0

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Primary Health Care Board (FPHCB) has signed a partnership agreement with Silver Cross Hospital, Abuja, to enhance healthcare delivery at the grassroots level.

The agreement, signed on Monday, aims to upgrade medical services and infrastructure at three selected Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) within the territory.

The affected facilities are the Saburi PHC (under Gwagwa ward), Dei-Dei PHC, and Idu PHC

Speaking during a tour of the facilities, Dr Ruqayya Wamakko, Executive Secretary of the FPHCB, emphasised the global shift towards Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).

She noted that such collaboration was critical to strengthening the health sector in the FCT.

“The government cannot do everything alone, even though it is doing a lot already. We must embrace partnerships to meet the healthcare demands of our growing population in the FCT,” she said.

Wamakko highlighted that private healthcare facilities significantly outnumbered public ones in the FCT, adding that they provided between 70 and 75 per cent of healthcare services across the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels.

“This partnership is crucial for reaching vulnerable groups in our communities, women, children, and people living with disabilities, and for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC),” she added.

She also addressed the global challenge of skilled healthcare workforce shortages, affirming that the FCT Administration was aware and taking steps to recruit more health workers, particularly at the PHC level.

According to her, the Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, is already working behind the scenes to revamp the sector.

On the ongoing strike by PHC-level health workers, Wamakko assured that discussions were ongoing, led by the Minister of the FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, to find a resolution.

“In the last two to three weeks, all stakeholders, including community leaders and traditional rulers, have met to address the issue.

“Our minister is fully committed to resolving it,” she said.

The Executive Officer of Silver Cross Hospital, said the partnership aimed to form a cooperative network of healthcare facilities that would positively impact community health.

Ezie explained that Silver Cross Healthcare Foundation and its board members had agreed to support the FPHCB in enhancing PHCs through the PPP model by introducing best practices from the private sector.

“Over 60 per cent of PHCs serve about 70 per cent of the rural population. We want to ensure these Centres have what they need to function effectively.

The hospital will contribute to infrastructure upgrades, donate equipment, remodel facilities where needed, and provide manpower support as part of the philanthropic initiative.

“This is about giving back and ensuring that community members, especially laborers and low-income earners, have access to quality healthcare,” he added.

Capgemini To Buy Outsourcing Firm WNS For $3.3 Billion

France’s Capgemini has agreed to buy a technology outsourcing firm for $3.3 billion in cash to expand the range of AI tools it offers for companies, the IT services group said on Monday.

The deal equips Capgemini to create a consulting business service focused on helping companies improve their processes and cost efficiency with the use of artificial intelligence, namely generative AI and agentic AI, which it expects to attract significant investments.

The purchase price, translating to $76.50 per WNS share,e represents a 17% premium compared to their last closing price on July 3 and does not include WNS’s financial debt, Capgemini said.

Its interest in India-based WNS, whose services include business process outsourcing and data analytics, was first reported, report says.

“WNS brings its high growth, margin accretive and resilient Digital Business Process Services while further increasing our exposure to the US market,” Capgemini CEO Aiman Ezzat said in a press statement.

WNS’s customers include large organizations such as Coca-Cola, T-Mobile and United Airlines.

On a conference call with media and analysts, Ezzat said the acquisition would immediately create cross-selling opportunities between the two companies, mainly in the US and Britain.

Capgemini expects the deal to be closed by the end of 2025 and to be immediately accretive to its revenue and operating margin.

However, its shares fell around 5% following the news, the biggest losers on Europe’s benchmark STOXX 600 index as of 1024 GMT, with Morgan Stanley analysts saying the deal would limit its balance sheet flexibility while not having a major impact on financials.

Some investors are also concerned that Gen AI could impact the typically staff-intensive business process outsourcing (BPO) market, which could bite into Capgemini’s revenues and expose it to new competition, the analysts said in a research note.

“We expect investors to be able to see the opportunity that could come from disrupting BPO with Gen AI, but think some evidence will be needed to convince the market WNS is the right vehicle,” they added.

Ebonyi APC Reveals Imminent Defection of Another Opposition Rep

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Ebonyi State has revealed that another House of Representatives member from the opposition party will soon defect to the party.

The party had received the member representing Ezza North/Ishieleu federal constituency, Hon. Joseph Nwobashi from All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) with the member representing Afikpo/Edda federal constituency, Iduma Igariwey and his Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo federal constituency counter part, Nkemkanma Kama remaining in People’s Democratic Party(PDP) and Labour Party(LP).

Also, three House of Assembly members in the state elected on the platform of APGA, LP and PDP had defected to the APC.

The state APC Chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha said he was in talk with one of the House of Representatives members which will lead to his defection to the APC in few weeks time.

Emegha who refused to mention a particular federal lawmaker that will soon join the party, opined that his discussed with the House of Representatives member, has gone far which will manifest in his defection to the APC.

The Chairman stated this in Abakaliki, the state capital while reacting to coalition of opposition parties against APC at the national level which he said has no effect on the party at the both state and national levels.

“So far coalition of political parties is concerned, nobody should panic. APC is on course and Mr. President is trying to fix the things that have taken decades to fix and I believe very strongly that Mr. President in partnership with Governors of states are working very hard to ensure that Nigeria competes favorably with other countries of the world.

“By few weeks now, you will see another National Assembly members defecting to join me in APC and that is how prepared we are, its just simple. You know that they were up to four and one house of Assembly is now remaining in opposition and he is working very close with us but something is just holding him down.

“The member representing Ezza North/Ishielu federal constituency was in opposition(APGA) and he joined us in APC few weeks ago and I am still talking with the remaining two National Assembly members in opposition; PDP and LP.

“So, in few weeks now, it might not be up to two weeks, you will see another House of Reps member joining APC here in Ebonyi. So, that is how prepared I am against 2027. You will be surprised what will happen in few weeks now”, he said.

Nigeria Lists Bakassi Deep Seaport for Accelerated Development

Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola has revealed the plan of the Government to accelerate the development of key seaports including the Bakassi deep seaport.

Mr. Oyetola gave the hint at the launch of the National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy in Lagos State, South Western Nigeria, an event that was attended by the governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu and other stakeholders.

The Minister described the policy as a transformative step towards positioning Nigeria as the leading maritime hub in West and Central Africa.

He said, “this policy signals a new dawn for the sector. Our objective is clear – to catalyse sustainable development by accelerating the completion of critical deep seaports that will drive economic transformation.”

In a remark sequel to the launch of the new strategic framework, Governor Otu expressed profound excitement that the Nigerian Government listed the proposed Bakassi deep seaport, alongside eight others, for Accelerated development.

Governor Otu further described the Nigerian government’s plan as welcomed, timely and visionary, noting that the Bakassi Deep Seaport was a significant highlight of his administration’s economic blueprint.

Otu said, “this project is not only central to the industrial future of Cross River, it is a national asset capable of unlocking regional prosperity and redefining Nigeria’s place in global maritime trade.”

He commended the Nigerian government for the foresight and commitment of ensuring that its national infrastructure goals aligned with the strategic needs of coastal states.

According to Otu, Nigeria loses 79 percent of its cargo shipping activities to neighbouring countries such as Benin Republic, Togo and Ghana, while a paltry 21 percent account for cargoes coming into the country.

He attributed the losses to lack of depth and capacity in existing Nigerian seaports, a situation which hinders the berthing of very large vessels, stating “the implication is that cargoes meant for Nigerian ports are consequently smuggled into the country from the 79 percent of cargoes that find their way into neighbouring countries.

“In effect, one hundred percent of those cargoes were originally meant to be shipped directly into Nigeria. So, the conception of the Bakassi Deep seaport, and of course, when eventually completed, will address the obvious shipping nightmare Nigeria is currently experiencing,” he reiterated.

A Gateway to the Gulf of Guinea

When the former administration envisioned the development of the Bakassi deep seaport, the essence was to make the port a gateway to the Gulf of Guinea linking the north, south-east and south-south corridors.

Thus, with the newly launched national policy on Nigeria’s blue economy, the Cross River State government and relevant stakeholders believe that the deep seaport project would be realised.

Other seaports listed for development on the national framework include Badagry, Olokola, Ondo, Bonny, Burutu, Benin, Ibom and Agge located in Lagos, Rivers, Ondo, Edo, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.

Expert Says Africa’s Crisis Is Primary Healthcare Neglect

A renowned Human Capital Development expert and Health Management Consultant,  Dr. Ben Nkechika has said that Africa’s real health crisis lies in the neglect of its primary healthcare systems.

Nkechika made this known during an interview with the News reporter.

Read More:Katsina Moves to Strengthen Healthcare Against Climate Threats

He noted that while global focus often centers on sophisticated hospitals and high-end medical equipment, the continued collapse of primary healthcare structures is silently claiming lives across the continent.

“Strong primary healthcare is not controversial, it is essential. The real tragedy is that most people never make it to a hospital at all,” he said.

According to him, in countless villages across Nigeria and other parts of Africa, a mother still delivers her baby on a bare floor because the nearest nurse is 40 kilometers away.

“A child dies from preventable malaria because no health post is close enough to administer a simple treatment, “ he noted.

The Health expert said that 60 per cent of all medical conditions in Africa could be treated at the primary level.

He said that underinvestment and misplaced priorities had left frontline clinics broken, underfunded and understaffed.

“We are building pyramids from the top down. But real change starts at the base, in the dusty, forgotten clinics that still manage to change lives,” he said.

He said that countries like Rwanda, Kenya, and Ghana had demonstrated the power of decentralised PHC systems.

He said that these models had delivered vaccines, provided maternal care, screened for non-communicable diseases and created thousands of jobs for nurses and community health workers, all while keeping healthcare costs sustainable.

Nkechika said that the numbers tell a compelling story.

Only four in 10 Nigerians have access to functional primary healthcare facilities

“Up to 70 per cent of the country’s health budget was still allocated to secondary and tertiary care, and millions across Africa continue to die from preventable causes due to weak PHC systems.

“If Africa invested even half as much in PHC as it does in urban hospitals, we will save lives, reduce costs and build resilient economies ” he added.

According to him, PHC is not just healthcare; it is survival, dignity and education.
