Tanimu Turaki Submits Nomination Form for PDP Chairmanship Race

0

The campaign team of former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, has confirmed the submission of his nomination forms to contest for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the party’s 2025 National Convention.

Addressing journalists at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, Umar Sani, who led the Turaki team, said the candidate had completed and submitted all necessary forms, including the expression of interest and nomination documents, before the deadline.

“Today, being the 27th of October, 2025, is the final day for submission of nomination forms. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has fulfilled all righteousness and has duly submitted all required forms, which have been officially acknowledged,” Sani stated.

He said that the team was now waiting for the party to invite Turaki for screening in line with the timetable set by the National Convention Organizing Committee (NCOC).

When asked about the confusion surrounding the availability of nomination forms, particularly the complaints from former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, Sani dismissed the concerns, insisting that his team followed due process.

“Today is not for selling forms; it is for submission. If anyone went to Wadata House looking for forms, they went to the wrong place. We have followed due process and submitted our forms. How we got the form is immaterial; the important thing is that we complied with the party’s guidelines,” he explained.

Responding to questions about internal democracy and the alleged consensus adoption of Turaki as the North’s preferred candidate, Sani maintained that proper consultations were held among party stakeholders and governors from the northern region.

“Consultations were conducted with all relevant stakeholders. The governors of Zamfara, Adamawa, and other states in the North were represented. After deliberations, the governors agreed on Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as the consensus candidate, and no one objected during that meeting,” he explained.

Sani dismissed claims that Turaki was afraid of other aspirants, describing him as a loyal and long-serving member of the PDP who had contributed immensely to the party’s growth.

“Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has never left the PDP. He has always participated in party activities, provided support both financially and legally, and remains an independent-minded leader capable of uniting all interests within the party,” he stated.

On reconciliation with other aspirants, Sani said that Turaki maintains cordial relationships with all, including Lamido, emphasizing that there is no personal rift between them.

“Kabiru Tanimu Turaki even spoke with Sule Lamido on the phone two days ago. This is not a personal issue; it’s a party matter. They are brothers and have mutual respect for each other,” he added.

With the submission of his forms, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki joins the race for the PDP’s top position, as the party prepares for its National Convention scheduled for November in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Lamido Decries Irregularities in PDP Nomination Process

Jigawa State former governor and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido, has expressed dismay over his inability to obtain the nomination form to contest for the position of National Chairman ahead of the party’s 2025 National Convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Lamido, who visited the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja on Friday, told journalists that he was unable to access the form as the office of the National Organising Secretary (NOS) was locked, while officials at the secretariat claimed ignorance of the form’s whereabouts.

“PDP is one big family, and coming here is like coming home. But I was surprised to find the NOS office under lock and key. Nobody seems to know where the forms are, how they were printed or what colour they are. Strangely, a party like ours can have such disorganisation,” Lamido said.

The former governor said he met with the National Secretary of the party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who also confirmed that he had not seen the forms.

Anyanwu stated, “As the National Secretary, my job includes keeping records and accounts of all sales of forms, but I am not in custody of any. I have not even seen what the forms look like. Nobody has come to me to buy one.”

Lamido lamented what he described as internal confusion within the party’s administrative system, saying he might seek legal redress if denied the opportunity to participate in the process.

He said; “If I don’t get the form, I’ll go to court. But this is a family affair. The PDP must be organised and disciplined to win elections. We cannot afford internal chaos.”

Lamido dismissed reports that some PDP Governors refused to endorse him due to alleged links with another political party, the ADC, describing such claims as “divisive and baseless.”

“Those governors met me in the PDP. I’ve been here since 1998, when we fought to build this party. The PDP will overcome its current challenges and come back stronger,” he said.

Lamido called for unity and adherence to the party’s constitution as the only path to reclaiming power in 2027, urging members to remain focused on the “bigger picture of saving Nigeria from the APC.”

Screening of Aspirants Postponed

Meanwhile, the PDP has announced that the screening of aspirants for the National Convention has been postponed.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, the committee said; “the decision was due to unforeseen circumstances.”

Governor Fintiri noted that a new date for the screening exercise would be communicated in due course, while expressing regret for any inconvenience the postponement may cause.

He reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to ensuring a credible and hitch-free 2025 Elective National Convention, scheduled for Saturday, 15th to Sunday, 16th November 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Paul Biya Re-elected President of Cameroon for Eighth Term

0

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, the world’s oldest serving leader, has won an eighth term in office, according to official results announced by the Constitutional Council on Monday.

Announcing the results, the President of the Constitutional Council, Clement Atangana, said; “Paul Biya is hereby declared elected President of the Republic, having obtained the majority of the votes cast.”

The 92-year-old leader secured 53.66 percent of the votes to defeat his main challenger and former ally, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who polled 35.19 percent in the October 12 presidential election.

The victory extends President Biya’s four-decade rule and could keep him in power until he is nearly 100 years old.

However, the declaration of results has sparked fresh tension across the country, with reports of protests and clashes between opposition supporters and security forces.

Opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma alleged on social media that two people were killed after gunfire erupted near his residence in Garoua, northern Cameroon, shortly after the announcement. He did not specify who was responsible for the shooting.

He had claimed victory in the election and vowed not to accept any other result. At least four people were reported dead in Douala, the nation’s commercial capital, a day before the final results were released following confrontations between protesters and security operatives.

Tchiroma, a former government spokesperson and employment minister in his late seventies, broke away from Biya earlier this year and ran with the support of several opposition parties and civic groups.

Political analysts say the result could deepen public discontent. Francois Conradie, Lead Political Economist at Oxford Economics, noted that the government faces “a notably shaky mandate,” while Murithi Mutiga, Africa Programme Director at the International Crisis Group, called on President Biya to initiate national dialogue to prevent further escalation.

President Biya, who has been in power since 1982, removed term limits in 2008 and has consistently won re-election with wide margins.

The situation remains tense as international observers and local stakeholders call for restraint and peaceful resolution of post-election disputes.

Reps Advance Occupational Health, Safety Bill to Second Reading

0

A major legislative effort to modernise workers’ protection in Nigeria has advanced, as the Occupational Health and Safety Bill, 2025, scaled second reading in the House of Representatives.

The proposed law seeks to provide a stronger and more comprehensive legal framework for the safety, health, and welfare of workers across all workplaces in the country.

Sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, and six other lawmakers, the bill aims “to repeal the existing Factories Act, Cap F1, LFN, 2004, which has been widely criticised for being narrow in scope, weak in enforcement, and outdated.”

The current Factories Act, which dates back to 1958, mainly covers traditional industrial workplaces and does not address the realities of modern work environments.

Labour unions, safety advocates, and international bodies such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO) have long called for its replacement, noting that “it excludes large segments of the workforce and contributes to underreporting of workplace accidents.”

If enacted, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 2025, will expand coverage beyond factories to include construction sites, farms, mines, and corporate offices.

Co-sponsor David Zachariah said the proposal was a crucial intervention for Nigerian workers, stressing that “the existing framework no longer reflects current work patterns.”

Supporters also argue that adopting globally recognised safety frameworks would enhance Nigeria’s compliance with international labour standards and improve the country’s attractiveness to foreign investors.

Deputy Speaker Kalu, who presided over the session, referred the bill to the Committees on Labour, Employment and Productivity, and Safety Standards and Regulations for further legislative action.

Meanwhile, the Society of Occupational and Environmental Health Physicians of Nigeria (SOEHPON) has pledged its support for the bill.

SOEHPON noted that “it has been working with lawmakers to improve occupational health and safety practices across all sectors, including the informal economy.”

The group, alongside the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other stakeholders, has been a leading advocate for the legislation aimed at ensuring legal protection and safer working conditions for Nigerian workers.

Film Censors Board to Establish Digital Archive for Nollywood Films

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has announced plans to establish a digital archive for all films approved and classified by the board.

The Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Shaibu Husseini, revealed this in an interview with the Press on Monday in Abuja.

His statement comes as Nigeria joins the global community to celebrate the 2025 World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (WDAH), observed annually on October 27, with the theme, “Your Window to the World.”

Dr. Husseini noted that beyond its core mandate of film censorship and classification, the board also serves as a repository of approved films.

He added that, in keeping with the demands of the digital era, the NFVCB is taking steps to develop a comprehensive digital archive to preserve the nation’s classified films for future reference and research.

“When I was appointed by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in January of 2024, the very first thing that I said we must begin to do is how to archive these films properly.

“There have been some archival efforts in the past, but the world has moved from that analogue era to the digital era.”

“It is time for us to begin to digitise these works and put them in a format that will make them easily retrievable.”

“At the moment, they are in a format where you can access them; we have downloaded some of the VHS into CDs/VCDs.”

“Now we need to turn the CDs and VCDs into formats that you can access them by just getting them via the link or tapping on the computer,” he said.

According to Husseini, the board has about 280,000 films ready for migration to the proposed digital archive, where they will be preserved and stored in formats compatible with modern digital technology.

“If you want to explore them, beyond seeing the titles, then you have to go and get the rights from the right owners because we do not have the rights to the films.

“We have submitted the proposal, and it has been approved by our minister and even at the higher level because it is expensive to digitise them.

“As soon as the 2025 budget is released, we will start the process of digitising them to put them in the right format,” Husseini said.

Troops Sustain Offensive Against Boko Haram in Northeast Nigeria

0

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have sustained their offensive against Boko Haram terrorists in Northeast Nigeria.

During a precision night operation along the Gamboru–Dikwa–Marte axis in Borno State, the troops neutralised 10 insurgents and recovered a cache of arms and equipment.

According to a statement by the Media Information Officer, Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the operation followed an earlier encounter in Katarko where troops neutralised over 50 terrorists.

In the latest engagement, troops of Sector 1 under the 24 Task Force Brigade foiled an attempted infiltration into Gamboru Ngala from the Flatari axis.

“At about 23:50 hours on 25 October 2025, the troops, while manning a pre-established ambush position, sighted and engaged the hostile elements. They delivered heavy and accurate suppressive fire, forcing the insurgents to retreat in disarray,”

At first light, the area was systematically cleared, confirming 10 terrorists neutralised. A thorough search led to the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and equipment – including five AK-47 rifles, a PKT machine gun, locally-made weapons, loaded magazines, motorcycles, bicycles, and assorted personal items,” the statement reads.

The Military High Command commended the troops for their gallantry and professionalism, reaffirming that the success of the ambush underscores the effectiveness of ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the region.

OPHK remains committed to sustaining offensive actions, protecting civilians, and restoring lasting peace to the North East,” the Military High Command said.

Produced in collaboration with Afrochives Studio, the film portrays powerful human stories from Iva Valley, Enugu State, spotlighting a community often overlooked in national discourse.

According to the Foundation, the anthology reflects the struggles and resilience of women, children, and youths grappling with poverty, gender inequality, and social exclusion, while embodying hope for change.

The project aligns with the Kunie Foundation’s mission to advance social inclusion, gender equity, and socio-economic transformation through data-driven advocacy and strategic partnerships.

Comprising three short films, the anthology explores themes of masculinity and gender-based violence, the effects of poverty on ambition, and how weak health systems and exclusion perpetuate inequality.

Executive Director Ms. Damilola Oyewusi described the selection as a reminder that storytelling remains a powerful tool for shaping policy and driving change, expressing optimism that the film will ignite meaningful dialogue and inspire action around poverty, gender, and inclusion in Nigeria.

“Storytelling helps us confront uncomfortable truths with empathy.

“Echoes From the Shadows gives voice to people who are too often spoken about, but rarely listened to.

“Platforms like AIFF help move these experiences from the margins to the centre of development conversations,” she hinted.

NAHCON Urges Gombe Government to Fund Pilgrims Board

0

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has appealed to the Gombe State Government to release funds to the State Pilgrims Welfare Board to enable it meet the December 21 deadline set by the Saudi authorities for the payment of Hajj fares.

The Commissioner, representing the North East at NAHCON, Abuja, Alhaji Abba Jatau, made the appeal when he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya in Gombe.

Alhaji Jatau explained that “early remittance of Hajj payments to the Saudi authorities through NAHCON would significantly minimise logistical challenges often encountered during the pilgrimage.”

He further noted that timely payment would facilitate the prompt issuance of visas to intending pilgrims, which is expected to close on February 2nd, 2026.

Addressing health-related matters, the NAHCON Commissioner disclosed that Saudi authorities had issued new guidelines making vaccination mandatory for all intending pilgrims.

He, however, said that pregnant women, the elderly, the sick, and persons with mental illness were prohibited from participating in the exercise.

Alhaji Jatau commended the Executive Secretary of the Gombe State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Sa’adu Hassan, for his dedication and contributions toward the success of Hajj operations at both state and national levels.

In his response, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, said; “the visit by NAHCON would further strengthen the state government’s commitment to addressing challenges in the sector.”

Professor Njodi acknowledged that the rate of Hajj fare payments among intending pilgrims in the state remained relatively low but promised that the Yahaya administration would look into the issues raised and take appropriate steps within available resources.

On the health concerns highlighted by the North East Commissioner, the SSG reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining its record of effective health management.

He emphasised that vaccination would remain compulsory for all intending pilgrims from Gombe State.

The Executive Secretary of the Gombe State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, announced that 1,631 slots had been allocated to Gombe State for the 2026 Hajj.

He, however, noted that the number may be reduced due to certain adjustments.

Alhaji Hassan also revealed that ₦8.2 million had been earmarked for each slot, but the amount could be reviewed downward depending on future developments.

Falcons Ready For Tuesday’s AFCON Clash – Madugu

0

Head Coach, Justine Madugu, has affirmed that Nigeria expects a tough game against the Amazons of Bénin Republic in Abeokuta on Tuesday and will take nothing for granted against their less-adulated neighbours to the west.

The 10-time champions are in control of the fixture after a 2-0 win in the first leg away from home, courtesy goals by Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo.

However, the Amazons could storm the Ogun State capital better prepared than they were in the first leg at the Stade Kégué in Lome on Friday.

We are looking forward to a tough game from the Beninoise, but we will be ready for that by putting up a good performance with the ultimate goal of qualification to the 2026 Women’s AFCON, where we hope to retain our title and further qualify for the World Cup in Brazil in 2027.

“The Amazons, with about 10 professional players from Germany, Morocco, France, and Equatorial Guinea, gave a good account of themselves in the first leg, to underscore the fact that underrating any team now in Africa could be at your own peril. We are not taking anything for granted or leaving anything to chance. We will be ready to go all out for victory.”

The Super Falcons will likely parade the same squad as featured in the first leg in the Togolese capital three days ago, with goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie in goal and Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Tosin Demehin, and Ashley Plumptre as rearguard, while captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Deborah Abiodun, and Taiwo Afolabi take hold of the midfield.

Ihezuo, Okoronkwo, and Folashade Ijamilusi should be at the fore, though Madugu also has the options of six-time Africa Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala, Joy Omewa, and Kafayat Mafisere.

The encounter at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Abeokuta, will kick off at 4 pm, with the winner on aggregate earning a ticket to the 14th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Morocco, 17th March to 3rd April 2026.
