Egypt Faces Heatwave, Risks Public Safety

0

Egypt is experiencing an exceptional heatwave, with high temperatures and humidity posing significant risks to public health and impacting key sectors such as agriculture and industry.

According to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, temperatures on the northern coasts range from 31 degrees Celsius to 32 degrees, in Greater Cairo from 37 degrees to 38 degrees, and in the southern region from 40 degrees to 44 degrees.

The Director of Analysis and Forecasts at the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, Mahmoud Shahin said, “The severe heat is expected to persist in the coming days, with both daytime and night-time temperatures forecast to rise by up to 3 degrees Celsius above seasonal averages.”

Ibrahim Darwish, professor of Agriculture at Menoufia University, said that rising temperatures pose a serious challenge to food and water security in agricultural countries.

The high temperatures lead to a decrease in agricultural productivity due to their negative impact on photosynthesis, respiration, and biosynthesis within plants.

Darwish noted that the heatwave is likely to alter planting and ripening times, as high temperatures accelerate the plant’s life cycle, leading to premature and incomplete ripening, which in turn prevents sufficient dry matter formation, especially in grains.

Darwish added that, “The heatwave may also increase the incidence of insect pests and plant diseases, damage plant tissues, and inhibit root development. Crops require more water to compensate for these effects, reducing water-use efficiency and increasing strain on water resources.”

South Sudanese President Calls For Removal of Sanctions, Embargo

0

South Sudan President Salva Kiir on Wednesday called for the lifting of sanctions and arms embargo imposed following the outbreak of a conflict in December 2013.

Speaking during the opening of the Revitalized Transitional National Legislative Assembly in Juba, capital of South Sudan, Kiir said the sanctions and arms embargo are hindering progress and security reform.

“To our international partners, South Sudan’s foreign policy is underpinned by peaceful coexistence, regional cooperation, and mutual respect. However, I reiterate our call for the immediate lifting of sanctions and the arms embargo,” said Kiir.

South Sudan has been under a United Nations arms embargo since 2018, which prohibits weapons transfers and external military support to the country’s warring parties, with sanctions also imposed by the United States and several European countries.

In addition, Kiir urged all parties to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement to recommit without setting pre-conditions toward the implementation of the now fragile peace pact.

He encouraged all hold-out opposition parties that did not sign the peace agreement to join the peace process to realize reconciliation, unity, and nation-building.

“The opposition forces that are for peace must be welcomed and immediately integrated so that we have one national army,” Kiir added.

He also stressed that peace, security, and national unity remain the top priorities of his government.

Samsung Boss Cleared Of Fraud By South Korea’s Top Court

0

Samsung boss Lee Jae-yong has been cleared by South Korea’s top court of fraud charges, concluding a years-long legal battle over his role in a 2015 merger deal.

Lee, the grandson of Samsung’s founder and the de facto head of the company since 2014, had been accused of using stock and accounting fraud to try to gain control of the firm.

In its final verdict, the Supreme Court in Seoul upheld a not guilty verdict, after Lee was acquitted of all charges in two earlier trials.

The case drew widespread scrutiny of the technology giant, as the country grapples with corporate corruption scandals involving its powerful family-run conglomerates known as chaebols.

“Today, the Supreme Court has clearly confirmed through its final ruling that the merger of Samsung C&T and the accounting treatment of Samsung Biologics were lawful,” said Samsung’s lawyers on Thursday.

“We sincerely thank the court for its wise judgment following a thorough five-year trial process.”

The Samsung boss faced allegations of fraud in the wake of a merger that prosecutors said was designed to shift control of the company from his father, Lee Kun-hee. His father suffered a heart attack in 2014 and faced legal troubles of his own and died in 2020.

The younger Lee was first arrested in 2017 on charges of bribery to win the government’s support for a merger between two Samsung subsidiaries.

Over the course of his legal problems, he had separate jail terms cut short – one due to a special presidential pardon when he was on parole from prison.

At the time, the government said the leader of the country’s biggest company was needed to spearhead South Korea’s economic recovery in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2024, a district court cleared Lee of all charges linked to the merger worth around $8bn (£5.97bn) between two of its subsidiary companies.

Lee was cleared again after prosecutors appealed the case in the High Court.

Legal cases over the past decade have added to Samsung’s troubles as it struggles with intensifying competition and underwhelming stock market performance.

Health Mandate Secretary Announces Hospital Expansion Plans Across FCT

0

The Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, has announced plans for the construction of new hospitals across the FCT to improve access to quality healthcare services.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday during a capacity development training for health managers, Dr Fasawe disclosed that more than six to seven world-standard hospitals have already been established, with more underway.

“You will soon begin to see new hospitals springing up in the FCT. However, we cannot continue to build hospitals without addressing the shortage of human resources.

“Our doctors are migrating abroad, but we are currently addressing that challenge,” she said.

Unprecedented Investment in Health Workforce

Dr Fasawe commended the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, for prioritising healthcare in the 2025 budget, describing the sectoral allocation as unprecedented.

“We’re not just building hospitals. We’re investing in the system.”

Under this administration, we’ve increased our health workforce by over 1,000 personnel.

Salaries for some categories of health workers have been doubled, and for the first time, FCT doctors are receiving uniform allowances,” she stated.

She noted that a significant portion of the health budget had been dedicated to improving human resources, as part of a comprehensive and realistic Annual Operational Plan (AOP) designed to reposition the FCT health sector.

Supporting Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda

Dr Fasawe expressed pride in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, describing it as a transformative blueprint already impacting the healthcare system.

She pointed to ongoing road construction and rehabilitation projects across the city and area councils, which have significantly improved access to healthcare facilities, especially in previously underserved areas.

Commending Health Workers Amidst Challenges

She praised the resilience and professionalism of doctors and health workers in FCT secondary facilities, noting that despite limited resources, only one warning strike had occurred since the Wike-led administration came into office—an issue resolved within three days.

“I want to commend our doctors for their commitment, even in difficult conditions.

“They have shown discipline and solidarity with the FCT Administration,” she said.

Primary Healthcare and Area Councils

Addressing the recent three-month strike by workers in area councils, Dr Fasawe clarified that primary healthcare centres fall under their jurisdiction.

However, she lauded the labour unions for maintaining essential services, particularly during immunisation campaigns.

“Despite the strike, the FCT recorded a 101 percent achievement in the last immunisation exercise. That’s unprecedented,” she added.

Reversing Brain Drain in the Health Sector

Dr Fasawe expressed optimism that efforts to improve welfare and working conditions would reverse the brain drain currently affecting the Nigerian health sector.

“We’re beginning to see doctors who left the country showing interest in returning.

“If we look after our healthcare professionals, they will stay—and some will come back,” she said.
