0

The Canadian province of Ontario will the use of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday to people turning 40 or older this year as epidemic rages.

According to a government source, the change will be announced on Monday and go into effect across the province on Tuesday.

The vaccine has already been distributed to pharmacies but currently can only be given to people turning 55 or older this year.

Health Canada earlier said it would review reports of serious blood clots and bleeding in a small number of people who had received the AstraZeneca vaccine in other countries, and an independent panel called the National Advisory Council on Immunization (NACI) recommended that it only be given to people 55 and older.

it had reviewed all available evidence and would not restricts the use of vaccine because its benefits outweigh its potential risks.

“The estimated the risk of clots is small, roughly four in a million people who receive the vaccine. It the complication was treatable, two people have developed it in Canada, and both are recovering,” Health Canada.

Ontario reported 4,250 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday. The Ontario Hospital Association said 59 patients were admitted to intensive care, bringing the number of COVID-19 patients in ICUs to 737.

Health Canada said those who receive the vaccine should seek medical attention immediately if they experience shortness of breath, chest pain, leg swelling, persistent belly pain, neurological symptoms like severe headaches or blurred vision, or skin bruising or tiny blood spots under the skin beyond the site of the injection.

“Digital Switch-Over will enhance job creation, content development”- Governor Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, says his administration will support the Digital Switch Over (DSO) being embarked by the country, noting that it would enhance job creation and content development.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who acknowledged that the DSO would be of immense benefit to residents, said Lagos State would be providing publicity support for the rollout.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said this over the weekend when the Ministerial Taskforce of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture on Digital Switch-Over led by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, paid him a courtesy visit at the Lagos House, Marina.

https://twitter.com/followlasg/status/1383840690484879361

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the DSO will provide job opportunities for youths and many businesses, especially those in the entertainment and tourism industry.

He said the DSO will also provide opportunity for government to use the content to inform and engage the citizens as well as bring governance closer to the people.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who advised the Ministerial Taskforce on the Digital Switch Over to make the FreeTV box and after-sale support easily accessible, said making the FreeTV Set Top Box a one-off payment with a yearly renewal, will provide opportunity for millions of Nigerians who cannot afford to pay the subscription fees being charged by the PayTV platforms to enjoy the benefit of digital television.

“The movement from analogue set-up that we currently have to digital is apt and it speaks to reality of what we have today. Everywhere in the world, technology is now a fundamental and critical deliverable of government. It presents an opportunity for citizens to have access to local, national and international space.

“As a forward looking state, we are in partnership and we see it as bringing the future to our citizens, so we do not have a problem with it at all.

“Even for us as a State, we have been developing our metropolitan fiber optics to provide fiber connectivity as one of the solutions for our citizens to have access to cheaper data.

“We will support the DSO. We want Lagos to continue to set the pace for the nation. We will help our people to be exposed to modern and international best practices. We will be willing to work with you and ensure that we deliver jointly on April 29,”  Sanwo-Olu said.

Speaking earlier, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said the proposed rollout in Lagos would be a critical milestone for the DSO and the creative industry as over one million jobs would be provided nationwide.

He said with the FreeTV of the DSO, Nigerians would have opportunities to watch over 60 channels with great contents at a cheaper rate and without subscription to pay TV.

Mohammed who presented Governor Sanwo-Olu with the Set Top Box for the DSO said it would also enable government to get the data of every household with television, thereby making the collection of television and radio licenses easier, adding that the Nigerian Broadcasting Code (NBC) had been amended to make provisions for the switch over from analogue to digital.

The Minister of Information and Culture also disclosed that six months after the rollout of the DSO in Lagos, the NBC would ask television stations to shut down their analogue broadcast equipment, thereby making more spectrum available for data and other telecommunication services.

Mohammed who noted that the DSO is relevant to the Lagos Smart City Project and the Lagos Broadband initiative, urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to direct the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) to provide out-of-home boards, lamp post and other publicity support for the DSO launch for at least three months.

“The rollout in Lagos reflects our decision to take the DSO to commercial centres across the country. With a population of over 20 million, and projected TV Households of over five million, the launch of FreeTV in Lagos State will be a critical milestone for the DSO and for Nigeria’s broadcast and creative industry.

“Lagos State, which is the hub of the Creative Industry, will take a large share of the 1 million jobs to be created. Since FreeTV helps to provide Value Added Services, the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 LCDAs in Lagos State will be supported in the collection of Television and Radio Licenses from residents. With FreeTV’s push system for information services, the FreeTV platform can be used to broadcast information on Lagos State activities to all viewers.

“A major advantage of the DSO is that viewers will not pay subscription fees. Once they have acquired the Set Top Box and pay the once-a-year access fee, which is a token, it is free viewing all the way. Millions of Nigerians who cannot afford to pay the rising subscription fees being charged by the PayTV platforms can now enjoy the benefits of digital television. This is the meaning of bridging the digital divide,”  the Information Minister said.

PDP benefited from President Buhari’s continuity – Okechukwu

Voice of Nigeria’s Director-General, Mr Osita Okechukwu says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is a principal beneficiary of President Buhari’s continuity trademark.

He stated this while expressing displeasure at PDP’s dismissal of President Buhari’s promise on continuity after he returned from his medical check-up.

According to him, one cannot like PDP dismiss offhand the hunger and poverty, banditry, killings, kidnapping, and Boko Haram insurgency in the land; “However one cannot either dismiss offhand the fine points of President Buhari’s regime, which whoever takes over in 2023 must as a matter of urgent necessity continue.

“For us Buharist, we must candidly agree that some unforced errors were made; however our continuity trademark in many spheres of public affairs are unbeatable. And PDP is the main beneficiary. To turn round now to clean mouth and condemn Mr President is unconscionable and height of ingratitude. Banditry, Herdsmen/Farmers clashes, kidnapping and insurgency will sooner than later not only abate but vanish.” Okechukwu said.

He explained that the fine points of continuity which Mr President bequeathed the PDP as a principal beneficiary is the over 1,000 Board appointments which tenure was not concluded adding that in 1999, PDP sacked all Board members and made appointments of their members.

On this issue, opinion was divided, some of us canvased that Mr President should dissolve all the Boards to make room for APC members and supporters and Buhari said an emphatic no. These PDP Board appointees were not only beneficiaries but more or less adulterated our transparency manifesto.

Point two, all the federal contracts, most remarkable is over 1,000 federal roads. In this instance once more opinion was divided some argued that the contracts should be revoked and awarded fresh as contracts, Mr President said an emphatic no.

In 1999, PDP revoked nearly all Petroleum Trust Fund ongoing contracts and made a bazaar of the exercise. One of the casualties was the Enugu Urban Water Scheme; which was callously awarded to Chinese instead of Strabag of Germany which designed the project. It failed and today scarcity of water in Enugu is the outcome.

PDP became the beneficiary when Mr President started paying the contractors some of whom their monies were embezzled by the PDP in what turned out to be dubbed the locust years when oil sold above $100 per barrel.

Point three, was the much mangled and manipulated Privatisation program; where State-Owned Enterprises were auctioned off. Even Ministerial and Legislative quarters were sold. In this instance, opinion was once divided and Mr President maintained his continuity standard. The bad side of the PDP Privatisation program was that the accounting process was less than transparent.

Point four is Buhari’s Agrarian Revolution #BUGREV. In #BUGREV, Mr President has invested heavily to make us produce what we eat, therefore has demonstrated that every square meter of land in Nigeria is fertile for one crop or the other.

Like or hate Mr President, no rational and patriotic Nigerian will dismiss the ideas that #BUGREV, a program aimed at rural Agro-Industrialization will not continue. Luckily, the beneficiaries are across the board, multi-partisan and non-partisan inclusive. One stands to be contradicted.

Point five, is the Executive Order 10, an Order Mr President primarily signed to give life to Section 121(3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to Mr Okechukwu, Executive Order 10 has the primary aim to advance the frontiers of democracy at the state level, curb the excesses of governors who rule more or less like Emperors.

For Buhari’s traducers, they ignored this incremental restructuring and never gave him credit in this landmark amendment. The outcome of the conspiracy against Buhari is the nationwide strike by legislative and judiciary workers. Only the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics will compute the huge cost of the nationwide strike, which grounded our democracy.

Accordingly, the Continuity trademark of Mr President is legendary and too numerous to mention here for want of space. Albeit, suffice it to posit that it’s unconscionable for the PDP the main beneficiary of this uncommon standard to turn round and condemn these laudable trademarks.

In sum, the re-energise statement by my great party the APC is genuine; PDP should therefore rest assured that, unlike the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo of PDP stock, who attempted and broached Third Term Agenda, President has not such obnoxious plan.

PDP should perish such thought and should not insinuate; accordingly my candid appeal is let’s all put propaganda aside and join hands to support the genuine efforts of the federal and state security agencies and the local vigilantes to come over this cliff-hanger-phase,” he added.

UEFA Threatens To Ban Breakaway Clubs From All Competitions

0

European football’s governing body UEFA has warned clubs linked to a breakaway Super League that they face being banned from domestic and international competitions if they set up a rival to the Champions League.

In a joint statement with Spanish, English and Italian leagues and federations, UEFA said it will consider “all measures”, including the courts and bans from domestic leagues, in opposition to plans for a breakaway competition.

UEFA said it had learnt that clubs from those countries “may be planning to announce their creation of a closed, so-called Super League”.

“If this were to happen, we wish to reiterate that we….(and) also FIFA and all our member associations – will remain united in our efforts to stop this cynical project, a project that is founded on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever,” UEFA said.

“We will consider all measures available to us, at all levels, both judicial and sporting in order to prevent this happening. Football is based on open competitions and sporting merit; it cannot be any other way.”
