The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria, (NCSCN) has called for caution on the divestment Deal of Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (SPDC) with the Renaissance Consortium.

The Executive Director of the National Civil Society Council of Nigeria, Mr. Blessing Akinlosotu made this known during a Press briefing with journalists in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Mr. Akinsolotu called on the Nigerian Government through the Regulatory Authorities to halt the approval of the deal pending when the Civil Society Council concludes its investigations.

Akinsolotu emphasised SPDC’s responsibility to restore the environmental status of its operational areas.

“As a responsible organization, we are concerned about the potential impact of the deal by SHELL. We believe it is important to consider the potential environmental consequences and the impact on the community, particularly in the Niger Delta region,” he further said.

While speaking, the Secretary of the Council, Mr Raymond Edoh emphasized the importance of prioritizing the interests of Nigerian citizens by suspending the approval of the SHELL Global divestment deal.

He elaborated on the severe environmental impact the deal could have on the Niger Delta and the need for responsible decision-making that benefits the country’s citizens and environment in the long term.

“We urge all parties involved to carefully consider the implications of this deal and act in a manner that prioritizes the wellbeing of the environment and Nigerians,” he said.
