The College of Medicine (CMUL), University of Lagos (UNILAG), has rehabilitated its main auditorium and vows to make it a world-class research-intensive medical college. Prof. David Oke, Provost of the college, spoke in Lagos on Thursday during the inauguration of the renovated main auditorium, at Tafawa Balewa Plaza.

Oke said that funding the educational sector had dwindled in real terms over the last five decades and this was evident in many aspects of CMUL including infrastructure, and scholarship among others. He said that the college had, therefore, embarked on a number of projects and programmes to reverse the trend.

“One of which is to reach philanthropic individuals, corporate organisations, alumni, parents and friends of the college to support the transformation campaign”.

He also reiterated that the management was working assiduously to achieve its vision to be a world-class research-intensive medical college, a centre of global distinction in medical training, research, clinical services as well as character and service to humanity.

Speaking, Prof. Mobolaji Oludara, Chairman,  Medilag Alumni 77/82 set, said that the remarkable global geographical distribution of their set members was an eloquent testimony of the greatness of the story and the project that CMUL had carved out over the last six decades of its existence.

“Indeed, we, the 77/82 set, are proud and happy products of CMUL. We have been involved in various levels of medical service provision, training and research both within and outside Nigeria. We can say that today, medical knowledge, technology and demands for quality training have increased exponentially whilst unfortunately university education support and funding have not been able to meet up with the challenges that these changes have occasioned. It has, therefore, become imperative for different support groups of stakeholders to find a way of filling or plugging the gaps created and assist government initiatives,” he said.
