Boxing To Feature In 2022 NUGA Games
Boxing has been accepted by the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) Council as one of the recognised sports in the tertiary institution games to be hosted by the University of Lagos from March 15 to 27, 2022.
According to the resolution by the NUGA Council in a meeting held recently, boxing will feature as a demonstration sport for the 26th edition of the Games.
NUGA President, Professor Stephen Hamafyeito said the reason boxing was introduced as a non-medal winning sport was to discover aspiring talents in boxing from tertiary institutions.
“We are working with the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control for logistics support. Although some students are already boxing, with time, it will be rated as a medal winning sport in NUGA. Karate is making its debut in NUGA as a medal winning sport next year after featuring as demonstration sport. Preliminaries for the Games will hold from January 1 to 31, 2022,” he said.
Aside boxing, female football and walking as a scoring basis event at the Games have been approved, while other sports like archery, shooting, sailing and yachting will be organised for schools that have those facilities within their campus. E-Sports, another rising sport for the future, will be encouraged as part of the Games in the future.
