BON inaugurates first Batch of Society of Nigeria Broadcasters

The Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, (BON), has inducted the first batch of members of the Society of Nigeria Broadcasters.

The Chairman of BON, Mr John Ogbe said the aim of the Society is to strengthen journalism profession and harness media practice in the country.

Mr Ogbe disclosed that the society of Nigeria broadcasters is not a substitute of any regulatory body but a regulatory body over the activities of individual broadcasters.

The Nigeria Society of Broadcasters is not a substitute to any regulatory body, but a regulatory body that will oversee the activities of individual broadcasters.

We are hoping that the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters will soon be signed into law by the Nigerian senate so that we function as full professional body like other bodies we have in the country” Mr. Ogbe added.

The Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Yemi Farombi said if the society is signed into law, journalism profession will be respected and regain its image and journalists will be respected and treated with dignity.

“I am very excited for the effort of our colleagues making to see that the society exist just the way we fought tirelessly in 1962 to see that Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria existed, which will manage the activities of all media in Nigeria as an Association that is in charge of private and public broadcasters in Nigeria.”

The Guest lecturer, Professor Tony Iredia in his paper presentation titled ‘The Need to Manage Broadcast Transmission and to Sustain Service’ said the challenge of journalism need to be address in Nigeria.

“There is need to transform our broadcast system in Nigeria in terms of good leadership by managing our staff, maintaining objectivity in our reportage and to maintain our dignity where ever we find ourselves because people rely on what we report”.

The society of Nigerian Broadcasters is expected to be a professional body soon which will look into the affairs of journalism practice of individuals in Nigeria.
