NALDA  to generate organic fertilizer from rabbit urine

The National Agricultural Land Development Authority  (NALDA) says it has harvested twenty five thousand liters of urine from over five thousand rabbits that would be used as organic fertilizer for it farms around the country.

The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NALDA Prince Paul Ikonne revealed this in Owerri, the Imo State capital, South East Nigeria, during the unveiling of Rabbit Waste Organic Fertilizer.

Prince Ikonne explained that according to the result analysis from the laboratory, the rabbit urine contains Nitrogen: 13.3 g/l; Chloride (Cl-): 5.87 g/l; Sodium (Na+): 3.17 g/l;

Potassium (k+): 1.750 g/l; Inorganic sulfur (S): 0.163 g/l; Phosphate (P): 0.95 g/l; pH: 5:6 all of which are good for the soil.

According to Ikonne, the Authority is expected to harvest 2,142,000 litter of urine within one year.

He said aside generating money from selling the rabbits; the farmers would also generate money from the rabbit waste.

All the NALDA farmers who submit their urine to various collection centers are being paid to encourage them on the business viability of Rabbit Urine as Organic fertilizer”

Ikonne described agro-business as a lucrative venture that requires patience noting that the organic fertilizer would be distributed to farmers alongside spraying machines to increase their yield.

The Executive Secretary said the federal government in its efforts to engage more youths in the agricultural value chain launched rabbit farming in November of 2020 with Imo, Abia, Cross River and Oyo as pilot states for the programme adding that rabbits were subsequently distributed to those who indicated interest in the project.

He said the program was designed to engage 17,000 young Nigerians into rabbit rearing, but that as a result of learning points from the first pilot phase, NALDA has generated a deep insight around the dynamics of rabbit farming.

It is on this backdrop, that the program will be extended to other states and also increase the number of participants in the existing states.”

While analysing the prospect, Ikonne said with five rabbits given to farmers on five per farmers bases, in three months, 85,000 will be distributed, while 10 rabbits kits where given per gestation period and 20 rabbits is expected to be recovered from each farmer within the same period amounting to 340,000 rabbits in three months, 680,000 in six months and 136, 0000 in a year.

The Imo State Executive Coordinator NALDA Mr. Amanze Ofor stated that about one hundred and eight youths are currently participating in the programme in the state noting that the beneficiaries get paid immediately they turn in urine harvested from the rabbits.

Some of the beneficiaries who expressed joy over earning their first income in the business through what would have been described as waste however lamented challenges in accessing food and drugs for the rabbits.

Nigerians consume 80,000 terabytes of data monthly- NCC boss

Nigerians now consume 80,000 terabytes of data monthly. This is according to Prof. Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice-Chairman/ CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

“We’ve seen this trend of increase in data usage for quite a while associated with increase in online activities and, therefore, increase in demand for data by consumers.

“Therefore, we are aware about the difficulties that consumers are experiencing when it comes to data service condition.

“…One, we received a multitude of complaints about the way and manner data is being depleted quickly. Whether the data depletion is as a result of usage by the consumers or as a result of the allusion being made that mobile operators are shortchanging customers , it’s something that we take serious interest in and have conducted investigations in order to know the problem.

“We are doing this is because we are here to defend the interest of the consumers.

“We have put in place various measures…we always guide the consumer,” Prof Umar said in an interview.

U20 AFCON: Tunisia Outscore Morocco To Book a Semifinal spot

0

Tunisia U20 national team saw off their Moroccan counterparts (4-1) in penalty out after a barren draw in the regulation time to book a semifinal ticket against Uganda.

The Young Atlas Lions despite not conceding a single goal crashed out of the tournament losing in penalties.

Morocco returned to the Total U-20 tournament after missing the last seven editions and were considered as one of the favourite.

They topped Group C with seven points ahead of Ghana and Gambia.

While Tunisia finished second with four points in Group B.

The quarterfinal game between the Maghrebian countries lived up to expectations but Morocco where let down by the abysmal offensive play that lacked chances.

Both teams despite throwing in all their arsenals failed to score in regulation time and extra time in a tension soaked game

Morocco scored their first spot kick but lost the second and third which paved the way for the Young Carthage Eagles to claim the semi-final ticket.

Eurofins launches prescription-free COVID-19 test

0

Eurofins Scientific has announced on Monday the launch of a prescription-free at-home COVID-19 PCR test, as the French laboratories and diagnostics company eyed further growth.

The group, which has launched an array of COVID-19 testing products it sells to governments, airlines and transport hubs, said the nasal swab test could be ordered online for $99 or bought at pharmacies across the United States.

It specified that although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had authorised the at-home test under an emergency use authorisation, it had not cleared or approved the product.

“We are also working very closely with European authorities for the approval of similar direct-to-consumer products,” said the group’s chief executive Gilles Martin in a statement.

The group also reported 2020 results ahead of its own targets as it lowered its 2022 guidance and set out new goals for 2023.

Eurofins said its other businesses had been hit by lockdowns, social distancing and travel restrictions, particularly impacting its sales to clients in the travel industry, events, restaurants and clinical trials.

The group confirmed its forecasts for this year, but said results could be materially higher should COVID-19 testing continue at the current levels.

A level of coronavirus testing and market disruptions could well continue into 2022, it added, if vaccination programmes do not build sufficient immunity in many countries by summer, or if the more infectious variants reduce their effectiveness.

Netanyahu accuses Iran of attack on Israeli-owned ship

0

Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Iran of being behind last week’s blast on an Israeli-owned ship in the Gulf of Oman days after Israeli officials, including the defence minister, pointed fingers of blame at Tehran.

Netanyahu made the accusation in an interview that aired Monday with Israeli public broadcaster Kan, but offered no evidence for his claim.

The MV Helios Ray, a vehicle-carrier ship, was hit overnight on Friday by a blast above the waterline that a US official said ripped holes in both sides of its hull. The vessel docked at Dubai’s port for repairs on Sunday. It remains unclear what caused the blast.

Defence Minister, Benny Gantz said on Saturday that an initial assessment found Iran was responsible for the explosion, while the Israeli ambassador to the US and United Nations appeared to blame Tehran for the blast, which has revived security concerns in the region.

Israeli defence officials have flown to Dubai to investigate the incident, Haaretz newspaper reported.

When asked if Israel would retaliate, Netanyahu, a strident critic of Tehran’s nuclear programme, repeated previous statements about his determination to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

“Iran is the greatest enemy of Israel, I am determined to halt it. We are hitting it in the entire region,” the Israeli prime minister said.

Kan said the interview was recorded on Sunday night, before Syria accused Israel of carrying out missile attacks around southern Damascus.

Israeli media reports said the alleged air raids were on Iranian targets in response to the ship attack.

The Israeli military declined to comment.

Israel has struck hundreds of Iranian targets in Syria in recent years, and Netanyahu has repeatedly said Israel will not accept a permanent Iranian military presence in its neighbour.

Iran’s foreign ministry “strongly rejected” Netanyahu’s claim and said his recent remarks stem from his “obsessive” behaviour towards the country.

“The source of these allegations itself lacks credibility the most,” said Saeed Khatibzadeh, the foreign ministry’s spokesman, said in a press conference in Tehran on Monday.

Khatibzadeh also reiterated Iran’s stance that it never has and never will seek nuclear weapons.

Iran has also blamed Israel for a recent series of attacks, including a mysterious explosion last summer that destroyed an advanced centrifuge assembly plant at its Natanz nuclear facility and the killing of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, a top Iranian scientist who founded the country’s military nuclear programme 20 years ago.

Tehran has repeatedly promised to avenge Fakhrizadeh’s killing.

Iranian threats of retaliation have raised alarms in Israel following the country’s normalisation deals with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

African Swine Fever: Malaysia to cull 3,000 pigs

0

Malaysia plans to cull 3,000 wild and domestic pigs after an outbreak of African swine fever in wild boar and backyard pigs in the state of Sabah on Borneo island in mid-February.

The disease was detected in at least 300 pigs in three districts  Pitas, Kota Marudu and Beluran  after a reported case involving the death of a wild boar last month, according to a World Organisation for Animal Health alert issued. This was the first discovery of the disease in Malaysia, the alert said.

Twenty-two pigs have already been culled in efforts to curb the outbreak, said Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Jeffrey Kitingan in a statement.

“It is estimated that there are about 2,000 pigs in Pitas and about a thousand wild bearded pigs within a radius of 50 km (31 miles). All these animals will have to be culled,” said Kitingan, who is also the agriculture and fisheries minister.

African swine fever, which is deadly to pigs but harmless to humans, poses a threat to food stocks.

China, the world’s biggest pork producer, reported new variants of African swine fever last week, natural mutations in the virus that ravaged China’s pig herd during 2018 and 2019 and which continues to kill hogs.

Super Eagles call-up: Sadiq Umar strikes again

Sadiq Umar today enhanced his chances of getting a first-ever Super Eagles call-up after he scored his 13th goal for UD Almeria and also provided an assist in Spain.

Former Nigeria U23 star Umar made up for a missed penalty by scoring on 11 minutes to open the scores at home against Lugo.

He will go on to assist for his team’s fourth goal in the 75th minute.

Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has already mentioned the tall striker is being monitored by the national team scout and could get his maiden call-up for AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho in March.

The squad for the AFCON qualifiers will be announced soon.

Today’s win consolidated Almeria third place in the standings with 52 points, two points behind leaders Mallorca.

Iran insists US lifts sanctions to resume nuclear deal talks

0

Iran said on Monday that the United States should lift sanctions first if it wants to hold talks with Tehran to salvage the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

President Joe Biden has said Washington is ready for talks about both nations resuming compliance with the pact, under which Tehran secured an easing of sanctions by limiting its nuclear work. But each side wants the other to move first.

The West fears Iran wants to build nuclear weapons, while Tehran says that has never been its goal.

“President Joe Biden’s administration should change Trump’s maximum pressure policy towards Tehran … If they want talks with Iran, first they should lift sanctions,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said.

Washington said on Sunday it was disappointed by Tehran’s refusal to hold talks but was ready to “re-engage in meaningful diplomacy” and would consult with major powers.

While Iran has been demanding the lifting of U.S. sanctions first, Washington says Tehran must return to compliance with the deal, which Iran has been progressively breaching since 2019.

“The new U.S. administration’s refusal to return to the deal is a historic mistake,” Khatibzadeh said, saying Tehran would continue to work with the U.N. nuclear watchdog despite scaling back cooperation.
