The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers NSE, Babagana Mohammed has noted that clean energy is a veritable tool for national economic growth.
Mohammed stated this along with other participants at the just-concluded conference of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, with the theme “Expansion of the Energy Mix For National Economic Growth.”
The NSE President said the quest for clean energy has taken the centre stage in the affairs of nations all over the world.
“While Nigeria is still largely relying on hydro-carbon fuels as sources of energy, with the hazardous effects that they bring, the developed nations have moved on to the future, with clean, renewable energy,” Engr. Mohammed said.
He added that the Nigerian Society of Engineers, at different advocacy forums over the years, has consistently clamored for more cohesive coordination and transparency in the transformation of the Energy sector, noting that steps are being taken at different levels to galvanize efforts towards the achievement of that goal in Nigeria.
In pursuant of NSE objective of collaborating with government to galvanize accelerated development for the Nigerian citizenry the Society produced a Memorandum on the proposed amendment to the 1999 Constitution, presenting it in twelve venues across the six geopolitical zones of the country.
President of NSE also said that the Society had set up a powerful lobby group, led by the Chairman of the Engineering Legislation Committee, Engr. Sir Chris Okoye, to work towards achieving passage of all pending Engineering bills in the National Assembly.
He told participants at the conference that the Road Sector Reform Bills (The National Road Fund and the Federal Road Bill) have been passed and transmitted to the President and Commander-in-Chief for his assent.
Paper Presentations at the conference dwelled on subjects that reflect global trends and yet adaptable to the local experiences in Nigeria, enhancing the professional competence of Nigerian Engineers and also contributing to the growth and development of technology in Nigeria.
Meanwhile NSE has also prepared a Memorandum and is awaiting a date for the Public Hearing on the Bill for the amendment of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute Act, for presentation to the Senate.
