The event was a blend of nostalgia, camaraderie, and a renewed commitment to media development, with the current NUJ President, Alhassan Yahya, seizing the moment to outline ambitious plans for the industry’s future.
In his speech, Yahya called for greater unity among journalists, highlighting the need to collectively tackle pressing issues such as remuneration and legal protections for media practitioners.
“We are here to celebrate a leader who has left an indelible mark on the union. I urge everyone to join hands in developing new strategies that will elevate our profession, particularly in the area of journalists’ welfare,” Yahya remarked.
A major highlight of the event was the announcement of a proposed media enhancement bill, which Yahya revealed would be drafted in collaboration with key industry players, including the Nigerian Guild of Editors, the International Press Institute (IPI), and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
“We are involving all relevant stakeholders, including international NGOs and media allies,” he stated. “With support from members of the National Assembly who are ready to champion this cause, we are confident of achieving legislative backing for improved media standards.”
Chris Isiguzo, visibly moved by the outpouring of appreciation, reflected on his tenure and commended Yahya for sustaining the union’s reforms.
“It’s heartwarming to witness this while I’m still here,” Isiguzo said. “We made attempts at reforms in the past, but our major setback was thinking we could do it alone. Now, with all key stakeholders on board, I am optimistic that this initiative will succeed.”
He also emphasised the urgent need for legal frameworks to protect journalists in Nigeria, lamenting the current lack of specific laws for media professionals.
Several prominent figures, including NUJ Vice Presidents Adeiza Momohjimoh (North Central), Ronke Samo (South West), and Zare Baba (North East), showered praises on Isiguzo’s leadership, describing him as a visionary who laid a solid foundation for the current administration.
“The President is an exceptional leader who genuinely cares for those around him,” Ronke Samo said. “His integrity and reliability are qualities that have set him apart.”
Dr Bimbo Oyetunde, the first female Deputy National President of NUJ, National Chairperson of NAWOJ Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim, NUJ FCT Chairman Comrade Grace Ike, and a host of other dignitaries attended the colourful event, reaffirming their commitment to fostering a progressive media industry in Nigeria.
With live music performances, heartfelt speeches, and a celebration of journalistic excellence, the event was nothing short of a spectacle—a fitting tribute to a leader who has shaped the landscape of Nigerian journalism.
