The Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum has supervised the registration and enrolment of about 1,163 children of Internally Displaced Persons into primary school.
The Governor carried out the supervision during a 3-days official visit to Damasak, on the shores of Lake Chad.
The pupils who hailed from Guzamala and Abadam local government areas in northern Borno, now resettled in Damasak had been out of school since the displacement of their parents and guardians, by Boko Haram, following attacks on communities they lived.
The Governor, who used the opportunity to appeal to parents to allow their children enrol in schools, noted that were functional schools provided by the government.
He added that social welfare assistance from the government will eventually be restricted to parents who allow their children and wards to attend schools whether western or combined curriculum of Islamic and western education.
Governor Zulum also addressed secondary school students in Damasak and those who have written their senior schools’ certificate exams, in preparation for a higher institution and promised government’s support in actualizing their dreams.
He also supervised food distribution to 10,000 internally displaced families in need of support with each family receiving 25kg of rice 25kg of beans, 25kg of maize and 5 litres of cooking oil as part of interventions before they can generate livelihoods for themselves in Damasak.
Damasak, which is the headquarters of Mobbar local government area in northern Borno, was one of the strongholds of Boko Haram insurgents before it was liberated.
