Borno State: Fish farmers, traders receive grants, vehicles
The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has directed the release of five vehicles to fish farmers and traders operating in the Lake Chad region to boost the fish value chain in the State and ensure effective distribution of the commodity.
Specifically, he said the empowerment was to encourage fishing and distribution of fish products to markets in the Northeast region, noting that the farmers would also receive fishing grants.
Disbursing the fishing grants at the weekend in Monguno, Zulum said the attacks of the Boko haram terrorists on military posts and communities on the shores of Lake Chad disrupted economic activities in the State, leading to the massive displacement of about 2.7 million people from their homes and communities.
Furthermore, he urged traders to show maximum support to the military and other security agencies by providing information on suspicious terrorists’ activities.

Governor Zulum said before the terrorist attacks, dry fish was commercially supplied to other parts of the country, including the Niger Republic, Chad and Cameroon.
He, however, warned the fish traders against conducting any business deals that could support the funding of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorism.
“There should be no illicit transactions that can jeopardise the security of our people,” he said, adding that those caught associating with criminal elements would have themselves to blame.
Furthermore, he urged traders to show maximum support to the military and other security agencies by providing information on suspicious terrorists’ activities.
