Carabao Cup: Newcastle United Knocks Manchester City Out
Newcastle United knocked Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup in the third round, winning 1-0 courtesy of a second half strike by Aleksander Isak at St. James’ Park.
The hosts started with Alexander Isak in attack, with Jacob Murphy and Lewis Hall supporting on the wings. For the visitors, Julian Alvarez featured up-front while Jack Grealish and Sergio Gomez were on the flanks.
City dominated possession for much of the first half, but they were unable to make their chances count as Newcastle soaked up the pressure and defended brilliantly.
In the second half, Newcastle came out flying as they were determined to put up a better performance in the thrilling contest.
Swedish striker Isak then opened the scoring for Newcastle in the 53rd minute, slotting in his effort from a low cross from Joelinton to send the fans at St. James’ Park into a frenzy.
City looked for a way back into the encounter as they created a few chances, but were met by the resilient defence of Newcastle on each occasion.
The match finished 1-0 in favour of Newcastle, knocking out Pep Guardiola’s side in a competition they won on four editions consecutively between 2018-2021.
