Brazil’s central bank has announced plans to introduce “Pix Parcelado,” an installment payment feature for its Pix instant payment system, in September 2025.

This new functionality aims to expand Pix’s usage for higher-value retail purchases and provide consumers without access to traditional credit options the ability to pay in installments while ensuring recipients receive the full amount instantly.

Since its launch in 2020, Pix has rapidly become Brazil’s preferred payment method, surpassing credit and debit cards. The system currently handles over 2 trillion reais (approximately $338 billion) in monthly transactions.

The introduction of Pix Parcelado is expected to further accelerate Pix’s adoption and challenge the dominance of credit cards, which have traditionally offered installment payment options popular in Brazilian consumer culture.

In addition to Pix Parcelado, the central bank plans to introduce another feature in 2026 that will allow future Pix receivables to be used as collateral for credit operations. This initiative aims to lower borrowing costs for businesses that heavily rely on Pix transactions.

These advancements highlight Brazil’s dedication to improving its digital payment infrastructure and boosting financial inclusion in the country.
