Nigeria Partners With FAO To Enhance Food Security In Nigeria.

The Nigerian Government, through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, has reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to boosting food security through strategic partnerships with development agencies, aimed at encouraging increased investment in food production across the country.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, re-emphasised this when the newly appointed Country Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to Nigeria, Dr.Gadain Hussein, and his delegation paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Abuja.

Prof. Utsev emphasized President Tinubu’s strong commitment to enhancing food production in the country, recalling that these efforts inspired the declaration of a State of Emergency on Food Security and the administration’s sustained drive to attract investment in various aspects of agriculture and the food value chain
.

He assured the delegation of the Ministry’s readiness, through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, to collaborate fully with FAO in advancing food production in Nigeria in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda and the mandate of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.

The Minister added that the FAO’s Hand-in-Hand Initiative and the proposed Investment Summit coming up in Abuja will serve as a veritable platform to unite investors and stakeholders to accelerate food security efforts nationwide.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Richard Pheelangwah, advised FAO to work closely with the Ministry to ensure the achievement of the Food Security Mandate of President Tinubu’s administration for the benefit of Nigerians.

Earlier, Dr. Hussein informed the Minister of the upcoming FAO Hand-in-Hand Initiative for the Sahel, themed “Investment in Irrigation and Water Resources”, scheduled for 16–18 September 2025 in Abuja. He highlighted the crucial role the Ministry will play in the forum, noting that agriculture consumes nearly 90% of available water resources.

He explained that the forum will provide opportunities for strategy development and collaboration in FAO’s intervention areas, including investments through grants, loans, and capacity building.

Dr. Hussein added that it will also serve as a platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and exchange of experiences.

While underscoring the importance of Public-Private Partnerships in crops, livestock, forestry, biodiversity, climate change, and food sustainability, he proposed the formation of a technical committee with the Ministry to develop a policy framework for strategic collaboration.

Present at the meeting were the Director of Irrigation and Drainage, Mrs. Esther Oyeronke Oluniyi, and Deputy Director, Irrigation & Drainage Department and FAO Desk Officer in the Ministry, Engineer Hauwa Sadique Muhammed.

Senegal Prime Minister Unveils Economic Recovery Plan

0

PM Sonko reveals essential measures to enhance the economy: Taxes on online gaming, tobacco, and an increase in the age limit for imported vehicles.

The Senegalese government has unveiled a comprehensive economic recovery plan aimed at strengthening public finances and revitalizing the national economy.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko presented the measures during a high-profile announcement, outlining key fiscal reforms expected to generate hundreds of billions of FCFA.

One of the plan’s pillars is the regularization of contracts at Senelec, Senegal’s national electricity company, with a focus on combating technical fraud.

The government estimates this measure alone could recover over 90 billion FCFA in lost revenue.

Additionally, the Prime Minister directed the Minister of Communication and Telecommunications to introduce fees for the audio-visual sector, including standardized rates for advertisements and digital services.

To further boost state revenue, the government plans to tax online gaming and increase tobacco taxes, measures projected to yield over 100 billion FCFA.

The taxation of digital advertisements is also expected to contribute significantly to public funds.

In a move to support the Senegalese diaspora, the government will raise the age limit for importing passenger vehicles, addressing long-standing demands from overseas citizens.

This policy aims to stimulate economic activity while catering to expatriate needs.

Prime Minister Sonko emphasized that these reforms will enhance savings and stabilize public finances.

He urged citizens to back the initiatives, stating, “These measures are crucial for our economic revival. With collective effort, we can secure a stronger future for Senegal.”

The plan marks a decisive step in Senegal’s post-pandemic recovery, targeting inefficiencies while fostering growth.

If successfully implemented, it could set a precedent for fiscal reform in West Africa.

African Union Leads Eastern Congo Peace Initiative

0

African leaders resolved to have one Africa-led peace initiative to address the conflict in eastern Congo.

During a meeting with representatives from the African Union and member states to discuss the security crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, William Ruto of Kenya and President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe led resolutions to merge the mediation and secretariat structures of the EAC (East African Community), SADC (Southern African Development Community), and African Union into a unified effort led by the AU in Addis Ababa.

Ruto told the meeting that it was a, “Turning point.

“There is now one African-led process that brings on board all the other initiatives: Nairobi, Luanda and any other initiative into one coherent process on the situation in Eastern DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo).

“There is a humanitarian situation, there is a serious security situation and instability that not only affects Eastern DRC, not only affects DRC and Rwanda but also affects our region,” he said.

In July, Congo and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels signed a declaration of principles for a permanent ceasefire in eastern Congo, where ethnic tensions and quest for rich minerals have resulted in one of Africa’s longest conflicts with thousands killed this year.

The African Union called the signing, facilitated by Qatar, a “major milestone” in peace efforts.

Another peace deal brokered by the United States was signed at the State Department, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio standing between the foreign ministers of Rwanda and Congo. Rubio called it “an important moment after 30 years of war.”

M23 is the most prominent armed group in the conflict in eastern Congo, and its major advance early this year resulted in thousands of deaths and 7 million people displaced.

Gusau/Ahlan Cup: Nasarawa United Claims 5-0 Against SI14

0

The 4th edition of the annual Gusau/Ahlan Cup Preseason Football Tournament kicked-offs on a bright note, with the Nasarawa United trashing visibly dominated Si14 FC 5-0.

Nasarawa United began their onslaught against the Keffi-based Nationwide League One side in the 21st minute, when Chidera Nduka perfectly struck his free-kick that beat the wall and goalkeeper, Ahmed Abubakar.

Eleven minutes later, the NPFL side increased their goal tally to 2-0 with left back, Mubarak Hussaini, driving a ferocious shot into the roof of the net. Both sides returned to their changing rooms with scoreline in favour of the Solid Miners.

A minute into the second half, United made matters worse for their opponents as Omolayo Abiodun buried the ball past the grasp of the goalkeeper to take the goal advantage to 3-0. While SI14 were trying to regroup, disaster struck again, with Umar Adah tailoring his effort into the back of the net to bring score to 4-0.

United’s opponents would not go down without a fight. Ibrahim Ndala and Mustapha Olasunkami both called United’s goalkeeper, Ameh Godwin, into forced saves. However, the straw that broke the opponents’ backs came off their own central defender, Tochukwu Miracle, who bizarrely turned the ball into his own net in the 81st minute.

5-0 was the full-time score against Si14 as the Solid Miners signposted their title-winning intention with a massive victory, and tentatively topping their Group with three points.

Both teams will know their next opponents in the coming days.

NIS Issues Advisory on Proper Use of U.S Visas

0

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued an advisory to citizens holding United States visas, warning against misuse and violation of visa terms following concerns raised by the U.S. government over visa abuse.

In an official statement signed by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Akinlabi Akinsola, the Service advised all visa holders to strictly adhere to the purpose stated in their U.S. visa applications.

“Applicants are reminded that security screening by U.S. authorities continues beyond initial entry. Any violation of immigration or other laws may result in visa revocation or deportation,” the Service stated.

Akinsola warned that breaches of visa conditions—including overstaying—could attract severe penalties such as removal from the U.S. and permanent ineligibility for future travel, adding that the U.S. remains committed to secure and transparent visa processes.

The NIS further stressed that Nigerian students in the U.S. must remain in active study, warning that “withdrawal, absenteeism, or change of academic programme without notification may lead to visa cancellation and loss of future eligibility.”

The advisory also cautioned against using tourist visas for childbirth purposes, noting that “U.S. consular officers may deny tourist visas if there is reason to believe the applicant’s primary intent is to give birth in the U.S. to obtain citizenship for the child.”

The NIS reaffirmed its continued collaboration with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to prevent Nigeria from being included in any expanded visa restrictions. It concluded that compliance with visa regulations is essential to safeguard legitimate travel for Nigerian citizens.

North: CDS Reaffirms Armed Forces’ Commitment to Security

0

The Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, restates the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to restoring peace and strengthening security across Northern Nigeria.

He made this known during a presentation at the two-day interactive session on Government–Citizens Engagement organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Kaduna.

Addressing leaders, scholars, and civil society representatives, General Musa describes the session as timely, saying it provides a platform to evaluate the government’s performance, especially in the security sector.

He outlines key military milestones achieved since assuming office in 2023, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s strategic security directives.

These include the establishment of the Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre in Abuja and a new Department of Training at Defence Headquarters, aimed at enhancing joint operations and personnel efficiency.

General Musa also highlights the graduation of over 800 Special Forces operatives, with hundreds more currently in training at Jaji and Nasarawa, to counter asymmetric threats in the North.

He explains that the restructuring of operations in the North-West into Operation FANSAN YAMMA—a unified joint task force—has been accompanied by the creation of Defence Special Forces Brigades in Kaduna and Niger States, and additional sectors under Operations HADIN KAI and FANSAN YAMMA.

The expansion of Forward Operating Bases and deployment of high-readiness units, he says, are critical in reclaiming volatile territories.

“Over 3,000 terrorists and bandits have been neutralised, more than 120,000 insurgents have surrendered, and over 2,000 kidnapped victims have been rescued within the last two years,” he states.

He adds that more than 2,300 arms and 72,000 rounds of ammunition have been recovered across various operational theatres in the North.

Beyond combat, the CDS also outlines community-based peacebuilding strategies, including youth sports competitions, civic reorientation campaigns, and sustained engagement with traditional rulers, governors, and civil society.

“These efforts are rebuilding trust and enabling the safe return of displaced persons to their ancestral communities,”he explains.

He discloses that the Armed Forces are also contributing to economic recovery through the establishment of ranches, schools, and ICT training centres—especially in the North-East and North-West—in alignment with the Federal Government’s local content policy.

General Musa acknowledges the role of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), and other local defence manufacturers in advancing military logistics and innovation.

On regional diplomacy, he recounts his official visit to Niger Republic in August 2024, where he engaged his counterpart on efforts to curb cross-border threats and promote peace in the sub-region.

He further announces Nigeria’s hosting of the African Chiefs of Defence Conference in Abuja from 25–27 August 2025, aimed at fostering continental collaboration on security challenges.

PDP Faults Okpebholo’s Claim on Benin-Asaba Road Project

The Edo chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described Governor Monday Okpebholo’s claim of initiating the ongoing reconstruction of the Benin-Asaba Expressway as misleading and inaccurate.

In a statement on Saturday, the party’s caretaker committee’s Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, said “the governor’s narrative distorts public records.”

He condemned the claim by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary linking the project to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda(RHA), describing it as political propaganda and a misrepresentation of facts.

According to Nehikhare, the expressway project was conceived and finalised under former Gov. Godwin Obaseki’s administration through a structured public-private partnership framework.

“In January 2024, Obaseki signed a N228 billion concession agreement with Triple A Infrastructure, InfraCorp, and Africa Plus Partners to execute the redevelopment of the road,” Nehikhare said.

He explained that the project was part of the Federal Government’s Highway Development and Management Initiative and followed all required regulatory approvals and standards.

Nehikhare noted that the initiative was not a routine contract but a visionary infrastructure renewal effort designed by Obaseki to deliver long-term economic benefits.

He insisted that the APC-led federal government played no role in the planning or initiation of the project, alleging that execution was deliberately delayed until after the Edo 2024 elections.

Describing Okpebholo’s recent inspection tours of the project as mere publicity stunts, the PDP said the tours added no real value to the project’s scope or funding.

The party maintained that Edo people were politically aware and could not be deceived.

It urged the governor to focus on initiating and completing his own impactful projects rather than claiming credit for inherited ones.

Nehikhare concluded by challenging the governor to deliver on his mandate with original projects that genuinely benefit the people.

It would be recalled that during a recent inspection, Okpebholo described the project as a tangible outcome of Tinubu’s RHA.

He had praised it as a cornerstone of the president’s development vision and a demonstration of the federal government’s commitment to its promises.

“This is part of the RHA of Mr President. He is taking this road straight to Asaba. It is going to be 10 lanes. Five on one side, five on the other side,” he said.

“Remember when this road was flagged off a few months ago, the Minister for Works was here.

“The Minister for Finance was also here. And I was here. This is the fruit of that flag-off,” Okpebholo said.

According to him, and this is the demonstration of Mr president’s RHA for our people.”

Ondo State Governor Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Friday in Akure hosted the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in the state as part of efforts to strengthen the party.

Aiyedatiwa at the meeting called for unity and expressed optimism that the APC would continue to wax stronger in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the meeting is for the statutory members of the party in the state under his leadership to replicate the version of the national caucus.

Aiyedatiwa said the caucus would now meet on a regular basis, reiterating the supremacy of the party, and noted that all groups in the state must work under the leadership of the party.

The governor disclosed the decision of the National Economic Council to launch the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme was aimed at taking development to the grassroots.

“Our strength lies in our unity and all of us as leaders of the APC in the state must come together to build on the foundation already laid.

“As we are heading towards general elections, it is expected that various support groups will spring up.

“All groups must be under the leadership of the central party structure which has the state working committee and the state caucus as core components.

“We don’t have any pending governorship election here in Ondo State, therefore, we have to focus all our efforts on mobilising grassroots votes for the re-election of the President in 2027.

“It is granted that the President will win the election, however, for us in the South-West and Ondo State, the victory must be overwhelming,” he said.

It’s been reported that at the meeting, party leaders unanimously agreed that President Bola Tinubu needed to continue in office beyond 2027, by floating an umbrella structure named ‘Ondo State for Tinubu 2027’.

The caucus later appointed the Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Fasoranti and the State Secretary of the APC, Mrs Roseline Okafor, to coordinate the state secretariat of the caucus.

The member representing Akure North/Akure South Federal Constituency, Derin Adesida, told newsmen on the sidelines of the event that the gathering was enshrined in the APC Constitution to enable leaders to meet and deliberate on the party’s future.

Also speaking with newsmen, APC chieftain, Mr Sola Iji, noted that the constitutional caucus meeting is primarily reserved for top echelons of the party, commending the governor for convening the meeting.

Similarly, the Executive Director, Corporate Affairs, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr Ifedayo Abegunde, applauded Aiyedatiwa for his proactive leadership and foresight in steering the party in the right direction.

Report has it that party leaders, both past and present were present at the meeting.
