drug is mRNA-based, it has an efficacy of 94.1 per cent.

The vaccine can be stored between 25oC and -15oC, but it can also be stored for up to 30 days at temperatures between 2°C and 8°C.

Pfizer and its German partner BionTech’s shot, also an mRNA vaccine like Moderna’s, was the first vaccine to get a WHO emergency use listing in the final hours of 2020.

Since then, the WHO has added vaccines from Astrazeneca-SK Bio, Serum Institute of India and Johnson & Johnson vaccines to the list.

Moderna shot is a prerequisite for it to be a part of COVAX, the program to disseminate shots to low-income countries.

It also allows countries to expedite their own regulatory approval to import and administer the COVID-19 vaccine.

APC cautions Mbaka against inflammatory statements

The  Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr Yekini Nabena has advised Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, against making statements that can destabilise Nigeria.

Nabena in a statement on Friday in Abuja threatened to report Fr Mbaka to the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church if he continued to cause disaffection for the Nigerian Government with his utterances.

The Priest is the Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, located in Enugu State.

Mbaka, who is seen as a celebrity by his numerous followers, is a force to be reckoned with in the religious circle in the Eastern region.

The cleric recently allegedly called on the National Assembly to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari if he failed to resign over rising insecurity in the country.

Mbaka, who was said to have made the call at a Church service, where he lamented the state of insecurity across the country, called on the presidency to address the numerous challenges facing the country.

The APC spokesperson said ”the man of God should have faced his spiritual calling rather than dabbling into politics, which he knew little or nothing about.”

He advised the cleric to deploy all his known spiritual means to support the government in addressing various challenges in the country.

Nabena, making reference to the book of Mark 4: 35-40 in the Holy Bible, where Jesus Christ calmed a raging storm, said Jesus did not blame anyone but prayed and calmed the storm.

He urged the cleric to emulate the Lord Jesus Christ, who he said, also obeyed and honoured a constituted authority by paying tax.

Nabena advised Mbaka to leave political messages for politicians, stressing that calling on President Buhari to either resign or be impeached because of the country`s current challenges was ungodly.

The Presidency also reacted to Mbaka’s call saying ,“Father Mbaka’s call for resignation of President Buhari should be disregarded” – Presidency

He said that his administration was conscious of the demands of the Organised Labour, saying they were being looked into and would be implemented as the state’s economic situation improves.
