The Anambra State Disability Rights Commission (ASDRC) has announced its commitment to initiating legal actions to defend the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the state. The Chairperson, Mr Chuks Ezewuzie, revealed this during a Press briefing in Awka while outlining plans for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed annually on December 3rd.

In a bold move, the Commission has already initiated legal proceedings for several cases of alleged rights violations against PWDs, including:

– Victor Onwudiegwu: A civil servant from Nanka, who was denied a driver’s license by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) due to his hearing impairment. The Commission is contesting the discriminatory practice that labels deaf individuals as ineligible for driving licenses.

– Nwokedi Philip: A person living with albinism, who was brutally attacked in an attempted ritual killing, motivated by harmful superstitions surrounding albinism.

– Ifeoma Ejidike: A physically challenged woman who suffered disfigurement at the hands of her brother-in-law.

– Additional cases of assault and rape are also under consideration by the Commission.

Ezewuzie emphasised that with the support of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) programme, which has trained lawyers to provide pro bono representation, PWDs can now seek justice in court confidently. “Our partnership with the State Ministry of Justice will ensure there are no excuses for not seeking redress under sections 20 and 23 of the Anambra State Disability Rights Law,” he stated.

In addition to the legal initiatives, the ASDRC has outlined an agenda for the upcoming International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Events will include tours of special education centers, public awareness campaigns, seminars, and collaboration with the United Nations under the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”

Shedrack Nwekeagu, a representative from RoLAC, commended the Commission’s efforts and urged the continued fight for the rights of PWDs, aiming to ensure access to justice for all vulnerable individuals in Anambra State.

Ezewuzie added that this comprehensive approach reflects the Commission’s dedication to empowering individuals with disabilities and ensuring their rights are protected and upheld across the state.
