Key Facts About Borno State

Borno State is located in Northeast Nigeria. Although nicknamed the “Home of Peace”, it has been scourged by the Boko Haram insurgency and terrorism, like every other state in the region.

This has led to the loss of lives and properties; displacement of many people from their homes and consequent proliferation of internally displaced persons’ (IDPs) camps; destruction of critical infrastructure; and destabilization of the economic, health, and education systems.
Borno State was once known for the biggest fish market in Nigeria, the Baga Fish Market, also known for dried fish from natural water.
The state is a major source of fresh water fish in the country as it houses part of the Lake Chad and other internal water bodies. However, irrigation farming and fishing have been disrupted.
To surmount these challenges, the Borno State Government has collaborated with the Nigerian Military and its state security apparatus to restore relative peace and normalcy to the state.
