Electricity meters: Government warns companies against selling

0

By Olubunmi Osoteku, Ibadan

The Nigerian Government has warned electricity companies and their representatives not to sell the meters planned to be rolled out for the mass metering initiative, noting that culprits would be made to face the wrath of the law.

This  comes as the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC assured its customers that it was already working on addressing banding issues that the tariff regime brought up.

The stakeholders spoke in Ibadan, on Wednesday, during an FGN/NLC-TUC Ad-hoc Committee Electricity Tarriff parley with customers, consumers and relevant stakeholders of the electricity sector, chaired by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo.

Sounding the note of warning, the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Infrastructure, Mr Ahmed Zakari, said the government, through the regulator’s direct order, had made it clear that with the intervention of the Ministry of Power, the meters are to be provided to Nigerians at no cost.

He said, “Even for meters that would be paid for through the MAP, there is a directive from the regulator to the discos that they need to find a way to reimburse citizens over time. It may not be immediate but over time.”

“If we find any discos or disco representatives selling these meters or exploiting Nigerians to be able to get meters by paying, we will take the full measures of the law against the regulator and we will charge such to the full extent of the law,” Zakari asserted.

According to Zakari, the president had mandated that meters must be free and must come from the local manufacturers so as to create jobs and revive the industry, noting that the government would not take any games from the discos, meter assemblers or manufacturers.

The Chairman of the Committee, Festus Keyamo, said the Committee had been working to achieve an equilibrium figure that would reflect the true price and value for the service of the electricity consumed.

Keyamo stated that the intention of the government was to ensure that consumers were not strangulated by unnecessary exploitative tendencies of discos and that discos were kept afloat, so they would deliver service to the Nigerian people and also attract investors.

He said, “We are not saying service delivery will automatically mean price increase. We are only saying there is an acceptable figure. That figure is the equilibrium and we are looking for that equilibrium that will make everybody happy. And that means that the discos can be kept afloat to deliver services without having to go and look for money to subsidise their operations.”

Keyamo explained that the objective of the Committee is that the ordinary man is not cheated in the sense that the price is not exploitative and the consumer pays the actual price of the service, which is why it is called service reflective tariff.

He assured that at the end of the day whatever consensus reached going forward on electricity would be an agreement between government and labour.

The IBEDC acting Managing Director, Mr John Ayodele, said the issue of banding, which is quite expensive to classify, was being fine-tuned, highlighting some of the teething problems the company had been working on to ensure that banding was achieved.

Some of the electricity consumers at the event identified estimated billings and lack of meters as foremost challenges bedeviling the sector.

In their separate remarks, NLC representative, Comrade Joe Ajero and his TUC counterpart, Dr Chris Okonkwo, said the committee would address issues raised by the consumers and ensure that issues on electricity tariff are resolved without breakdown of peace.

Former French President Giscard d’Estaing dies at 94

0

Former French President Valery Giscard d’Estaing, a key architect of European integration in the early 1970s, has died at the age of 94 after contracting COVID-19.

Giscard, who was France’s leader from 1974 to 1981, had recently been hospitalised in Tours, in western France. He died at his family home nearby after suffering from complications linked to the virus.

He had been admitted to hospital in September with respiratory complications and was hospitalised again in mid-November.

Giscard was known for steering a modernisation of French society during his presidency, including allowing divorce by mutual consent and legalising abortion, and was one of the architects of European integration.

Elected president at 48, he came to power after Charles de Gaulle’s long rule, seeking to liberalise the economy and social attitudes and credited with launching major projects including France’s high-speed TGV train network.

He lost his re-election bid, however, to Socialist Francois Mitterrand, in the aftermath of the global economic downturn of the 1970s.

Tributes poured in across the political spectrum in France. Former President Nicolas Sarkozy said Giscard had “worked his whole life to reinforce relations between European nations.”

The head of President Emmanuel Macron’s ruling party in parliament, Christophe Castaner, said: “His modern and resolutely progressive policies … will long mark his legacy.”

In Europe, he forged a close relationship with former West German chancellor Helmut Schmidt and together they laid the foundations for the euro single currency, setting up the European Monetary System.

He was also an ardent Anglophile, and took office a year after Britain joined the European Economic Community.

Britain’s former Europe minister in the early 2000s, Denis McShane, in a statement on Twitter, called him a “big politician” who changed Europe.

Several other tributes has poured extolling the virtues of the late former French President Valery Giscard d’Estaing.

Nigeria empowers 17,000 Youths in Animal Husbandry

By Ene Okwanihe, Abuja

The National Agricultural Land Development Authority NALDA has commenced the implementation of the National Young Farmers Scheme by empowering seventeen thousand youth in Animal Husbandry.

The Executive Secretary and CEO of NALDA, Prince Paul Ikonne disclosed this at a media briefing in Abuja Nigeria’s capital.

Prince Ikonne said the first phase of the scheme which is Animal husbandry has 17,000 youth drawn from Imo, Abia, Cross River and Oyo states receiving Rabbits to start rabbit farms that have the potential of yielding an average profit of one hundred thousand naira monthly.

While highlighting the benefits of Rabbit farming Prince Ikonne said though rabbit farming is not popular in Nigeria, the meat, Hyde, urine and excrement are in high demands.

“A lot of people don’t know the potentials, the benefits and the money they can make from rearing rabbit. Rabbit has an entire value chain; nothing is a waste when farming rabbit. From the meat, the hide, which is the skin, the dunks and the urine, they are all money-making machine”

Prince Ikonne stated that the scheme was a partnership between the government and the farmers as the government would serve as off-takers.

He noted that aside the nutritional value of the meat which is white meat, the urine and the dunk is a good source of fertilisers as they would collect them and make it available to people in need of it for fertilisers.

On the procedure of collecting the urine and dunk, he said the rabbit cages provided to the youths was designed in such a way that it automatically collects the dunks and urine.

On income generation he said, “The program is very simple, from the first day the farmer start rearing rabbits, they start making money from that day, from the collection of the urine, to the collection of the dungs which will be used as fertilizer, their money will keep accumulating, at the end of the month, we’ll pay them based on the liters and kilogram of what they have submitted to NALDA office at their various states before the off-taker takes it,” he explained.

“you can see that the benefits of rearing rabbits, before we go into the processing the sale of the animal itself is another means of income, the meat is one of the best meat because it’s white meat and it’s good for those that are having cholesterol issues, that also will be source of income, then the hide which is the skin is also in high demand for designers” he further explained

The Executive Secretary further explained that Rabbit farms are easy to run as it does not involve much modality.

“The beauty about this is that it doesn’t have much hazard, it doesn’t require so much, rabbit virtually eats everything and it doesn’t require too much space, so you can farm it at the smallest space you have in your house whether you are a landlord or a tenant and it doesn’t litter the environment”

For interested persons, Prince Ikonne called on youth across the country to key into the scheme by applying on the agencies official website www.nalda.ng and since the program was community-based, interested persons could also visit NALDA offices in the various states to apply.
