NPFL: Rangers beats Adamawa, Goes Joint Top With Kwara

0

The Enugu Rangers went joint top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) table with Kwara United, after beating a very defensive Adamawa United 1-0 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu on Match-day 15.

The Flying Antelopes had started strong in a one sided first half with Adamawa United playing catch up. However, the Enugu side failed to make the best of ball possession with Christian Nnaji the major culprit in a first 45 minutes that ended 0-0.

The second half started as they first did with Rangers asking all the questions and encountering much resistance from Adamawa. When it looked like the game was heading for a draw, Uche John started an attack with a headed pass to substitute Eliagwu. He wasted no time in finding Chignons Ezekwe, who simply tapped in for the only goal of the encounter.

With the win Rangers joined Kwara United as joint leaders but second with 27 points from 15 games and will next take on Katsina United on Thursday. Adamawa United remains at the bottom of the league log and will be taking on Abia Warriors in Gombe.

Roger Federer Aims To Be ‘100%’ At Wimbledon Tournament

0

Tennis sensation Roger Federer who has just announced that he will not play in Dubai, says he aims to be 100% at the Wimbledon Tournament scheduled to start on the 28th of June 2021.

The Swiss international made his comeback against Nikolos Basilashvili and Dan Evans after months out through injury, and he continues his recovery to make the Wimbledon event.

“I have been out for so long that I am delighted to have had the opportunity to play three sets against two of the best players on the Tour,” Federer said at a press conference. “This is an important step for me. As I said: I’m not 100% yet. I feel it, I feel it and I see it.”

“The important thing for me is to be 100% ahead of the season on the grass. I am still working and building my path; this is just a stepping stone.I’m happy with the way I played and the way I felt on the pitch today.”

“I definitely felt better against Evans physically, but Basilashvili plays a completely different tennis than him. Of course I would have liked to play tomorrow (Dubai) too, don’t get me wrong. But at the same time I’m happy to be able to rest and my performance.”

“I’m happy to be back playing on the Tour. I am glad I came here to Doha. So it’s really a positive return for me. I’m really happy,” he added.

Federer then spoke bluntly about his true goal during the 2021 Australian Open that he missed because of his injury.

“When I had my second surgery, I immediately thought about the Australian Open. When I realized that progress was minimal and that I needed to be more careful, however, I knew I had to change my schedule,” Federer said.

“Over the next four months, my team and I will need to be good at evaluating the calendar and figuring out how much work my body can handle. This is the best way to prepare for my real start to the season, which is the one on grass.”

“I think playing matches is important to me, and the season on clay comes before the season on grass. From this point of view, I have no choice but to play on clay. I don’t know if it will be bad for me; I’ll only know in training,” he added.

Senate President urges Igbos to play central role in politics

0

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan has advised the Igbos in the Southeast to seize the opportunity provided by the Buhari administration to gravitate to the centre of Nigerian politics.

Senator Lawan spoke on Sunday at the Thanksgiving which held at Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri in Imo State to commemorate the one year in office of Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The Senate President said Governor Uzodimma had achieved so much in one year because he had taken the politics beyond the Southeast region to the centre.

“Today, we are celebrating one year of his Governorship in Imo State. The National Assembly is here. Let me say the presence of the Vice President, representing the President, and all the Governors here is a very clear testimony of his relationship with the centre of Nigeria.

“He doesn’t waste time in looking for an opportunity like this and the result is what you see. You have so much Intervention. He has achieved so much in one year because he does not play his politics only in the Southeast.

“He has taken his politics to the centre as well and therefore I will take this opportunity to appeal to our people in the Southeast: Grab the opportunity to be at the centre of Nigerian politics.

“APC administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is so willing, so liberal and forthcoming to support every part of Nigeria to make sure that Nigeria is evenly developed.

“So what we are witnessing here in Imo will be replicated in Ebonyi. We hope by the Grace of God Anambra is coming on board. We are expecting Abia to be on board. And of course, we are hoping to bring Enugu on board.

“Nigeria should be a united country where the progressives provide the leadership for this country to be great.

“We have some issues today. We have some security challenges. No country ever developed without facing challenges but what makes the difference is the willingness, the capacity to fight your challenges and we can do this together and make Nigeria a safer place, a better place and make all the people of Nigeria to have a better life,” Lawan said.

The Senate President said Uzodimma, who was a Senator during the Eighth National Assembly, served “extremely well”.

“He distinguished himself a Senator of the Federal Republic, Very reliable, predictable, passionate and he is someone you can always rely on.

“We served in so many other parliamentary organisations within and outside the country and we never found him wanting.

“So when he became the Governor of Imo State, I just thought Imo will be taken to the next level by the Grace of God because they have gotten the right person,” Lawan said.

The Senate President assured the Governor that the Senate and the National Assembly, in general, would always be on his side.

Senator Lawan further added that “We will continue to support you. We will continue to support the government of Imo State. We will continue to support the entire people of Imo State”.

The Senate President was accompanied on the trip from Abuja by the Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Senator Sani Mohammed Musa, Senator Bello Mandiya and the Senate Spokesman, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru.

Kelechi Iheanacho Scores First Premier League Hat-Trick

0

Nigerian international and Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho’s first Premier League hat-trick inspired Leicester City to a 5-0 demolition of bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United at the King Power Stadium.

It was Paul Heckingbottom’s first game as interim coach of Sheffield United after Chris Wilder departed the club on Saturday.

Leicester started to dominate possession early and created chances through Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy, but the Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale did brilliantly to save both efforts. Before halftime, Vardy made a run down the left flank and unselfishly squared the ball to Iheanacho for an easy tap-in to make it 1-0 to the hosts.

The Foxes continued to press the visitors in the second half and the Super Eagles striker set up Vardy twice. However, the former England striker failed to convert and his run of seven games without a goal continued.

Leicester’s second eventually came when half-time substitute Marc Albrighton picked out Perez after a great run down the right wing. Perez fired the ball into the bottom corner of the net to extend the lead for the hosts.

Shortly after, Iheanacho added his second goal of the afternoon after a neat one-two with Vardy. The Nigerian found himself in the box and fired the ball into the net to make it 3-0 to the hosts.

With two goals already in the game, Iheanacho was in the mood and wasn’t planning to stop there. The Nigerian has been displaying his great abilities in recent games and his potential was finally being realised against Sheffield United.

Five minutes later, fellow Nigerian Wilfred Ndidi found Iheanacho in the middle of the opposition half, and the striker worked himself into space before firing the ball from 25 yards out into the right bottom corner of the net.

Leicester’s fifth goal came when Vardy’s cross was turned into the net at close range by Sheffield defender Ethan Ampadu for an own goal to round off the demolition of Sheffield United.

It was a vital win for Leicester, who move into second place above Manchester United. Sheffield United remain at the bottom of the table with 14 points.

With a number of Leicester players out injured, Man of the match Iheanacho has been showing why he deserves a regular spot in the starting eleven team. He has scored in three successive Premier League games for the first time.

“[Iheanacho] has been in great form, he’s playing at a really high level,” Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers said. “It wasn’t just his goals, he is dropping in short to get into the right spaces that we wanted him to where we could take advantage of it.”

“Him and Jamie up front, the combination was very good with Ayoze in behind. His [Vardy’s] movement is just so good and it allows the players to get up with him.”

London police face backlash after dragging mourners from vigil

0

London police faced criticism from the public on Sunday and an official inquiry into their actions after using heavy-handed tactics to break up an outdoor vigil for a woman whose suspected killer is a police officer.

The disappearance of Sarah Everard, 33, as she walked home on the evening of March 3, has provoked a huge outpouring of grief and dismay in Britain at the failure of police and wider society to tackle violence against women.

Police had denied permission for a vigil on Saturday evening at London’s Clapham Common, near where Everard was last seen alive, citing regulations aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus.

But hundreds of people, mostly women, gathered peacefully at the park in defiance of the ban to pay their respects to Everard throughout Saturday, including Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Later on Saturday dozens of police officers marched into the crowd to shouts of “shame on you”. Scuffles broke out and officers dragged women away from the scene.

London police chief Cressida Dick backed her officers and said that they needed to make a very difficult judgement.

“We’re still in a pandemic, unlawful gatherings are unlawful gatherings, officers have to take action if people are putting themselves massively at risk,” Dick told reporters.

Asked if she was considering resigning, she said: “No, I’m not.”

Home Secretary Priti Patel, the minister in charge of policing, described footage of the incident as “upsetting”. Her office said she had ordered an independent inquiry after an initial police report left some questions unanswered.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan also said he was not satisfied with police chiefs’ explanation of the events and said officers’ conduct must be examined.

An image of officers handcuffing a woman on Saturday night as she lay on the floor was widely shared and condemned on social media.

The woman, Patsy Stevenson, told LBC radio: “The main point that everyone was trying to get across when everything happened is that women don’t feel safe, they don’t feel safe walking down a street and that’s the bare minimum we should feel the freedom to do.”

She said she was fined 200 pounds ($278) for breaching COVID regulations

Everard’s murder has resonated with woman across the country, prompting thousands to share on social media their experiences of violence and sexual assaults perpetrated by men, and vividly describe the daily fear they feel.

On Sunday, hundreds gathered outside police headquarters and marched to a grassy square outside parliament where they lay down en masse in calm protest. Some carried anti-police placards, while others protested against violence against women.

Separately, a steady flow of quiet mourners continued to visit the site of the vigil, placing flowers around a bandstand.

A police officer charged with Everard’s murder appeared in court on Saturday. Police discovered her body on Wednesday in woodland about 50 miles (80 km) southeast of London. The court heard that her body was found in a builder’s refuse bag, and identified using dental records.
