Insecurity: Former President urges Nigerians to pray for Country

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has urged to pray for the nation to overcome the threatening security situation, assuring that the swinging of the pendulum will not make it fall off.

Obasanjo made the call while speaking at the 108th Annual Convention of the Nigerian Baptist Church, NBC, held at the Baptist International Conference Centre, KM 54 Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Assuring Nigerians to be optimistic and prayerful, the ex-President said; ”all hands must be on deck for the prosperity of the nation.”

Obasanjo stated: “On the situation we are in the country, I am an incurable optimist about a number of things particularly about Nigeria. Keep praying that the situation will only be threatening, but we won’t be overcome by it. May we continue to prosper.”

The convention with the theme: “Moving Forward, Finishing the Race with Joy” also saw Reverend Olasupo Ayokunle hand over the baton of leadership as President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention to Reverend Israel Akanji.

The ex President advised the Baptist Church members to work cooperatively with Reverend Akanji the same way they worked with Reverend Ayokunle, commending the outgoing Baptist President for his contributions to the progress and development of the church.

Also present at the convention were; Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State; Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State; Senator Ishaku Abbo, representing Adamawa North Senatorial District; representatives of the All African Council of Churches as well as World Council of Churches, Baptist World Alliance and other religious bodies.

Governor Makinde called on Nigerians to continue to pray for the nation’s leaders. He urged them to play their role by being wary of happenings around them and reporting to security agencies and authorities when they notice anything untoward.

The Governor praised the Baptist Convention for having an orderly and peaceful transition in its leadership, praying that such would also be recorded in the nation’s political landscape.

Congratulating him on his 10 years of excellent service to the Baptist Convention in Nigeria, Governor Makinde lauded Dr Ayokunle for his ability to speak truth to power and urged him to continue to render excellence service to the cause of Oyo State and Nigeria, at large.

He said: “After serving as the President of the NBC for 10 years, Dr Ayokunle has rendered excellent service to the Baptist Convention. Excellence is closely related to completeness and this is linked to that number, 10. Just as you have achieved excellence in service here and I can see that you are not tired, we want you to continue to be of service to our country and to our state.”

Also the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun urged Nigerians to reject violence and pursue peace, asking both leaders and followers to live with the fear of God for the situation of the nation to be better.

Governor Abiodun further advised the church ”to continue to seek God’s face for an end to divisive tendencies in the nation and for the nation to continue on the path of socio-economic development.”

He also praised Dr Olasupo Ayokunle for his dynamic leadership of Christian faithful, being a moral compass and shining example of the Christian fold.

Rwandan woman in court for genocide after deportation from US

0

A Rwandan woman accused of brutal crimes during the 1994 genocide in her home country appeared in a Kigali court on Wednesday after being deported from the United States earlier this month.
51-year-old Beatrice Munyenyezi, a mother of three, arrived in Kigali on April 17 after serving a 10-year prison sentence in the United States for lying about her involvement in the genocide, which allowed her to obtain citizenship.
Her initial appearance was brief and her pre-trial hearing was adjourned to May 5 to allow more time for the defence to prepare.
“I did not have enough time to prepare the case because it is not possible to see my client. It is only yesterday evening that they gave us 20 minutes together to discuss the case,” her lawyer Gatera Gashabana said shortly after the hearing.
Munyenyezi is facing seven charges of genocide crimes, such as murder, conspiracy to commit genocide, rape and extermination.
According to a 2015 report by the Boston Magazine, Munyenyezi lived quietly in a working class neighbourhood in New Hampshire with her three children until a federal agent began probing her past.
The spotlight landed on her as it became known that her husband and mother-in-law — a former minister — were on trial for genocide crimes. Both were later convicted.
Her husband, Arsene Shalom Ntahobali was sentenced in 2013 to 47 years in jail for his role as a leader of the Interahamwe militia that committed brutal atrocities against the Tutsi in 1994.
Investigations showed that Munyenyezi, nicknamed “The Commander”, oversaw a roadblock where she would identify Tutsi and have them killed, while encouraging Hutu extremists to rape the women, including in one case, a nun.
Some 800,000 people, mainly Tutsi were beaten, hacked or shot to death in the genocide that lasted for roughly 100 days, by Hutu forces.

Spotify owner Daniel Ek to present ‘very compelling offer’ to Kroenke family

Swedish billionaire Daniel Ek is expected to submit a £1.8 billion offer to buy Arsenal in the next few days; current owners the Kroenke’s insist they will not sell the Premier League club following criticism over European Super League proposals

Spotify owner Daniel Ek says he is prepared for a “long journey” with his bid to buy Arsenal and will present “a very compelling offer” to try and persuade the Kroenke family to sell up.

Swedish billionaire Ek, 38, who has enlisted the support of club legends Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, and Patrick Vieira, is expected to submit his first offer – in the region of £1.8 billion – in the next few days.

The Kroenke’s, whose ownership came under renewed opposition following the club’s participation in the failed European Super League last week, insist they “will not entertain any offer”.

Ek expects the Kroenke’s to reject his initial offer but is willing to be patient in what is likely to be a long process.

Spotify owner Daniel Ek

Speaking to CNBC, Ek said: “I have secured the funds for it and I want to bring what I think is a very compelling offer to the owners and I hope they hear me out.”

Ek, who used Twitter to express interest in a deal last Friday evening, says he is “very serious” with his takeover bid and wants to “engage the fans again”.

“I just see a tremendous opportunity to set a real vision for the club to bring it back to its glory,” he added.

He has already intimated he would be open to having fan representation on the Arsenal board if he succeeds in buying the club, including the possibility of giving supporters a ‘golden share’, which would provide veto power over key decisions.

“I just focus on the club, I focus on the fans and I focus on trying to bring the club back to glory,” added Ek, who was speaking after Spotify announced their first quarterly results on Wednesday.

“I am first and foremost a fan, that is the most important thing for me. I want the club to do better. That is my primary interest.”

Ek, who co-founded Spotify in 2006 and is worth an estimated £3.2bn, does not consider his approach to buy the club as personal and was careful not to criticize the current owners during his television appearance.

Stan Kroenke, who owns Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE), has been Arsenal’s owner since April 2011.

KSE also own NFL franchise Los Angeles Rams, NBA side Denver Nuggets, NHL outfit Colorado Avalanche and MLS side Colorado Rapids.

Arsenal director Josh Kroenke told a fans’ forum that his family would work harder to engage with fans more effectively in the future.

Mikel Arteta’s side – who are currently 10th, 12 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea – effectively need to win the Europa League if they are to play European football next season.

Smallholder Farmers Seek Government’s Timely Intervention For New Planting Season

Some smallholder farmers in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State are seeking government’s timely intervention to ensure food production for the 2021 planting season.

They stated this in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recently.

A smallholder farmer, Mrs Alimotu Sulaiman, from Iseyin Local Government Area (LGA) of Oyo State said for there to be food production in 2021, the government needed to provide support for farmers now.

She noted that those who had benefited from the various interventions and programmes of the government are not real farmers but politicians.

“We kept getting promises from those who pledged to support farmers but it amounted to nothing till the rainfall stopped and the planting season ended in 2020.

“We don’t want the same thing to happen in this planting season as there is still time to help the farmers now,” Sulaiman said.

Another Smallholder farmer in Saki East LGA, Mr Tade Ogundipe said whatever help and support the government wants to give to the farmers should be done now.

“After the end of April any support given to farmers is a waste and a total failure for the planting season.

“Timely intervention is what the farmers need to ensure continuous food production.

“Giving farmers seedlings,  fertilisers and so on when the rain has started is a waste, as these things are needed before the commencement of rain.

“Many people had  received such in the past after the rainfall had started, do nothing about the seedlings they received because they came at the wrong time and so they are  not useful for the planting season,” Ogundipe said.

Also, Mrs Musilatu Ashiru from Saki East LGA said “We know that this present administration has a lot of support to give to farmers and we are praying that we also would be beneficiary of the support programmes in any form it would take.

“That done would add to the notable feats achieved by the government for farmers and efforts at ensuring food sufficiency.”

NSIA implements restructuring of Presidential Fertilizer Initiative

The Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) says it has saved over $350 million from the erstwhile payments on subsidy and import substitution through the implementation of the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI).

Following notable successes and transformative impact of the PFI over the past four years, the presidency approved its restructuring, starting in the 2021 cycle with various modifications.

Under the modifications, the NSIA has been transitioned to an upstream player thereby limiting its involvement to importation, storage and the wholesale of raw materials to blenders.

The NSIA subsidiary, NAIC-NPK Limited, will be spun off to the Ministry of Finance Incorporated.

Under the new arrangement, blenders will no longer be paid blending fees by NAIC-NPK as they will recover their cost directly from selling the fertilizer to the market.

This will balance the incentives of the business and ensure the blenders build the right capacity to actively participate in the local supply sub-sector.

The blending plants are expected to provide bank guarantees to cover requisitioned raw materials demand that are appropriated for their respective production volumes.

As part of the new structure and in line with the presidential directive, the Federal Ministry of Finance Budget and National Planning and the Central Bank of Nigeria are expected to engage commercial banks to facilitate lines of concessionary credits to blending plants for the purchase of raw materials.

It is also expected that the CBN will ensure that the foreign exchange needed for the programme is provided as and when needed to cover some raw materials

The approval, which takes effect immediately, was communicated in a letter through the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President, which was issued in November of 2020.

Under the new arrangement, blenders will be responsible for bulk of the activities in the fertilizer production value chain such as transporting the raw materials, sourcing filler, blending the fertilizer, and selling to off-takers.

Also, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will perform its statutory monitoring and quality control role over blender activities.

The benefits of this new approach include but are not limited to unlocking more development finance (loans and investments) into the local fertilizer blending value chain of Nigeria.

It would also strengthen market systems and encourage actor participation. This will lead potentially to mergers and acquisition and innovation and growth across the industry which will benefit farmers.

The new approach would further reduce food price inflation in the market as the availability of fertilizer will drive down the price or cost of food products.

It is also expected to reduce the high rate of unemployment as more people will become engaged in the production process.

In his comment, the Chairman, Implementing Committee of the PFI and Executive Governor of Jigawa State, Governor Mohammed Abubakar Badaru said, “The programme has in many ways served to augment the Administration’s policy-driven programmes to diversify the Nigerian economy.

“In the main, the programme has bolstered Nigeria’s industrial base, resuscitated, and strengthened domestic production capacity for fertiliser, eliminated to the huge fertiliser subsidy burden placed on Federal Government, created thousands of direct and indirect jobs and alleviated the plight of the domestic farmer by ensuring availability of fertiliser.

“Clearly, the programme is a strong value proposition for the nation in the agriculture space given the variety of socio-economic benefits it presents. We are grateful to Mr. President for creating this programme and look forwards to supporting the next phase as it evolves.”

Speaking on the development, the MD/CEO of NSIA said with the support of the President, the programme has accomplished its principal objectives.

He said, “Having fulfilled the establishment, stabilization, and market discipline phase of PFI, the primary objective of which was to revive the blending plants and create a viable domestic blending industry, we believe the PFI should gradually evolve into the next phase, which is a tactical withdrawal of intervention in the industry and the emergence of a self-sufficient, sustainable, and efficiently operated market.

“NSIA is pleased with the Government’s decision and looks forward to seeing the innovation and creativity which will characterize the open market in the sector”.

Thomas Etuh, chairman, the Fertilizer Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria said that the restructuring is a welcome development for FEPSAN.

He said, “The new approach will afford operators the opportunity to build recognisable and trusted brands while ramping up distribution nationwide”.

Within four years of the initiative, the programme has delivered on key outcomes including over 30 million bags of 50kg NPK 20:10:10 equivalent spanning project period; price reduction on fertilizer from over N10,000 to under N5,500.

It also said that 41 blending plants have been resuscitated from an initial number of four plants at project inception, adding that an estimated 250,000 jobs (direct and indirect)across the agriculture value chain including in logistics, ports, bagging, rail, industrial warehousing, and haulage touch-points, among others have been created.

It also said food security has been achieved by facilitating increase in domestic food production through the provision of affordable, high quality fertilizer.

Ecologists develops Action Plan to protect threatened pollinating species validated

A group of ecologists has authenticated a workplan aimed at protecting pollinating species threatened with extinction.

At a meeting held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Thursday, October 15, 2021, participants validated the National Trialogue on Pollinator-Friendly Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) Country Action Plan’s multi-year workplan.

Reviewed and adopted in July 2019, the LDN Country Action Plan was produced from the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Network (BES-Net) third “Anglophone Africa Regional Trialogue: Bright Spots for Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), Pollinators and Food Security” workshop held from May 28 to 30, 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya.

BES-Net is a capacity sharing “network of networks” that promotes dialogue between science, policy and practice for more effective management of biodiversity and ecosystems, contributing to long-term human well-being and sustainable development.

During the trialogue, the participants reviewed the status of pollinators and broader land ecosystems in the region; analysed their importance to sustainable local food production, climate resilience and food security; and discussed ways to address the challenges of invasive pests and pathogens, land-use change and pesticide use.

Accordingly, a set of response options, or Trialogue action plans were identified on how to face the observed obstacles and maximise important co-benefits of sustainable management and protection of pollinators and their habitats in each of the target countries.

Following the event, the Trialogue participants from Nigeria spearheaded the implementation of the Trialogue action plans proactively within their capacity. These voluntary activities include, among others:

  • Joining the Coalition of the Willing on Pollinators, a global alliance of like-minded countries for promoting pollinator protection, and formulated the national pollinators strategy;
  • Planning to develop a national database on pollinators, carry out the pollinator status/trend studies and undertake the land degradation assessment/mapping; and
  • Organisation of a series of communities/school awareness raising and sensitization sessions on the protection of pollinators and their habitats.

On Thursday, July 25, 2019 in Abuja, officials of the Forestry Department in the Federal Ministry of Environment signed the Declaration of the Coalition of the Willing on Pollinators, an alliance aimed at promoting pollinator protection in countries. The signing affirmed the nation’s intent to act and implement a national strategy to protect pollinating species threatened with extinction.

Following the post-Trialogue commitment displayed by the team from Nigeria in implementing their post-Trialogue Action plan, BES-Net is providing seed fund to support the implementation of the Action plan priorities in Nigeria and promote the uptake of the IPBES assessments into national policy in line with national biodiversity priorities.

The national project will be implemented for two years. Catalytic financial support of $346,455.45 will be allocated to the UNDP Country Office (CO) in Nigeria through the BES-Net II’s BES Solution Fund. An additional $10,000 has been issued to CO as a preparation grant for the development of the two-year work plan.

UNDP Nigeria Country Office will provide overall technical guidance for the implementation of the project activities. The project will be implemented in collaboration with the various stakeholders including the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Nigeria Office at the national/regional level, as well as UNDP Global Policy Centre on Resilient Ecosystem and Desertification and UNESCO at the global level.

Mr Muyiwa Odele of the UNDP said while opening the validation meeting: “One of the areas that the UNDP has strongly advocated for is to make sure that the BES-Net work in Nigeria actually sits within existing national priorities. So today, we have had the privilege of inviting a few people who in their own right are experts and will share with you some of the cutting-edge work that they are doing that has implications for our BES-Net work and we can even draw inspiration from some of the activities that we will be validating today.

“The government of Nigeria is currently working on a medium to longer term development goal and food security is one of the focus areas. And the reality for Nigeria to transit from oil-based economy to a greener economy. The food secured nature is what I think the President and his team are grappling with right now.  So we have a lot of opportunities to site our work into ongoing national priorities and I will be counting on all of you to share some experiences with us on we can do this.”

Other speakers include Yuko Karauchi, a Policy Specialist, Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), who offered some remarks about BES-Net.

Marlyn Omondi,.Technical Officer at BES-Net, presented the Multi-year work plan of the Pollinator LDN Action Plan for Nigeria.

Rhoda Dia, Coordinator of the UNDP-GEF Food Security Project, stated that the scheme, which commenced in December 2017, would be rounded up next year.

Thomas Emmanuel, a landscape planner with Dreamscape Resources whose organization has been propagating the Costus Spectabilis (a flowering plant specie depicted in Nigeria’s Coat of Arms), wants it identified as a pollinator attracting plant.

He said: “This would also help combat the national plant’s obscurity, and Costus Spectabilis status as a national plant would also have positive effects on the project.

Costus Spectabilis being a healthy tasty herb, its farming will also boost food production. This is a unique venture and market opportunity.”

After a review of the Multi-year work plan, participants proceeded to validate the blueprint, which listed outputs to include:

  • Inspirations
  • Landscape
  • Schemes
  • Database management system
  • Governments
  • Globales
  • Preparation
  • Collapse
  • Fuel
  • Actually
  • Strengthening national BES platform;
  • Scoping Assessment of pollinators and pollinator services and threats to pollinators in three selected sites;
  • Development of a pollinator app, web-based illustrated identification guide and pollinator information management system (PIMS) to promote awareness and advocacy for pollinators;
  • Development of a National Pollinator strategyand integrated pest management (IPM) strategy;
  • Capacity development for target communities on community-based participatory approach Plant-Pollinator Conservation;and,
  • Agro-ecological practices for the management and development of pollinator ecosystem services.

Can Ole Gunnar Solskjaer crack semi-final conundrum?

0

Whenever Manchester United and Roma are uttered in the same sentence, you’re instantly transported back to their infamous Champions League quarter-final showdown in 2006/07.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has lost his four previous semi-finals as Manchester United manager; Familiar faces like Chris Smalling, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Edin Dzeko could line up for Roma.

Manchester United have the chance to put their semi-final hoodoo to bed once and for all when they host Roma in the last four of the Europa League on Thursday.

With the Europa League now offering the only chance for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to secure his first piece of silverware as a manager, the United boss will be hoping it is fifth time lucky after defeat in the previous four semi-finals of his tenure at Old Trafford.

Read Also; Champions League, Europa League Fixtures, Dates, And Results

“It will be a dream come true the day I can lift a trophy for this club as a manager, of course,” Solskjaer said in his pre-match press conference.
“That’s what we’re building for. We’ve been close, we’re building step by step, but take the next step it’s ifs and buts and this and that. You always talk about that.
“But for this team and myself, our ambition this season is to finish with lifting a trophy and being able to celebrate. I know how much that can mean for a group moving forward.”

Whether it be the two valiant League Cup semi-final defeats to Manchester City, the abject one to Chelsea in last season’s FA Cup, or the bitter setback against Sevilla in last year’s Europa League, United have stumbled at the last hurdle before a final time and again under Solskjaer.

It’s an unwanted knack which has seen United’s wait for a silverware stretch into a concerning fourth year, and there’s a growing sense that now really is the time for Solskjaer to underline the progress he has made at Old Trafford by reaching that first final and getting his hands on that first piece of silverware.

This barren four-year spell that has unfolded since Jose Mourinho guided United to victory in the 2017 Europa League final constitutes the club’s longest trophy drought since 1990 when Sir Alex Ferguson’s FA Cup victory ended a five-year wait for a trophy.

That illusive first trophy opened the floodgates for Ferguson and Manchester United, with trophy after trophy flowing into Old Trafford right up until he announced his retirement in 2013. You just wonder whether this season’s Europa League could have a snowball effect, and be the first of many for Solskjaer.

Roma reunion

Chris Smalling congratulates Henrikh Mkhitaryan after he scored Manchester United’s second goal in the 2017 Europa League final victory over Ajax

Standing between Manchester United and a first final under Solskjaer is a Roma side packed full of familiar faces.
Centre-back Chris Smalling spent almost a decade at Old Trafford, winning five major honors, before moving to Roma in 2019, while forward Henrikh Mkhitaryan won two trophies during two somewhat fractious seasons in Manchester.

Both Smalling and Mkhitaryan started for United when they last won a trophy, with the Armenia international’s second-half strike putting the seal on a 2-0 victory over Ajax in the 2017 Europa League final in Stockholm.
Reunions with former teammates aside, there are a number of faces in the Roma camp United won’t be overly pleased to see again.

Former Premier League stars Edin Dzeko, Pedro and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are part of the travelling Roma squad

Striker Edin Dzeko developed the habit of scoring against United during his five-season spell at Manchester City, while former Chelsea forward Pedro famously scored Barcelona’s opening goal in the 2011 Champions League final at Wembley.

Premier League fans will also remember Federico Fazio, formerly of Tottenham, Jordan Veretout, formerly of Aston Villa, and Davide Santon, formerly of Newcastle, who are part of the Paulo Fonseca’s traveling Roma party.

Having weathered an early Paul Scholes red card and left the Stadio Olimpico with a 2-1 first-leg deficit after Wayne Rooney’s crucial away goal, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side returned to an expectant Old Trafford for a mouth-watering return leg against Roma.

But what United’s scintillating run to the last four did do was reinstall belief and lay foundations and ambitions for future success, which were realized the following season when United got their hands back on the Champions League trophy after being Chelsea on penalties in 2008 final in Moscow.

The challenge facing Solskjaer’s squad on Thursday is similar in many ways to his final season as a player, a squad with an abundance of talent and potential is waiting to take that next giant leap. They did that under Ferguson, now it’s over to Solskjaer to repeat the feat.
