The Cross River State Command alongside local divers have recovered the remains of the three missing medical students from the Calabar River.

The Commissioner for Police, Mr. Gyogon Augustine Grimah told some reporters in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State in southern Nigeria that the locals recovered the remains of two males and one female, who were identified by their peers as those missing following last Saturday’s boat accident.

Grimah said, This morning I want to let you know that the three bodies have been recovered and have been delivered to us. When the bodies were sighted, our Marine Police raced to the scene, and with a joint effort, they were recovered and we are taking them to where they will be preserved for now.

“The governor is already taking some actions; as you can see the resort was shut down yesterday, that is to tell you that this incident is taken seriously,” he said.

It would be recalled that for the Nigerian Medical Students Association, NiMSA, for their annual Health Week celebration, 14 Medical Students in Calabar visited the Marina Resort in a boat, which resulted in a disaster as the vessel capsized with all 14 including the rider and Devan on board.

While the Nigerian Navy and local divers rescued 11 students, three were missing until Monday morning, when locals recovered the remains of the students.

The incident, which the president of the Nigerian Medical Students Association Mr Ejim Clement Egba attributed to negligence of the cruise operators, resulted in the shut down of the resort by the Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu.

The Governor has also ordered an investigation into the accident and those found culpable be prosecuted in line with the rule of law.

Meanwhile, the bodies recovered were two males and a female from Ahmadu Bello University, Niger Delta University and the University of Uyo respectively.
