The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN, Niger state North Central Nigeria chapter, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, expressed that Nigerians often demonstrate love only when expecting something in return.

During his Christmas message titled “Genuine Love (John Chapter 1),” delivered at the Christmas Mass held at the Catholic Cathedral Church of St. Michael in Kontagora, the Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, emphasised the absence of genuine love among the people.

He stressed that only genuine love accompanied by real sacrifice can positively impact society, stating, “In the church today, in society, and government, there is a lack of genuine love. Love is the foundation for celebrating Christmas.”

“As Christians, we are expected to demonstrate and share love with everyone, especially the less privileged, the sick, those in need, and the elderly. Unfortunately, the love we often display expects something in return, not symbiotic.”

Bishop Yohanna urged leaders to consult with the people before initiating any projects, asserting, “If a leader genuinely loves his people, he should discuss their real needs and how it will benefit them. Presidents or Governors must prioritize whether a program will positively impact the people. My concern is that politicians remember the common man only during elections, and afterward, they are on their own.”

He added that Jesus was more popular among the people because he consistently helped the poor. With genuine love, the problems we face today could be mitigated.
