Chad to deploy troops to tackle jihadists on borders

0

Chad’s President Idriss Déby says he is deploying soldiers to the border with Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso as G5 Sahel countries meet to discuss security in the region.

Chad has in the past said it would deploy in the “three border zone” but did not.

The Sahel region heads of state are meeting in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, and French President, Emmanuel Macron will join the meeting via video link.

International support
President Déby has called for more international support to the Sahel countries in their fight against extremists.

He said poverty in the region had made it easier for young people to be recruited by extremists and said development funds would help alleviate it.

France has 5,100 troops in the Sahel region which has been a front line in the war against Islamist militancy for almost a decade.

Militants from the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM), which is linked to al-Qaeda, have been carrying out attacks.

NFF moves to strengthen quality of Nigeria’s Leagues

0

The leadership of Nigeria’s football has moved to sustain the gains so far made in the various leagues and improve on them.

Following complaints from stakeholders on some welfare issues capable of disrupting the topflight league in particular, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Mr Amaju Pinnick has presided over a meeting to chart a more robust course for the various leagues including; the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), Nigeria National League (NNL), Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) and the Nigeria Nationwide League One (League One).

Although full details of the moves made by the NFF’s leadership to end the lingering non- settlement of officials’ indemnities were not disclosed, the meeting deliberated on niggling issues around the League particularly welfare of officials and resolved to tackle matters head-on in the interest of the domestic game.

Pinnick said he was delighted with the broadcast and quality of production of Nigeria Professional Football League matches on the Nigeria Television Authority and the NPFL.TV since the commencement of the new season.

He said the Federation was determined that no factor would be allowed to derail the present gains as the NPFL season enters Week 10, and the NNL and NWFL matches also trudge on.

“We are all impressed with the matches being on television and the special app (NPFL.TV) and have enjoyed the quality of production which compares to the very best anywhere.

“However, it is time to look critically at certain niggling factors and ensure we tackle them decisively in order not to erode the gains we have been able to make.

“We must keep at what we are doing, maintain the standard and even strive for improvement where possible, and we can be sure that we will reap the gains in the coming seasons,” Pinnick stressed.

The NFF supremo who is gunning for a seat in the 37-member FIFA Council also promised that the Federation would do anything within its capacity to ensure that standard of officiating continues to improve, while safety, security and medical issues are given the utmost attention and seriousness.

Consensus
There was a consensus at the meeting that the sustainability of good officiating and broadcast of the matches will solve most of the problems associated with the domestic game in previous years.

Okonjo-Iweala will boost trade cooperation globally – Nigerian Trade Union

The Nigerian Union of Traders in Ghana (NUTAG), said the emergence of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the Director-General (DG) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) would boost trade cooperation around the world.

The President of the union, Mr  Chukwuemeka Nnaji, stated this during a telephone conversation with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. Okonjo-Iweala emerged as the unanimous choice for the position of DG, becoming the trade body’s first female and first African leader.

Nnaji said: “We join Nigeria’s business community in the diaspora to congratulate the Lioness of Africa as the new DG of the WTO. We are so encouraged that she sailed through, notwithstanding numerous challenges she had to dismantle on her way, but in the end, she successfully reached the ultimate expectation.

“We are so convinced that Okonjo-Iweala will do very well, her track records have shown that she has all it takes to move WTO forward.

“The major task now is how to deal with China and the United States of America trade issues, which have so far held the world trade cooperation to a standstill.

“We commend her competence and skill in negotiation which she applied during her tenure as Minister of Finance and also as Economic manager in Nigeria, we believe she will make a positive impact as DG of WTO.”

Further reports state that Okonjo-Iweala’s confirmation was an outcome of WTO’s 164 members’ unanimous selection which makes her the successor to Roberto Azevêdo, who left office on 31 August 2020. Okonjo-Iweala’s term, which is renewable, will expire on 31 August 2025.

Speaking at a briefing, the new DG said she was ready to face the business on the ground and tackle the challenges of the WTO.

Rivers United defender confident of bouncing back against Enyimba

0

Rivers United defender, Ifeanyi Anaemena, is confident they will overturn Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Enyimba in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup and book a place in the group stage.

Stanley Eguma side enjoyed a lot of possession and created a handful of chances, but they were unable to find a way past Enyimba goalkeeper, John Noble.

They were eventually undone by a goal from Cyril Olisema, which handed the home side a vital first-leg victory.

He said, “We did play very well against Enyimba but we lost narrowly.

“Enyimba are a good side and have a strong pedigree in Africa. We’ve lost in their home and we are back in Port Harcourt to prepare and make sure that we reverse the 1-0 deficit.

“This is football, things can still go either way. We know Enyimba have the advantage, but there is every possibility that we can qualify.”

SGF cautions Adamawa residents on complacency in observing Coivd-19 Protocols

0

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, has called on the people of Adamawa State to take the issue of the Coronavirus seriously by adhering strictly to the measures put in place to prevent its spread.

Mr. Mustapha made the call in Yola, during the commissioning and handing over of a complete road/Storm Drainage and 100 Solar Street Lights at the Federal College of Education, Yola, Adamawa State.

The SGF said members of the public should continuously put on face masks, maintain social distancing and avoid congregations.

“If it is not necessary, don’t travel. As of today, the world has witnessed over a hundred million infections, with over 2.5 million deaths. So, it is not a joke. It’s real and for every number of those 2.5 million deaths, you can place a face and a name to those numbers, depending on where you are located. In Nigeria, we have exceeded about a hundred and 40 something thousand. We have recorded over 1, 600 plus deaths,” Mr. Mustapha said.

He said, although the Federal Government was working hard to procure the Covid-19 Vaccine, the public should in the meantime use the available measures as weapons to fight and restrict the transmission of the disease before the vaccines arrived in the country.

According to the SGF, Adamawa residents should religiously observe the protocols, so that when the vaccine finally arrives the country, it should meet all alive.

Change of attitude
He said he expected a change of attitude towards maintaining the laid down protocols on the containment of the virus, because he believed that the cooperation of the people would determine the lifespan of the pandemic in the state.

The SGF, while officially handing over the project to the School in Yola, also called on its authorities to ensure the prevention of indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage channels and the unnecessary cutting of the pavements and the Asphalted road.

“It is the responsibility of the college community to own and maintain the project to ensure its sustainability,” the SGF said.

Intervention in executing
Responding on behalf of the Adamawa State Governor, the Commissioner of Works & Energy Development, Alhaji Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and Mr. Adamu Atiku Abubakar commended the Federal Government for its intervention in executing some ecological and road projects in the state, one of which was the project in the FCE.

Mr. Abubakar highlighted the challenges of flooding in the state, which was prone to severe flooding, sometimes worsened by the annual release of water by the Lagdo Dam in the Republic of Cameroon, which often left in its wake devastation on lives and property of the people.

He said the challenge of flooding cut across all local government areas of the state, even though the state governments had always done their best to tackle the issues, but was not enough, hence the plea for more Federal Government interventions in constructing storm water drainages.

“…Particularly from the Airport fence to Bachure that leads to Damilu, then Jambutu and Gero, totalling about 5 kilometres. Secondly, the storm water drainage from Upper NEPA to National Supply, to Mokolo Street, down to Gimba Street that lead us to behind the Shopping Complex, to new Nigeria and then Jimeta Bypass, totalling 3 kilometres, amongst other areas that require such intervention,”  Mr. Abubakar said.

He hoped similar gestures would be extended to other parts of the state that required such interventions.
