The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) in partnership with FIFPRO, has successfully concluded a two-day safeguarding and player-centric wellness workshop as part of the CAF “Protect the Dream” program.

This initiative was held ahead of the CAF Women’s Champions League Morocco 2024 kick-off, reflecting CAF’s continued commitment to empowering female players with the knowledge and resources essential for a safe and sustainable career in football.

The workshops, held at team hotels in Casablanca and El Jadida, provided a comprehensive, interactive platform for players to learn about safe football practices, health awareness for female athletes, and planning for post-playing careers.

Each team attended individual sessions tailored to their needs, allowing players to engage comfortably in discussions on these crucial topics.

CAF Head of Women’s Football Development, Meskerem Tadesse Goshime, expressed pride in the initiative’s success.

“The safety and well-being of our players is central to CAF’s mission. Through this workshop, we are equipping our players with the skills and knowledge they need, both on and off the field,” Goshime said.

“These workshops are a testament to our commitment to ensuring that our female athletes are supported in all aspects of their careers. Postpartum and return to play were some of the main topics we discussed with players.”

“Our goal is to create an environment where female players feel safe, valued and prepared for life beyond football. By focusing on topics such as motherhood, we aim to foster a supportive football culture that empowers our players from different generations to thrive both in competition and in their personal development.”

CAF’s “Protect the Dream” is a dedicated initiative aimed at safeguarding African football players’ careers, health, and well-being. Launched in 2023 under the banner of the CAF Safeguarding Department, it seeks to address the holistic needs of players at all career stages, from emerging talents to retirees, by providing resources and support to ensure safe, fulfilling careers in football.

FIFPRO’s partnership in the program further underscored the importance of international collaboration in promoting player welfare.

This year’s workshops also mark a significant step in CAF’s broader strategy to promote female footballers’ well-being across Africa. CAF looks forward to building on the momentum of this successful initiative in future tournaments and safeguarding efforts.
