Borno Governor resettles 1,200 persons in Baga Community

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has visited Doron Baga, a fishing community located in the shores of Lake Chad, Kukawa Local Government Area, and supervised the resettlement of 500 families displaced for more than seven years, by insurgency.

The families are made up of 1, 200 members, consisting of 486 men and 716 women, with each receiving a thousand naira, one bag of rice, one bag of maize grill and other condiments.

The children also received clothing.

Doron Baga is a fishing community and was a major area of economic interest to Boko Haram, during their occupation for more than seven years.

Displaced residents relocated IDP camps in Monguno until Governor Zulum set up a resettlement committee that, headed by the Borno State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Kaka Shehu Lawan, which rebuilt homes and public institutions, as well as began to safely resettle residents.

At the latest resettlement, the Borno State Governor addressed returnees at Doron Baga primary school, warning them that the government will not tolerate any form of sabotage from any individual.

He urged them to report any suspicious person or activity, saying only with their co-operation can security can be guaranteed to continue to safeguard Doron Baga.

“This town was dislodged by the insurgents many years ago. Today, to the glory of God, we are witnessing the first return of the people to their hometown from Monguno town of Monguno Local Government area,” the Governor said.

The Mr. Lawan said that the success of the people’s return was due to Governor Zulum’s resilience and untiring efforts, explaining that with the return, many have resumed their fishing businesses

In the meantime, Governor Zulum applauded the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari and his commitment towards the return of peace to the shores of Lake Chad and the ongoing resettlement.

“Let me use this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the Commander in Chief of the armed forces of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari first creating the enabling environment that ensures the return of this very important community,” said Governor Zulum.

He also appreciated the efforts of the Nigerian military, other security establishments and volunteers in the Civilian JTF, hunters and vigilantes for supporting the military and the reconstruction efforts of the resettlement committee.
