Mrs Olivia Dazyam, Chairperson of the commission, made the call in a news conference on Thursday in Jos
Dazyam, who said that there was the urgent need for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to tackle the challenge.

She added that the commission would partner with the media, lawmakers, security agencies, traditional rulers, among others, to address all forms of harmful traditional practices.

“We are deeply saddened and troubled by the rampant cases of violations, abuse and discriminatory practices which, if left unchecked, will bring negative social issues in the state. This is why we are calling on stakeholders to support this commission to address the issues that have become stumbling blocks toward the safety of women and children in the state,” she said.

The chairperson said that with the existing legal frameworks like the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law, Child Rights law and other extant laws, the state would achieve sustainable gender equity, mainstreaming and social protection.
She added that the commission was planning an in-house training for its personnel, adding that the move would equip them to discharge their duties effectively.

“We want to assure the public that the commission will vigorously pursue gender issues and cases until discriminatory practices, abuses, violations are reduced to the barest minimum, if not completely eliminated,” she said.

Dazyam, however, called on parents and guadians to ensure the safety of their children, particularly the girl-child, from all forms of abuse.

She promised to sensitise Plateau residents to understand the functions of the newly established commission.
