Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai, has called for a radical shift in Nigeria’s security strategy, emphasising the need to engage and empower the youth to combat insecurity.
Delivering the 18th Distinguished Public Lecture at the Federal University, Lokoja, Buratai stressed the importance of a synergistic approach, combining kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to address the threat of violent extremism.
Themed “Youth, Governance, and Countering Violent Extremism: Rethinking Nigeria’s Security Strategy,” Buratai’s lecture highlighted the pivotal role of youth in shaping the nation’s future.
He advocated for a paradigm shift, placing youth at the forefront of decision-making processes, and learning from successful youth-centered approaches in countries like Tunisia, Kenya, Colombia, and Rwanda.
Buratai warned that failing to engage the youth would leave them vulnerable to recruitment by criminal gangs or extremist organisations.
He urged policymakers to empower the youth, asserting that they would become defenders of Nigeria and architects of its future.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiatives, including the National Education Data System, Students’ Loans Scheme, and skill development programs.
The former military chief emphasised the importance of critical education and peace literacy in schools, as well as the role of youth-led digital platforms in countering hate speech and fostering positive narratives.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi echoed Buratai’s sentiments, stating that the theme of the lecture was timely, given Nigeria’s security challenges.
He expressed confidence that Buratai’s insights would inspire meaningful conversations and inform policy.
As Nigeria grapples with insecurity and youth disenfranchisement, Buratai’s call for a transformative approach to governance and youth engagement offers a beacon of hope for a more secure and prosperous future.
