Britain Enforces Online Safety Laws for Platforms
The British online safety regime officially came into force on Monday, mandating social media giants such as Meta’s Facebook and ByteDance’s TikTok to address criminal activity on their platforms.
The law requires companies to implement measures that enhance safety by design, aiming to create a more secure digital environment for users.
Media regulator Ofcom said it had published its first codes of practice on tackling illegal harms such as child sexual abuse and assisting or encouraging suicide.
Ofcom said sites and apps have until March 16, 2025, to assess the risks illegal content poses to children and adults on their platforms.
