Boniface Fires Leverkusen To German Cup Semis
Super Eagles of Nigeria striker, Victor Boniface, proved to be the hero for Bayer Leverkusen, scoring an extra-time winner in their 3-2 German Cup victory against second-division club Cologne to reach the semi-finals.
Alejandro Grimaldo had hit the crossbar with a free kick on the half-hour mark with Leverkusen, upping the tempo as the German champions looked to go ahead. Still, it was their local Rhine derby rivals who scored through Damion Downs with the last kick before the break.
Cologne then silenced the Leverkusen crowd with a second goal nine minutes after the restart as Linton Maina completed a quick break. 2-0!!
However, Leverkusen hit back through Schick, before the Czech headed in at the far post to send the pulsating encounter into extra time. 2-2!
In extra time, Boniface then slipped into the box and volleyed in a Grimaldo cross in the 98th minute to send the Leverkusen fans into a frenzy as the defending champions had found a way through.

“I am satisfied to have reached the semi-final,” said Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso after the match. “It was a very tough game against a very good opponent.”
“But we showed a good reaction. It was not our best game but we played with a big heart. We fought until the last minute to reach this stage.”
