Nigeria Government Delivers 500 Health Projects In Two Years

0

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, has announced that Nigeria has executed over 500 health-related projects within the past two years, alongside the establishment of three world-class cancer centres.

Prof. Pate made this known on Thursday during the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Oncology Centre at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Benin City.

According to him, Nigeria’s health sector has undergone a historic transformation in the last two years under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

The minister described the achievements as a bold shift from rhetoric to action in Nigeria’s healthcare delivery.

“In two years, we have embarked on a landmark transformation of Nigeria’s health sector.

“We have delivered three world-class oncology centres, with the one here in Benin as the third, and three others are ongoing and ant advanced stages in Zaria, Jos, and Lagos,” he said.

The minister explained that the Federal Government had so far implemented 501 projects across 61 federal tertiary hospitals and revitalised so many primary healthcare centres nationwide, including those in Edo.

Prof. Pate said that the infrastructure revolution in the sector was made possible by President Tinubu’s decision to prioritise the wellbeing of ordinary Nigerians.

“This President chose the sector that affects the lives of the ordinary citizen and decided to make that impact

“We have spent decades without investing in this manner. But this President decided to take the bull by the horn,” he said

The minister also credited the success to recent economic reforms, which had expanded fiscal space for public investment.

“Thanks to the coordinating minister of the economy and his economic management team, the painful reforms have borne fruit.

“That is how the resources are now available for the Federal Government to invest in health, education, and for states to invest in other ways.”

Highlighting the efficiency of the cancer centre project, Pate disclosed that through the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), world-class equipment was procured at significant savings.

We got a 30 per cent discount from the original equipment manufacturers. Imagine the savings to the Nigerian public and it was delivered and executed on time,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Mr Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, said President Tinubu’s reforms were yielding tangible results in the health sector, with Nigerians no longer needing to travel abroad for cancer treatment.

“Today, the Nigerian no longer has to look abroad, has to look to a far distance in order to get treatment, to prevent, to treat and to help them survive this dreaded disease called cancer,” Edun said.

He said the six geopolitical zones of the country were benefiting from similar oncology projects, with strong partnerships between federal and subnational governments as well as the private sector.

“Our duty is to sustain this effort. We must look after these facilities and machines and ensure that they deliver what they were built for,” he stated.

On his part, the Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, said the newly commissioned oncology centre was a product of “visionary leadership, strategic partnership and deliberate investment.”

According to him, the centre will be a game-changer for cancer treatment in southern Nigeria and beyond.

He revealed that over 4,300 cancer patients were seen at UBTH in 2024 alone, underscoring the urgent need for functional radiotherapy equipment.

“For 10 years, our cobalt radiation machine was down. Today, that challenge has been solved. This centre will serve not just Edo people, but all Nigerians,” he said.

Prof. Obaseki added that more than 259 patients had benefited from the National Cancer Access Programme, with over N430 million spent on treatment and diagnostics in recent years.

He praised the Minister of Health and partners like the NSIA, MedServe, and the Federal Government for their commitments to the health sector.

The report say that the new UBTH Oncology Centre is equipped with modern radiotherapy and chemotherapy facilities, positioning it as one of Nigeria’s most advanced cancer treatment hubs.

The announcement was made in a statement by NOA President, Olumide Oyedeji, in Lagos.

Oyedeji said the award ceremony will be part of the 2025 NOA National Summit, set to take place in Abuja.

It will be an evening of legacy and excellence as NOA hosts a celebration at Zeus Paradise Hotel, Mabushi, Abuja.

He said the event, with the theme: ‘The Labours of Our Heroes Last,’ will honour Olympians, their families, and key figures in Nigerian sports development.

It will also include discussions on athlete welfare and ways to improve recognition,” Oyedeji added.

Oyedeji said awardees were carefully selected for their impact on Nigeria’s Olympic movement and lasting contributions to sports.

He listed Augustine Eguavoen and Samson Siasia (1988 Olympics), and Olympic medallist Deji Aliu (1996, 2000, 2004) among the honourees.

Also to be honoured are Henry Nwosu (1980, 1988), long jumper Yusuf Alli (1984, 1988), and Armelia Edet (1972).

Sprinter Samson Oyeledun (1980, 1984), retired boxer and 1972 medallist Isaac Ikuohria, and handball player Mary Mkpolulu (1992) also made the list.

Weightlifter Cosmos Sampson Idioh (1980) is the final athlete on the roll of honourees.

Oyedeji noted that other distinguished contributors to sports and athlete welfare would also be celebrated at the event.

They include Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs; sports journalist Kunle Solaja; and BRILA FM Chairman Larry Izamoje.

These individuals are being recognised for their careers and support for athletes and the Olympic movement in Nigeria,” Oyedeji said.

NiDO Calls on National Assembly to Pass Diaspora Voting Bill

0

The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NiDO)-Worldwide has urged the Tenth National Assembly to enact a Diaspora Voting Bill to enable Nigerians living abroad to participate in future elections and contribute to the country’s democratic development.

The organisation also appealed to President Tinubu to support inclusive governance by assenting to the Bill once it is passed by the legislature.

The call was made in Abuja during a Walk for Diaspora Voting event organised by NiDO to press for greater inclusion of Nigerians abroad in the nation’s electoral process.

Speaking at the walk, Coordinating Chairman of NiDO-Worldwide, Mr Chibuzo Ubochi, argued that the Nigerian Constitution recognises the right of all citizens of voting age, including those in the diaspora, to register and vote.

“We are Nigerians living abroad. We bear names like Chibuzor, Ibrahim and Ade, eat Nigerian food and run Nigerian businesses wherever we are. So, why can’t we vote? We hold our green passport wherever we go and we are proud of our fatherland. One important thing from our past leaders in the country is that they support Diaspora Voting, so what is holding them back? This is because the National Assembly has yet to legislate it. This is why we are here—to tell them to do the right thing. Nigerians living abroad deserve to be part of the electoral process, especially at the prime of the ongoing Constitutional Review,” he said.

Former Coordinating Chairman of NiDO-Worldwide, Dr Victor Ubani, called on Nigeria’s President to set a historic precedent by signing the Bill when presented.

“We are calling on President Tinubu to listen to us. We appeal to the National Assembly to do the needful. It is not proper being treated as non-Nigerians. There is no way you will tell me that we are not Nigerians just because no one is listening to us. We are here to work closely with the National Assembly to build our nation to benefit our fatherland,” he said.

Global President of the National Association of Nigerian Students in Diaspora (NANS-DIASPORA), Chris Juwon Fayomi, praised the government’s efforts in sustaining democracy but said more needed to be done to ensure full diaspora participation.

“We have come from across several continents of the world to place demand on government towards legislation of Diaspora Voting. This is because no Nigerian will make the most democratic impact in fostering inclusivity of a 17 million population than the one who legislates Diaspora Voting,” Fayomi said.

NiDO is the umbrella body representing the interests and aspirations of Nigerians residing abroad.

Foundation Unveils Pan-African Governance Reform

0

The Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, together with four leading strategic partners, the Africa CEO Forum, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), and African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) have launched a ground-breaking pan-African initiative aimed at making excellence in public policy the engine for sustainable economic transformation across the African continent.

The LEAD initiative is a respond to an obvious fact that despite nearly two decades of almost uninterrupted growth, Africa continues to suffer from a deficit in public services which significantly inhibits its economic development and the quality of life of its 1.4 billion inhabitants.

Considering that many other economies in the Global South, with comparable GDPs, have undergone impactful transformations during the same period, demonstrating that well-designed regulatory, fiscal, and logistical choices can bring about major change, this initiative aims to bridge the gap by putting sound economic governance back at the core of Africa’s development agenda.

The initiative’s primary objective will, therefore, be to promote excellence in African public policy among some 50 high-potential young civil servants from across the continent each year, drawing inspiration from concrete examples of global success, such as Brazil, which has created a universal healthcare system while digitizing its public services; Indonesia, which has become a global leader in nickel, thanks to a local transformation strategy; and India, which has revolutionized financial inclusion with its Aadhaar digital identity program.

The initiative will also try to build a pan-African network of young public decision-makers who share a common vision of public service excellence and the ambition to help make big projects, like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), happen in addition to willingness to work together to deal with upcoming demographic, climate, and industrial challenges, making public leadership the main economic infrastructure on the continent.

Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Founder of the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation added that, “The human capital of Africa’s public sector is one of the continent’s most underutilized resources. Training, equipping, and empowering public sector leaders is a vital mission. Through this initiative, we are joining forces to build a high-performing, citizen-focused public service, driven by results.”

Nigerian Senate Adjourns Plenary to September 23

The Nigerian Senate has adjourned plenary activities until 23 September 2025.

The adjournment followed a motion moved by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, after a closed-door executive session that lasted over an hour.

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, explained before the motion was seconded by Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP–Benue), that the break marks the end of the current legislative year.

He clarified that plenary was merely suspended and directed all ad hoc and standing committees to conclude work on pending reports ahead of resumption.

“Standing and ad hoc committees must use the two-month break effectively to conclude their assignments for legislative consideration and adoption upon resumption,” Senator Akpabio stated.

The Nigerian Senate President also urged lawmakers to take advantage of the recess to inspect ongoing projects in their constituencies and across the country.

Meanwhile, lawmakers are expected to travel to Jos, Plateau State, on Friday for the burial of the wife of their colleague, Senator Diket Plang.

Embrace New Members – President Tinubu Tells APC

President Tinubu has reaffirmed the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s openness to new members and fresh ideas, declaring that the ruling party remains inclusive and committed to progressive governance.

He stated this during the party’s 14th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting the Conference Centre, State House in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The Nigerian Leader described opposition parties as “a coalition of confusion”, urging like-minded Nigerians to join the APC’s developmental agenda.

“Our doors are still open, and we should wholeheartedly embrace those who join us,” he said.

President Tinubu expressed appreciation to former APC National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, for his contributions to the party’s growth and ideological direction.

“I gave him an assignment on forming a progressive doctrine and a progressive institute. I believe the National Secretary will help revitalise and coordinate this effort,” the President said.

While acknowledging ongoing economic challenges, President Tinubu insisted that significant progress had been made under his administration. He cited a record N14.9 trillion in revenue generated by the Federal Inland Revenue Service in the first half of 2025—representing a 43 per cent increase from collections in 2024.

“It is not easy to navigate the stormy waters of economic instability. Now, the economy is stabilised—there is no fear for the country except for continued upward movement and sustained growth. I can assure you,” he stated.

The NEC meeting also saw the election of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, as the new National Chairman of the APC. Yilwatda and the new Deputy National Secretary were both elected by consensus.

The tenure of zonal, state, council and ward executives was extended until 31 December 2025.

The immediate past Acting National Chairman, Engr Bukar Dalori, said the NEC meeting was necessitated by the resignation of the former National Chairman. He commended the President and the Progressive Governors’ Forum for their intervention during the party’s leadership transition.

Kenya Boosts Tourism Campaign Amid Wildebeest Migration

0

Kenyan President, William Ruto said that, the government will intensify a campaign to boost tourist numbers in the country.

Ruto, who opened the 2025 Great Wildebeest Migration global livestreaming at the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve in southwest Kenya, said the campaign aims to attract 5 million foreign tourists by 2027.

“We are focused on tourism that enriches both the visitor and the host, and transforms travellers into ambassadors for Kenya, a country proud of its wild beauty, conservation achievements, and unbreakable spirit,” he said.

The president, who urged local and international tourists to take advantage of the country’s attractions, said the campaign seeks to promote Kenya as the home of human origins and a top travel destination for innovation, sports, conference tourism, adventure, wildlife, culture, and beach holidays.

Kenya’s international tourist arrivals increased by 15 percent to 2.4 million in 2024, up from 2.09 million in 2023, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife. Inbound tourism earnings rose to 452.20 billion shillings (about 3.5 billion U.S. dollars) from 2.92 billion dollars in 2023.

Ruto said, “Masai Mara, which welcomes more than 400,000 visitors annually, is the crown jewel of Kenya’s tourism offerings.
“Sustainable tourism is a living reality in Masai Mara, where communities thrive, ecosystems flourish, and travelers leave enthralled.”

The Masai Mara wildebeest migration is an annual movement of millions of wildebeest, zebras, and other herbivores from Serengeti in Tanzania to Masai Mara in Kenya, primarily between July and October.

This spectacular event, often referred to as the “Great Migration,” is driven by the search for fresh grazing land and water. The highlight of the migration is usually the dramatic river crossings of the Mara River, where wildebeest face the risk of predation by crocodiles and other predators.

Ruto said Kenya’s efforts to protect biodiversity, restore habitats, and involve communities in stewardship have made Masai Mara not only a wildlife haven, but also a global symbol of sustainability.

“To all watching around the world, I invite you to explore our treasures from the thundering hooves of Masai Mara to the calm shores of our coast, from snow-capped peaks to sunlit savannahs,” he said.

Ooni Celebrates Yoruba Heritage with Traditional Drumming Festival

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, on Thursday led a lively cultural celebration focused on traditional drumming, aimed at fostering peace, unity, and preserving Yoruba heritage.

The colourful festival, held in the Courtyard of the Ooni’s Palace in Ile-Ife, drew thousands of cultural enthusiasts, academics, traditionalists, and performers. Among those in attendance were professors from the Departments of Linguistics and Music at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), as well as no fewer than 250 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), students from OAU, and contingents from institutions across the South-West.

In a strong show of support for indigenous talent and creativity, the Ooni awarded a total of ₦4.95 million to the winners of the drumming competition and other cultural performers. The first-place winner received ₦1 million, the second-place ₦750,000, and the third-place ₦500,000.

Additionally, the Ooni donated ₦2 million to performers from the renowned Moremi Ensemble, ₦500,000 to the celebrated drummer Akande Onilu, and ₦100,000 each to two other outstanding drummers.

Speaking to journalists, Oba Ogunwusi underscored the spiritual and historical importance of the drum in Yoruba cosmology, describing it as both a symbol of identity and a powerful tool of communication.

“The drum holds profound significance in our daily lives. In ancient times, it was used for nearly every purpose, whether to announce joyful news or to signal the threat of war. It was our primary medium of communication,” he said.

The monarch traced the spiritual roots of drumming to Ayangalu, a revered figure in Yoruba tradition.

“The drum is deeply symbolic to the Yoruba. Ayangalu, the originator of the drum, is honoured as one of the 201 deities of Ile-Ife and is spiritually connected to Orunmila. His journey began here in Atiba, Ile-Ife. Though some of his descendants migrated to Oyo and Nupe territories, many remain in Ife. Each year, we honour his legacy through this festival.

“For us, Ayangalu is synonymous with the drum. I drum today for peace, joy, and blessings. Since my youth, I have found fulfilment in preserving this sacred tradition,” the Ooni declared.

Queen Ronke Ogunwusi also praised the Ooni for his continued moral and financial commitment to cultural advancement, both within Ile-Ife and beyond. She acknowledged stakeholders such as Seamans, university lecturers, NYSC members, students, traditional chiefs, and guests for their contributions to the festival’s success.

“This gathering is a celebration of our rich cultural heritage. Ayangalu represents excellence and creativity. I encourage every Yoruba person to take pride in their roots and continue learning from one another. As we enjoy the competition, may it also inspire us to uphold unity and the timeless strength of our tradition,” she said.

Also addressing the gathering, Baale Adekunle Adeite of Ikorodu, Ijebu-Ode, spoke passionately about the uniqueness of Yoruba culture.

He described it as “incomparable” and the most authentic expression of Yoruba identity. He also shared his personal efforts in promoting Yoruba heritage globally.

“For nearly a decade, I have been actively promoting Yoruba culture on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. We also operate radio stations in Texas and Washington, DC that are dedicated exclusively to Yoruba cultural traditions to ensure they never fade away,” he explained.

Baale Adeite further stressed the distinction between culture and religion, and lauded the Ooni for his unwavering commitment to safeguarding Yoruba cultural heritage. He urged Nigerians to preserve the integrity of their traditions for future generations.
