Chinese chipmakers are gaining a competitive edge in artificial intelligence (AI) as DeepSeek’s innovative models enhance performance while reducing reliance on high-end hardware.

Unlike traditional AI systems that rely heavily on raw processing power, DeepSeek’s approach optimises computational efficiency during inference, the stage where AI generates outputs. This allows Chinese firms to improve performance without requiring high-end hardware.

Major companies such as Huawei, Hygon, EnFlame, Tsingmicro, and Moore Threads have embraced DeepSeek’s models, which complement the strengths of Chinese AI chips. These chips perform exceptionally well in inference tasks compared to U.S. counterparts like Nvidia’s GPUs, which are primarily designed for AI training. This compatibility helps reduce the performance gap between domestic and international processors.

DeepSeek’s open-source and cost-effective nature is expected to accelerate AI adoption and application development in China. This is particularly crucial as Chinese firms seek to overcome U.S. export restrictions on advanced AI chips, fostering greater technological self-sufficiency.

However, challenges persist. Nvidia continues to dominate the global AI market, largely due to its advanced capabilities and the widespread adoption of its CUDA platform. Chinese firms must persuade developers to transition from CUDA to alternatives like Huawei’s CANN.

Despite these obstacles, integrating DeepSeek’s models represents a significant step toward strengthening China’s AI industry.
