CAF Champions League: Egypt’s Al Ahly Defeats Sudan’s Al-Merreikh
Egypt’s Al Ahly defeated Al Merreikh of Sudan 3-0 in the Group A first round match of their CAF Champions League encounter at the Al Ahly stadium in Egypt.
Al Ahly were on the attack early on as Mohamed Kafsha came close with a header in the sixth minute from the centre of the box that missed narrowly wide, before Mahmoud Kahraba dragged a shot just wide from a similar position 10 minutes later. the score remained 0-0 at halftime.
After the break, Kafsha finally broke the deadlock for Al Ahly after 57 minutes with a header in the centre of the box after a cross by Mohamed Hany.
The Egyptian side continued to create chances and doubled it’s lead six minutes later.
Kahraba scored with a neat finish into the bottom corner after a through ball by Ajayi for the record nine-time African champions, who finished third at the Club World Cup in Qatar last week.
Democratic Republic of Congo-born Walter Bwalya put the outcome beyond doubt with a goal on 71 minutes in a match staged behind closed doors because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Bwalya’s left-footed strike sealed the result for the Egyptians.
The win took Al Ahly to the top of the table, ahead of Simba of Tanzania on goal difference, while V Club of DR Congo sit third and Merreikh last.
Simba will host Al Ahly next, while Merreikh will play V Club at home in the second round of matches on February 23.
