0

The National Sports Commission (NSC), under the leadership of chairman, Shehu Dikko and Director General, Bukola Olopade, opened the Technical Session of the 2nd National Council on Sports in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria.

The 2nd National Council on Sports was been described as platform to lay the groundwork for major policy decisions geared towards redefining sports development in Nigeria.

The Director General Olopade, made the remark while declaring open the first technical session in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, southern Nigeria.

Olopade, who further described the session as “critical to shaping the future of sports in the country,” noted that the resolutions reached would guide reforms under the Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He stated that sports was placed at the heart of youth development, job creation, unity and national pride, reiterating the commission’s resolve to chart a new direction through the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE).

“This technical session sets the foundation for the decisions and recommendations that will shape the future of sports development in Nigeria,” Olopade said.

“We are implementing reforms in governance, athlete welfare, infrastructure upgrade and sports commercialisation to ensure the sector can fully contribute to national growth.”

Highlighting achievements recorded over the past year, the NSC boss pointed to improved performances by Nigerian athletes on the international stage, expansion of grassroots sports, upgrades of key facilities and renewed private-sector partnerships.

He hinted that the policy focus for 2025 would include sports as an engine of economic growth, a tool for unity, a platform for diplomacy and a vehicle for community integration.

“Together, we will build a sports sector worthy of Nigeria’s greatness,” he told delegates.

In a goodwill message, the National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Isaiah Benjamin, described the council meeting as “very important”.

Benjamin noted that the meeting  was a convergence of Commissioners and Directors for Sports from the 36 States of the federation as well as Sports officers in security agencies.

“This is an opportunity that has brought all the Directors of Sports together and in the coming days, Commissioners for Sports from the various states will also be on ground,” Benjamin added.

While urging authorities to sustain their support for sports journalists nationwide, the SWAN President said that discussions at the technical session were already pointing in the right direction and expressed optimism about the outcome.

“All the issues being discussed, if properly implemented, will help to galvanise and improve our sporting sector going forward,” he said.

“At the end of this meeting, a communiqué will be issued capturing decisions taken and from what I have listened to so far, it is going to be good for the nation if implemented.”

The forum, after a brief opening ceremony, went into a prolonged and interactive technical session behind closed doors.

Arsenal beat Bayern Munich 3-1 to maintain its 100% record in this season’s UEFA Champions League, sending Mikel Arteta’s side clear at the top of the group on Wednesday, at the Emirates Stadium in London, England.

Defender Jurrien Timber headed Arsenal in front from a corner after 22 minutes. However, the lead lasted only 10 minutes though as Bayern responded when teenager Lennart Karl equalised for the six-time European champions before halftime.

Arsenal dominated the second half and were reward in the 69th minute when Riccardo Calafiori fired in a cross from the left that fellow substitute Noni Madueke turned in for his first goal since joining from Chelsea.

Eight minutes later Neuer had a moment to forget when he charged out of his goal trying to cut out Eberechi Eze’s pass.

But the goalkeeper got nowhere near the ball and Gabriel Martinelli was left with the simple task of shooting into an empty net.

It proved a quiet return to north London for prolific Bayern striker Harry Kane as his side suffered their first defeat of the season in all competitions.

With Inter Milan losing, Arsenal are now the only team in the competition with a maximum 15 points and look all but assured of a place in the last 16.

“We went man to man with them in the second half and I thought tonight we were outstanding,” Declan Rice, who covered every blade of grass in midfield, said. “The manager is so happy. It was a special European night.”

Bayern slipped to third as one of four clubs on 12 points although with home games against Sporting and Union Saint-Gilloise next they are in good shape to seal a top-eight spot.

“I have to congratulate Arsenal, in the end it was a deserved win for them,” Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said.

“The first half I felt we could edge it but we allowed them to control the second half.”

World Youth Table Tennis Championship: Nigeria Protests Visa Denial

0

The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), has petitioned the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) after its players were denied visas for the World Youth Championships in Romania.

The refusal has alarmed Nigeria’s table tennis community, with officials warning on Wednesday it threatens the country’s place in a major global youth competition.

NTTF President, Adesoji Tayo, condemned the decision, calling it “a violation of international sportsmanship, inclusivity and fair participation”.

President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Adesoji Tayo.

He said the reasons given for the denial were “unjust, discriminatory and contrary to the spirit of unity which international sport should foster”.

He noted that weeks of intensive preparation had been wasted, with the setback dampening morale and causing financial losses for the federation.

Nigeria had qualified to represent Africa in the boys’ U-19 and U-15 team events after winning titles at the African Youth Championships.

Tayo said the NTTF “will not be responsible for any penalties or costs” linked to accommodation or hospitality bookings following the team’s forced withdrawal.

He urged the ITTF to intervene urgently, warning that the incident had disrupted Nigeria’s plans to develop another generation of world-class players.

Nihotour Reschedules Gastronomy Oriki Royal Festival

The National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (Nihotour) has announced that its highly anticipated Gastronomy Oriki Royal Festival, initially billed for December 6, has been postponed to a later date, following consultations with key local and international partners.

Described as an “Olympic gastronomy event,” the festival aims to break a Guinness World Record by hosting the world’s longest dining table, showcasing an elaborate royal ambience and diverse culinary offerings from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The Director General of NIHOTOUR, Aare Abisoye Fagade, said “the festival is designed to be an iconic showcase of Nigeria’s heritage, wellness culture, and culinary sophistication. According to him, the event cannot be rushed, as every detail must meet global standards.”

“This is not just an ordinary gastronomy event; it is a deliberate and strategic Nigerian culinary brand statement,” Fagade said.

He said; “Every element from the well appointed royal-themed table to the array of dishes and appetisers, and from the chefs to the waiters in colourful Nigerian attire—must align with Guinness World Record regulations. It is a huge task, and we want everything in perfect order before inviting Nigerians and the world to the table.”

The Director General added that “the festival would also deepen research into the health benefits of Nigerian cuisine, noting that food should not only excite the taste buds but also promote wellness and happiness.”

NIHITOUR’s Director of Planning, Mr Victor Salako, who also serves as the Chairman of the Planning Committee for the event, confirmed that the new date likely in the first quarter of the new year will be announced once alignments with all partner expectations are completed.

He noted that Guinness World Records has already granted preliminary approval for the planned dining experience.

“Like the Director General has emphasised, our approach is intentional, sensitive, and deeply committed to offering the world a unique dining experience,” Salako said.

“We envision Nigerians and international visitors seated across an exceptionally long table used as a dining table, sharing ideas and experiences about our food and hospitality. Achieving this requires enormous planning and precision, and we are prepared to fix a new date as soon as Guinness World Records, our respected umpires, align with our new date propositions,” he explained.

Anambra Governor’s Wife Advocates Practical Solutions to Fight GBV

0

The wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Dr Nonye Soludo has called for sustained collective action, practical solutions, and stronger social systems to eliminate gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria and around the World.

Mrs Soludo, who is founder of the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative, delivered the message in a statement marking the 2025 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November.

The day also begins the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

She stressed that efforts to end GBV must move beyond symbolic gestures, saying the global campaign “demands more than words or hashtags.”

According to her, meaningful progress requires decisive measures, narrative change, and a stronger commitment to protecting women and girls in every sphere of society.

The Governor’s wife said;  “In a world where many women and girls still feel unsafe within institutions designed to nurture and support them, we must move beyond rhetoric to real action.

“Eliminating gender-based discrimination is everyone’s responsibility, at home, in schools, workplaces, places of worship, and everywhere human relationships exist. Every woman deserves to be valued, protected, and empowered to flourish.”

Empowering Women

Mrs. Soludo underscored the importance of empowering women and girls through quality education, accessible healthcare, employment creation, and strengthened social institutions.

These interventions, she said, “are critical to preventing violence and ensuring equal opportunities.”

A key part of the campaign, she noted, is breaking the culture of silence surrounding abuse.

Mrs. Soludo urged survivors and communities to speak out, report incidents to appropriate authorities, and support victims seeking help.

The First Lady explained that ”the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has recognised these challenges and is implementing transformative policies aimed at improving safety, inclusion, and opportunity for women and girls across Anambra State.”

“It is truly time to find practical solutions and change the narrative for good,” she said, reaffirming that GBV can be eradicated if the right concerns are raised and decisive measures are taken.

Kano Deputy Governor Urges Media to Strengthen Watchdog Role

0

The Nigerian media has been urged to strengthen its watchdog role as the country navigates one of the most challenging periods in its history.

Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo made the appeal while receiving members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kano Correspondents Chapel.

Gwarzo said “the press must remain alert, courageous, and proactive in highlighting the country’s security situation.”

He stressed that journalists carry a national responsibility to consistently draw government attention to any issue affecting citizens across Nigeria.

“The media must wake up to be more vigilant and dedicated in appraising the challenges facing our nation. Nigeria is grappling with huge security problems, and journalists must do more to ensure the government confronts these threats head-on,” the Deputy Governor said.

Gwarzo expressed concern over the country’s slow adoption of modern technology in tackling insecurity, noting that criminal groups, including bandits, were increasingly using sophisticated tools to carry out attacks.

While other nations deploy advanced technology to address security challenges, Nigeria is lagging behind. Bandits are using sophisticated systems, yet government responses lack the same technological strength. The media should mount pressure to ensure authorities act decisively,”  he said.

Gwarzo warned that widespread fear has become a national reality, with citizens travelling or going about their daily lives uncertain of what may happen next.

He said this reinforces the need for journalists especially correspondents across the states to amplify public concerns and hold leaders accountable.

“It is our collective responsibility to confront these challenges. The media remains a strong partner, and together we can safeguard our communities,” he said.

The Deputy Governor commended the Kano NUJ Correspondents Chapel for maintaining a constructive relationship with the state government.

Chairman of the Chapel, Murtala Adewale, pledged continued collaboration while upholding the principles of responsible journalism for the good of the state and the country at large.

Unilorin VC Urges National Unity in Nigeria

0

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, North Central Nigeria, Professor Wahab Egbewole, has called for a united national front against insecurity in Nigeria.

Professor Egbewole made the call during a press briefing at the University Auditorium , as part of activities marking the University’s 50th anniversary.

The VC said the celebration was taking place “at a defining moment in Nigeria’s history,” with renewed threats from terrorists and kidnappers across the country, including Kwara State.

He cited recent remarks by U.S. President, Donald Trump threatening to visit Nigeria “guns-a-blazing”, noting that Nigeria must welcome international support but reject actions that undermine the nation’s sovereignty.

Professor Egbewole emphasised that unity across ethnic, religious, and political divides was crucial to tackling insecurity.

He urged Nigerians to support the government and security agencies to combat crime.

Professor Egbewole urged Nigerians to put ethnic, religious, and political differences aside to save the country from recurrent origins of violence.

He said all hands must be on deck to ensure the success of the Nigerian project, saying we should all say NO to all forms of extremism across religious, ethnic and political fault lines that define the nation.

According to him, while partnership with world powers is welcome in defeating the monsters of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity ravaging Nigeria, to which Nigerians, regardless of sectional or sectarian orientations, are victims and casualties, it is another thing entirely for the sovereignty of Nigeria to be compromised, a violation of international law.

He said; “It is in this regard that I urge the American government to assist the Nigerian government with technology and equipment, both software and hardware, to defeat the monsters that make our lives ‘nasty, brutish and short.’

According to him, “if you are emotionally attached to your tribe, religion or political leaning to the point that truth and justice become secondary considerations, your education is useless. Your exposure is useless, if you cannot reason beyond petty sentiments, you are a liability to mankind,” he said quoting former Nigerian Senate President, Chuba Okadigbo.
