The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has praised President Bola Tinubu for promoting inclusive governance that transcends the nation’s ethno-religious divides.

Speaking after a National Executive Committee meeting in Kaduna, Reverend Yakubu Pam, Chairman of Northern CAN, acknowledged the strides made by the current administration but stressed the need for greater balance in leadership representation.

“For me, the most important thing is a government that is inclusive and as far as they have done Muslim-Muslim ticket, we have also seen reasonable inclusiveness. Left for us, we will say yes, let’s have Christians in certain positions like Vice President and other positions to reflect our diversity,” Pam stated.

Addressing the issue of insecurity, Pam said the desire of Nigerians is to see the government tackle the problem so that people can go about their daily activities without fear.

He noted that the situation has improved compared to previous years but urged the government to do more, particularly in addressing the challenge of hunger and rising commodity prices.

“People are really suffering. Prices of commodities are crazy. That is what we are crying for now. But the President has said that with time, everything will be alright, let’s see how it goes,” he added.

In a call for unity and peace, Rev. Pam urged those present to continue praying for the President and for the nation’s prosperity. He also pointed out the ongoing challenges faced by Christians in Northern Nigeria, including banditry, insurgency, and political marginalization.

“Our region continues to grapple with widespread insecurity, including banditry, insurgency, and terrorism, which have destabilized communities and left many displaced.

“The menace of kidnapping for ransom remains a pressing concern, causing fear and hardship for countless families across the North.

“The ongoing crises between farmers and herders have devastated lives, disrupted agricultural activities, and threatened food security in the region.

“Christians in some states still face challenges in acquiring land for church buildings, as well as marginalization in political appointments and access to opportunities,” he emphasised.

Responding to the concerns raised, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, represented by his Chief of Staff Christopher Tarka, assured the gathering that President Tinubu is committed to promoting good governance, equity, and inclusivity across all regions of Nigeria.

“Let me begin by assuring you that His Excellency, President Tinubu, is fully committed to promoting good governance, equity, and inclusivity across all regions of Nigeria.

“The President’s actions, particularly during the last Christmas season, providing palliatives to Christians across the North, reducing fuel prices, and prioritizing security during the festivities demonstrate his commitment to the welfare of all Nigerians.

“Rest assured that this administration is determined to address the pressing challenges facing the Northern region, including insecurity, kidnapping, farmer-herder conflicts, and economic hardship. The government is working tirelessly to restore peace, stability, and economic growth in affected areas,” he said.

Tarka acknowledged the concerns raised by the Northern CAN, including the difficulties in acquiring land for church buildings and the perceived exclusion of Northern Christians in key political appointments. He promised to bring these issues to the attention of the President for appropriate action.

The SGF representative also recognised the importance of the Northern CAN’s role in promoting interfaith dialogue and fostering understanding in the region.

He urged the religious leaders to continue their efforts, assuring them of the government’s support.

“Let me commend the Northern CAN for your continued prayers, advocacy, and efforts to maintain peace and unity in Northern Nigeria. Your role in promoting interfaith dialogue and fostering understanding in this region is invaluable. I urge you to continue these efforts, knowing that the government is fully behind you,” he stated.
