The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has resigned from office with immediate effect, bringing a sudden shift to the state’s political landscape.
In a formal letter addressed to the state governor, Gwarzo announced that his resignation takes effect from March 27, 2026, in line with Section 306 (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
This followed heightened pressure occasion by an impeachment plot against him by the state Assembly.
However, the former deputy governor said; “his decision followed careful consultations and deep reflection, stressing that it was driven by a commitment to the peace, stability, and overall interest of the people of Kano State.”
Gwarzo noted that “the move was taken to allow the government to function without distractions amid prevailing circumstances, describing it as an act of responsibility and statesmanship.”
Gwarzo clarified that his resignation was voluntary and should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing, but rather a step taken in the interest of institutional integrity, democratic values, and effective governance.
He expressed gratitude to the people of Kano State for the opportunity to serve, and also appreciated the support of the state Governor, the State Executive Council, the Kano State House of Assembly, and his party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), throughout his tenure.
The development is expected to trigger political consultations within the state as stakeholders await the governor’s next move regarding a replacement.
