2021 AFCON Countdown: Rohr rules out automatic shirts

0

The Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has ruled out automatic shirts for players switching their allegiance to Nigeria, saying he already has good players in place to prosecute upcoming next month’s AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho.

The German who returned to Nigeria over the weekend said he was happy with the fitness of players in their various clubs ahead of the AFCON qualifiers in March.

“We have a scouting team with my assistants and we see the games at the weekend; I am happy that the majority of the players are very fit because it is not easy to play in winter time in Europe with a lot of matches within a short time,” Rohr said .

He said: “Some of them are very fit and we have some new players in Germany, France and Austria and Czech Republic. I always have meetings with my technical team every Monday to assess what they monitored at the weekend.”

New players bidding
Speaking specifically on new players bidding to switch their allegiance for Nigeria other than their countries of birth, the former Bayern Munich defender said everything would be done under due process.

“It is good to scout for them and also speak with them if they want to switch,” noted the 67-year-old coach.

“Also such players have to write letters to FIFA; we have some players in view and for me .

“But this is not the best time to bring in new players; I hope we can find better players because we already have good players. No time before the next two matches,” he stated.

The former Bordeaux coach said he was happy that injured players like Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze would soon be back to fitness, even as he reckoned that Al-Shabab’s newly-signed Odion Ighalo as exclusively reported has a chance to return to the Super Eagles.

Rohr said: “I am very happy with his new contract in Saudi Arabia despite his age because he has to start thinking about the future. I hope he is regular in the club and if he is doing well he has a chance to play with the Super Eagles. But does he want to come back? That is the question. He will be helpful for the young players but firstly he has to play regularly in his new club.”

Meanwhile, Rohr has revealed that the team’s last AFCON qualifier against Lesotho may be played at the refurbished National Stadium in Lagos on March 30.

Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho struck deep into stoppage time to send Leicester City into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, on Wednesday.

Extra time loomed when Ihenacho was picked out at the far post from a corner and he headed home.

Both sides had goals ruled out within the space of a minute in the second half, Andi Zeqiri for Brighton and Cengiz Under for the hosts.

Leicester also suffered a blow when James Justin was carried off on a stretcher after jarring his knee.

Iheanacho’s late intervention, however, made sure it was Leicester who moved through and they were joined in the last eight by the Premier League’s bottom club Sheffield United who beat Championship side Bristol City 1-0.

The Gombe State Executive Council has approved the sum of 97 million, 413 thousand 736 naira for the compensation of 120 people, whose lands are being used for the erosion control project in the Gombe State University-Malam-Inna -Kaga-Rawal road.

Speaking with journalists soon after the meeting in Gombe, the Commissioner of Information and Culture, Mr. Ibrahim Alhassan Kwami, said those to be compensated were people whose lands and property are along the erosion sites and had to be used for the erosion control project

US to impose sanctions on Military leaders in Myanmar

0

United States President Joe Biden on Wednesday said he had approved an executive order for new sanctions on those responsible for the military coup d’etat in Myanmar and he repeated demands for the generals to give up power and free civilian leaders.

In televised remarks at the White House, Biden condemned the military’s takeover from the civilian-led government and its detention of the country’s elected leader, Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

“Today, I am announcing a series of actions that we are taking to begin imposing consequences on the leaders of the coup,” Biden said.

“The US government is taking steps to prevent the generals from improperly having access to the $1bn in Burmese government funds being held in the United States,” Biden said. (Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is sometimes still called by that name in the US).

In addition, Biden announced new direct sanctions against “the military leaders who directed the coup, their business interests as well as close family members”.

The US will announce a first round of sanctions this week and will impose export controls on Myanmar while still providing medical aid and humanitarian relief, the US president said.

Democratically elected leaders of Myanmar were detained by military forces under the command of Myanmar Senior General Min Aung Hlaing early on the morning of February 1.

Military authorities invalidated the results of Myanmar’s November election and imposed a nationwide state of emergency marked by curfews in Myanmar’s two biggest cities.

Large public protests have broken out in Myanmar’s capital of Naypyidaw and its largest city, Yangon, as thousands of protesters have taken to the streets.

“The people of Burma [Myanmar] are making their voices heard and the world is watching. We’ll be ready to impose additional measures, and we’ll continue to work with our international partners to urge other nations to join us in these efforts,” Biden said.

International concern has been rising about the military coup in Myanmar. The United Nations Security Council issued a statement on February 4 “expressing deep concern at the declaration of the state of emergency imposed in Myanmar by the military”.

Biden on February 2 had called for the military coup’s leaders to relinquish control and free detained political leaders, and he threatened to re-impose sanctions on those responsible for the coup.

Biden has bipartisan support among Republicans and Democrats in the US Congress for the sanctions. Biden said he has consulted with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell on steps the US should take.

“It’s time to follow up with meaningful costs on those who aid and abet the suffocation of Burmese democracy,” McConnell said.

Democrats argue Trump planted seed of Capitol riot with false election claims

0

Democrats on Wednesday argued Donald Trump planted the seeds for the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol long before Jan. 6 with false claims that the 2020 election was stolen, and said lawmakers had an obligation to hold the former president accountable.

The House of Representatives has charged Trump, a Republican, with inciting an insurrection by exhorting thousands of supporters to march on the Capitol on the day Congress was gathered to certify Democrat Joe Biden’s electoral victory.

The rioters stormed the building, sending lawmakers into hiding and leaving five people dead, including a police officer.

The nine Democratic House managers prosecuting the case for impeachment, an uphill task in a narrowly divided Senate, said on Wednesday the incitement started long before Jan. 6.

“Trump realized last spring that he could lose the November election and began planting seeds of anger among his supporters by saying he could lose only if it was stolen,” said Representative Joseph Neguse.

Representative Joaquin Castro cited what he called blatant acts of political intimidation against election workers in states Trump was losing.

In Philadelphia, Atlanta and Milwaukee, Castro said, Trump’s supporters tried to use armed force to disrupt the counting of votes.

Trump’s actions threatened a hallmark of American democracy, the peaceful transfer of power, the Democratic managers said.

Democrats face long odds to secure a conviction, which could lead to a vote barring Trump from seeking public office again.

A two-thirds majority in the Senate must vote to convict, which means at least 17 Republicans would have to defy Trump’s still-potent popularity among Republican voters.

Republican Senator Ron Johnson, a Trump ally, told reporters at a break that the proceedings would become “pretty tedious.”

On Tuesday, just six out of 50 Republican senators broke with their caucus to vote that the trial could move ahead even though Trump’s term ended on Jan. 20.

The trial in the Senate is not the only probe Trump faces after leaving the White House and losing the presidential protections that shielded him from prosecution.

Prosecutors in Georgia’s biggest county have opened a criminal investigation into Trump’s attempts to influence the state’s election results after he was recorded in a Jan. 2 phone call pressuring the Secretary of State to “find” enough votes to overturn his Georgia loss.

Trump’s lawyers, who will have 16 hours to deliver their side of the argument after the House managers are finished, argue that the former president’s rhetoric is protected by the First Amendment’s guarantee of free speech, and that the individuals who breached the Capitol were responsible for their own criminal behavior.

They also say the trial is politically motivated.

“We are really here because the majority in the House of Representatives does not want to face Donald Trump as a political rival in the future,” Bruce Castor, one of Trump’s lawyers, told senators on Tuesday.

The Senate trial could conclude as early as Saturday or Sunday, according to a senior Senate aide.

Some Democrats had expressed concern that a prolonged trial could delay progress on Biden’s agenda, including a proposed $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package.

Biden was not planning to watch the trial, the White House said. Asked on Tuesday about the proceedings, the president said he was focused on his own job.

Trump is the first U.S. president to be impeached twice. His first impeachment trial, which stemmed from his efforts to pressure Ukraine to investigate Biden, ended in an acquittal a year ago in what was then a Republican-controlled Senate.

No U.S. president has ever been removed from office via impeachment. Bill Clinton was impeached in 1998 and Andrew Johnson in 1868 but they also were acquitted.

Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 rather than face impeachment over the Watergate scandal.
