APC Mourns Former President Muhammadu Buhari

The governing All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed profound grief over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari who passed away at the age of 82.

The party described his passing as a monumental national loss, honouring his legacy as a leader defined by integrity, discipline, and unwavering patriotism.

This was disclosed by the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr. Felix Morka.

“Nigeria has lost an enigmatic leader, iconic elder-statesman, and exemplary patriot whose life of devoted resolve, resilience, discipline and integrity will remain evergreen in the hearts and minds of this and future generations of Nigerians,” Mr. Morka said.

Speaking further Mr. Morka said “Until his passing, Buhari led a simple but exceptional life of service to our dear nation. From his tenure as Chairman of Petroluem Trust Fund (PTF) to his service as a military Head of State, and a two-term President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he has left behind a solid and awe-inspiring legacy of leadership and service.

“Against the backdrop of his record of military service, the departed former President was an unlikely democrat but is one of the most influential contributors to the strengthening and consolidation of our democracy. Aside his stint with the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), he led the emergence of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) which later merged with other political parties to birth the APC in 2013.” The National Publicity Secretary emphasised.

APC said the late President Buhari made history when he became the first presidential contender to defeat an incumbent President in 2015 on the platform of APC.

The party extended its condolences to the immediate family of the late president and also to President Bola Tinubu, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, “over this profound and irreplaceable national loss.”

“May Almighty Allah grant the soul of our departed leader Aljannatul Firdaus. Ameen.” The Party prayed.

Plateau State ADC Backs 2027 Coalition

The Plateau State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has pledged total allegiance to what it calls the most formidable political coalition in the nation’s history, gearing up for the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a press briefing on Sunday in Jos, ADC Plateau leaders said the new alliance reflects widespread public frustration over the worsening economic climate and failed governance, calling it a “peaceful political revolution” in the making.

The State Publicity Secretary of the party, Silas Audu declared that the current socio-political landscape demands a credible alternative, and the ADC stands ready to fill that gap.

“Nigerians are now pushed to the wall due to the unpopular policies of this current government. This coalition is unlike the one we saw in 2013. It is the biggest and most powerful political alignment ever seen in Nigeria, and it shows the people’s hunger for real democratic change,” he said.

He reaffirmed the ADC’s longstanding presence in the political arena, highlighting its consistent commitment to internal democracy since its registration in 2003. Wettok emphasized that the party is actively inviting patriotic Nigerians  to join its mission of national renewal.

As part of a broader restructuring move to fortify the coalition’s momentum ahead of 2027, he. announced the dissolution of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) by the ADC’s national leadership.

The directive comes with a shift in command, as all decisions are now to come from the Interim National Chairman, Senator David Mark, and Interim National Secretary, Raul Aregbesola.

Despite national changes, he confirmed that the Plateau State ADC structures remain intact, with Honourable Samuel Pam Gyang recognised as the legitimate state chairman. He made it clear that the party has a functioning leadership in all 17 local government areas, with tenures running through 2026.

The press conference also served as a platform to address recent internal disputes and misinformation.

The ADC issued a stern warning to those trying to destabilise the coalition with fake news and leadership confusion.

Specifically, the party distanced itself from social media claims by Mrs. Hanatu Gagara, clarifying that she remains the Women Leader and not the Plateau State Chairman.

“The authentic chairman of ADC in Plateau is Hon. Samuel Pam Gyang. Any contrary information is false and misleading,” he stressed.

He praised Aregbesola’s prompt action in dispelling a falsified list of party chairmen circulating online, which he said was an orchestrated effort to derail the coalition’s growing unity.

The publicity Secretary reiterated the ADC’s unwavering stance on lawful political engagement and said the party would not be distracted by what he described as “bad eggs” attempting to sabotage Nigeria’s march toward credible leadership.

“This is an unstoppable movement. And those trying to derail it will not succeed,” he added.

Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, appreciated the late leader for the support he gave her in her current position while in office.

Deputy UN Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, in a tribute, eulogised the departed president as “one guided by the values he lived: discipline, humility and deep love for our country.”

Former Woman Leader of the All Progressives Congress and Executive Director of NEXIM Bank Stella Okotete, in a tribute, describes the late president as an embodiment of integrity, discipline, and service.

“President Buhari believed in youth. He believed in women. And more than anything, he believed in building a legacy rooted in truth, fairness, and the selfless dedication to nation-building he carried so deeply in his heart.

“Though he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in the institutions he strengthened, the lives he touched, and the people like me whom he empowered. His courage, quiet strength, and unwavering commitment to a better Nigeria continue to inspire me every single day,” she wrote.

Former Minister of State FCT Haj. In a condolence statement, “NAWOJ recognised the late leader’s contributions to the development and unity of this country and hopes that his legacies will continue to inspire the women and youths of this country to always strive for the truth and excellence and make positive impacts in their communities and the nation.”

Meanwhile, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, in their final group B match against Algeria, paid a solemn tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari by wearing black bands and observing a minute of silence before the national anthems preceding kickoff in their WAFCON 2024 fixture against Algeria in Casablanca, Morocco.

“A minute of silence was observed before kickoff in honour of former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away today. May his soul rest in peace. #SoarSuperFalcons #WAFCON2024 #NGAALG,” the Super Falcons posted on their official X account on Sunday.

Sports during the Buhari administration enjoyed a boost with the Federal Executive Council approval of “the sports as business policy.”

On assumption of office, the late Nigerian leader abolished the office of the First Lady, saying it had no constitutional backing.

The move led to mixed reactions; while some commended the decision, many gender development advocates criticised the decision as being detrimental to the mediatory role the office played in advocacy and the overall development of issues concerning women, girls, and children.

In the 2022 World Gender Gap report, Nigeria was ranked 50th in economic participation and opportunity and 134th in educational attainment, attributing that to gender gaps in wealth accumulation resulting from underlying gender gaps in the labour force.

The report also revealed that, on access to finance, women in Nigeria had near equal rights in accessing financial services, near equal access to land assets, and uneven rights to access non-land assets.

In February 2023, a few months before the end of his administration, the late President Buhari inaugurated a 56-member National Advisory Committee on Women’s Economic Empowerment, High-Level Advisory Council (HLAC), to support Nigerian women and girls in economic development.

In November 2022, the Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, announced that 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had domesticated the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act 2015 to curb incessant cases of violence across states.

Tallen also stated that 32 states had also domesticated the Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003.

The former two-time president died at the age of 82.

He served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.

He unsuccessfully vied for the presidency of Nigeria three times, in 2003, 2007, and 2011, before clinching victory in 2015 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Buhari’s 2015 inauguration marked a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic history, as it was the first time an opposition candidate unseated a sitting president through the ballot.

He was the first Nigerian president to defeat an incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan. His win in 2015 changed the tides in Nigeria’s democratic history, marking the historic first unseating of an incumbent president through the ballot.

He served two terms and handed over power to the incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023.

Trump’s Envoy Begins Kyiv Talks, Pledges Patriots, Weapons

0

Kyiv, Ukraine – July 14, 2025 — Former U.S. National Security Advisor Keith Kellogg, now serving as President Donald Trump’s envoy to Ukraine, began security talks in Kyiv on Monday amid a sharp policy shift by the White House — including plans to send Patriot air defense systems and possibly offensive weapons to Ukraine.

Trump’s decision marks a significant departure from his earlier reluctance to supply Kyiv with advanced weaponry. According to sources cited by Axios, the administration is preparing a new package of offensive arms aimed at helping Ukraine counter intensifying Russian missile and drone strikes.

“We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need,” Trump told reporters on Sunday before departing Joint Base Andrews. “Putin talks nice and then bombs everybody in the evening.”

Trump added that Ukraine would receive “various pieces of sophisticated military equipment” and emphasised that the U.S. expects to be reimbursed — either by Ukraine or European allies — for the cost of the arms.

While the number of Patriot batteries was not disclosed, Trump indicated that the European Union would cover the cost, part of a growing effort to pressure NATO countries to shoulder more of the burden in arming Ukraine.

Kellogg is expected to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and military officials to discuss battlefield needs, sanctions enforcement, and long-term security cooperation. “Defence, weapons, sanctions, protecting our people — there are many topics to discuss,” said Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine’s presidential administration.

Zelenskiy has urged the West to supply more air defence and long-range strike capabilities, as Russia continues to hold around 20% of Ukrainian territory and gains ground in the eastern regions. The Ukrainian military reported intensifying missile barrages, while the Kremlin shows no signs of altering its strategic war objectives.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is set to meet Trump in Washington this week, and German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer will hold talks with U.S. Defence Secretary Mark Esper. Germany, now playing a growing role in European defence, has offered to pay for Patriot systems as part of a NATO-backed initiative to strengthen Ukraine’s air defences.

A Kremlin aide said Putin told Trump in a July 3 phone call that Moscow remains open to negotiations but will not abandon its core goals. Russian demands in recent talks reportedly included Ukraine ceding additional territory and accepting strict limits on its armed forces — terms Kyiv has rejected outright.

Russia continues to claim its invasion was necessary to prevent Ukraine’s NATO membership and to secure its borders. Kyiv and its Western allies dismiss those claims as unfounded, calling the war a modern-day imperial conquest.

In a recent escalation, Russian-installed officials said Ukrainian drones struck a training facility at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Kyiv has not commented on the alleged attack.

The war, now in its fourth year, has left hundreds of thousands dead or wounded and remains Europe’s deadliest ground conflict since World War II. With U.S. policy shifting and NATO unity under scrutiny, this week’s developments could shape the trajectory of the war — and the future of European security.
