A six-story apartment building collapsed in Cairo’s Waili neighbourhood, killing at least eight people and injuring three, who were hospitalized, according to Egypt’s Health Ministry.
Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber ordered the evacuation of nearby houses as a precaution, while prosecutors launched an investigation into the incident.
The building, constructed in the 1960s, collapsed for reasons not immediately clear.
Building collapses are frequent in Egypt due to poor construction practices and lack of maintenance, particularly in shantytowns and unlicensed neighbourhoods.
Despite recent government efforts to enforce building codes and relocate residents from high-risk areas, unsafe housing remains a significant issue in many Egyptian cities.
