As the World Celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Center for Information Technology and Development CITAD in Kano State has advocated for the inclusion of disabled persons in government affairs.

At a celebration to mark the day in Kano, the Senior Program Manager CITAD Isa Garba called for the protection of the rights of people living with Disabilities.

He told them that CITAD has placed special recognition on the needs of People living with Disabilities hence the need to celebrate with them.

Garba noted that CITAD has a dedicated computer training program for the disabled to enable them to learn and contribute to society.

He encouraged them not to consider their condition as a liability but as a possibility of making an impact on society.

He called on the government to bring PWDs into decision-making for they to have a sense of belonging.

“Bringing the PWDs into decision making, leadership and economic empowerment, is very essential to the growth of the country, essential to their social well-being and is also essential in making an inclusive society.”

Professor Ya’u Dantata of the Department of Special Education at Bayero University Kano, encouraged PWDs not to engage in street begging urging them to use their talents and learn skills for the development of the Society.

He called on the Nigerian government and the Kano state government to provide easy access to health for PWDs and allow them to take part in decision-making.

Professor Dantata also called on the government to develop a suitable public transport system for PWDs among others.

Some PWDs who spoke to Voice of Nigeria expressed concern about the level of discrimination they face in society and called on the people to desist from the stigma.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is a UN day that is celebrated every year on 3 December.

The day is about promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities at every level of society and development and raising awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of political, social, economic, and cultural life.

The theme for the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities is “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.”
